    It took me a long time to get the equipment that I have today. The most important thing is to use fully the equipment you have at hand. Luckily its the photographer who is taking the picture and the equipment is just helping a long the way. :)

      Well said. Photography is like 10% camera and 90% the person taking the shot.

    I too have been using the crazy sharp Nikon AF-S 300mm F2.8, with the Nikon nano coated teleconverter 1.7x and 2x. All the Nikon Nano coated teleconverters are super sharp and a worth while investment for any of your telophoto lenses. I use with the Wimberley gimble tripod head with an older carbon Gitzo tripod. The tripod keeps my images tack sharp. I put archery real tree, tree stand arm pads on the tripod legs, to give a foot and a half camouflage. I am on the lookout for a Nikon 400mm f 2.8, the 300mm doesn't have enough reach. That is when I am rich and famous. I am looking at getting a floating hide, and more real 3D leaf camo clothing. Thank-you for your good content.

    Thanks Trond. I also shoot a Canon 300 f/2.8 version I. It was a great way to get into the longer, faster glass without breaking the bank. And it does make you think creatively about hides, approaching the subject and positioning yourself. My Canon 300 also takes the 1.4 very well, under certain circumstances the 2X as well. As with many folks however, I'm saving up for a 500 f/4. In the meantime, my 100-400 II gives me more reach especially on an APS-C body in better light. Cheers.

      Thats an awesome lense. Yeah the 500 f/4 is great. But as you said...its so important to make the most of what you have. The photographer is making the picture. Luckily :)

    The 300mm 2.8 AFS is a real nice lens! Its sharp, compact compared to other large glass and you can hand hold it!

    Well, for my Wildlife stuff 300mm not long enough. Many of the birds I am shooting have simply a long safer distance. Just mention here some sort of Owls, e.g. the Snowy Owls. So I use a Canon 400mm 2.8 II together with a Canon 7D Mark II. Teleconverter I don’t like so much. Recommended is also the Sigma 150-600mm Sport.

    My Canon 500mm f4 is my favorite one. I can use it in my hands by hole day. Next I dream of is 300mm, but one as it is in Nikon familly Nikkor AF-S 200-400 mm f4 may give much more flexibility witch is needed quite often.

    Another great video, Trond. I would be definitely interested in watching a video that walks through the process of lens calibration. I have watched many good videos and am still intimidated by the process. I also am worried that I might make my images worse by trying to achieve something that may not be necessary. I currently have a Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6 with VR that I combine with either a Nikon D500 or D810. I have taken some photos where I can still appreciate that the image is not crystal clear 100% sharp and have attributed that to my movement as I am hand holding. As I am knew at this, I appreciate your perspective and certainly the comment about suboptimal light was important to consider. I am saving for a larger prime for the future and have been thinking about the Nikkor 400mm FL ED VR f/2.8. The 500mm, 600mm and 800mm seem so impractical for me at this stage of my photographic learning curve.

    I have the same 300mm non vr lens but very difficult to use for wildlife from a safari vehicle without a monopod or tripod. How should I cater for camera shake when shooting from a safari vehicle in africa and should I use wide open on a safari?

  • @grantking4681
    @grantking4681 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Trond, do you shoot wide open most / all the time? I have a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 and it seems silly to close it down when you have something as good as this on your camera. If I wanted smaller apertures, I'd buy an f/4.

    Greetings from a very stormy UK. I have just re watched all your You tube vides. Amazing especially the Goshawks, one of my favourite birds. you have been using both the 300 and 500 recently and i was wondering if your could advise me if you could only have one, which would you have I am a Canon user and hope to be in a position soon to buy a prime lens soon. I could go for an older 500 or a more recent 300 mk2 which would probably work better with a 1.5 or 2 convertor. I am currently using a crop sensor camera but will also be adding a full frame when i get the lens. My photo interest are very much like yours and the UK weather is quite similar so any expert advise from you would really help me make my mind up. Keep those videos coming. thanks

    My dream lens is the Nikon 500mm f5.6 but those primes are soo expensive, so i probably go for a 200-500 f5.6 which is 3 times cheaper

    Thanks! Always interesting to hear what equipment is being used and how. You said you often use it in hides which kind of mimics my thought about 300mm field of view (Using Olympus so my 40-150 has the same FOV at the long end). I am having serious trouble getting close enough with it though so 1: Thinking about a mobile hide and 2: Just ordered the Olympus 300mm F4.
    Interesting video, as always :-)

    • @JoeMaranophotography
      @JoeMaranophotography 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@trondwestby I would never say never but unlikely in the close future. Yes VERY happy with it! It has only been used out and about for really quick tests but its performing amazingly at the moment and its only getting better as I learn to use it more. The stand out feature is the stabilisation as I can comfortably handhold and get sharp shots down to even 1/25th which is epic. The only downside is 400mm is at f6.3 and in the low winter light it means the shutter speeds have to be low or iso needs to be high but then again you can't have it all in one lens. Ideally I would like to pair it with an f2.8 of some description but maybe a body upgrade to the G9 before then. We shall see!
      Anyways top work in the channel and hope to see more soon (I get the struggle 😁)

    Great video, just one think to improve this in my opinion, if You can Put for us on the screen some shots taken with the lens ;) about the lens,: sounds cool, but for me 300 is a little bit to short. I'm shooting with 400/2.8 ii canon glass and it fits my needs perfectly, I know it is the price of both 300 and 500 but the lens is Great. I also love that I can attach 1,4 tc with No image quality lost, so in fact I have 2 lenses: 400/2.8 and 560/4 that works best for me. Highly recommend to check it out ;) can't wait for Another field video

    That’s an expensive piece of equipment. What do you suggest as entry level zoom? I’ve a 70-300 5.6/6.3, but with 300mm it’s pretty far.
