I love when you do a workflow video like this. It's so much better then the run-of-the-mill reviews you find when you search on youtube. It works for people who own it and are new to the device a brief tutorial AND it gives people who don't own it yet a preview of what their workflow might look like on something different. Excellent video, thank you for taking the time to make this! New owner of an M32 and this taught me a few things in an easy to remember way!
As beatz04 mentioned, the M32 integration with Ableton is quite limited with the current version of the firmware/script: the Plug-In mode only works with Native Instrument's own Komplete and Mashine plug-ins, and won't automatically map to the selected Ableton racks "macro" knobs. Nor can you navigate the Ableton Browser with the M32 (you can just navigate the Komplete or Maschine browser of the plug-in). Unless you use Native Instrument plugins, at this point the M32 will just allow you to select tracks and clips, start/stop/record, move the playhead, quantise, change tempo, toggle loop, control the mixer (volume/pan). Maybe a future script will enable a more complete integration, but I couldn't find any indication this is coming.
Thing is, NI is a very good instrument to play with, it's the controller made for the VST and vice versa. It's just not that good (now) with DAWs, say Ableton and others: it has its own shell and does not play well with the environment. It's getting better tho, now you have automap sound parameters AND when you change to track mode you can control volume and pan. Not as good as an AKAI that can control Ableton devices, sends and all while managing tracks. Question is: do you play Ableton instruments or would you rather use NI? O the other hand: it does few things but it does them well, it has infinite knobs, it does not have BAD PAD, it has GOOD keys (for the price), it does not have slides that are often not needed. If you have good pads coz you care, you have a launchpad for managing tracks, what are you gonna play with? This does the play part well.
In preferences, I chose komplete Kontrol A, like you said but on the out put, it gives me these options: komplete kontrol m32 midi, that’s it, on the out put, it gives me the options of : microsoft gs wavetable synth, komplete kontrol m32 midi , the options you gave are not present, it works glitched and delayed. I am using ableton 11 with the M32 keyboard, I would appreciate your help!
I can't integrate the NI plugins to ableton. I have followed alk steps in this vid. When ableton is running I can't use the plug-in knob so I can't browse the NI plugins. Can anyone help me with it? Thanx for answering!

I want to use komplete kontrol, the app that lets you browse with your midi controller by NI, I have a komplete m32 and komplete software, the 599 one, when I open ableton and select my midi controller, I only get the "komplete kontrol m32 midi", not the "daw" thingy, also once I check that in ableton's midi section I run into the problem that keeps me from hearing anything: when I open the komplete kontrol app, komplete kontrol M32 apears in the midi section, but I cannot check it as midi input, I can only check my usb audio interface. When I quit Ableton, I can check it. it's weird and no documentation on native instruments website helps with this
Here is a short guide to get it to work. Make sure you have Ableton's latest update (10.0.5 or newer) Komplete control version 2.1.1 or later. Do follow the "NI setup guide" in the Description. Follow the copying files instruction for your OS (Mac users might need Mojave. Some other users said this resolved errors later on). once done copying files. Start your Komplete Kontrol and go to "Edit > Preferences > MIDI > Output" And check the Komplete Kontrol M DAW option. If you don't, it will NOT show up in Abelton. (Input might require the same, did not try.) Then in Abelton, you need to add the track as a Komplete Kontrol and add the instrument within that, that's why it has no "Deep Integration". Don't ask me why I cant make music for shit. Best of luck. Hope I helped someone in need. I'll probably make a video tomorrow after my rage meter has reset.......
I cannot get the Komplete Kontrol M DAW option why doesn't it appear in komplete kontrol? I have Ableton10.1 and even komplete control version 2.14 I've competed all the damn files and nothing help T_T
Just set mine up in the same way. I use with an ableton push, its quite nice to be able to control the the volume levels on each of the playing clips plus the big navigation nob allows you to jump around the different clips. pretty cool. works for me
Hey, I just need some advice, because I'm planning to get my first midi keyboard and have this in my mind. The only ONE thing, that one little thing, that's bugging me, is that it doesn't have drum pads; everything else is perfect, just that one thing. I just wanted to ask whether I really need drum pads, or can i just use the keys as drums, because you make it look so easy, but I don't know as a beginner, I need drum pads or not. Especially because I'm concerned about things like key travel, and actually how responsive the keys are with drum tracks, relative to drum pads.

Berk B yeah man I figured it out a while ago. If I remember correctly you just gotta update all the programs you installed and follow the instructions on Native Instrument’s website. Also there’s a video by a guy named Sanjay that you should check out to connect the controller to ableton. I don’t remember what I did exactly but if you keep trying you’ll get it

So I have just gotten into Live and I tried to hooking-up my Korg Microstudio to control live but its Janky asf... This means I am in the market for a new travel controller which ideally works with an Ipad (preferably bus powered).. Built in arp and chord modes are a must these days as they can kick off a track.... so far i am torn between the Novation keylab mini mk3, the NI M32, Akia MPK and the Behrringer Keystep clone.... There's a lot of choice out there!
wait the NI website he linked to doesn't mention anything about copying/pasting files? I managed to get it all working on ableton 10 on my old PC by editing a user remote scropt but it isn't working in ableton live 11?
Thanks for the video, but I really can't get how you managed it to work properly. As I launch Ableton "Plug-In" and "Browse" button stay darkened, so it's no way to change it. The second thing is that the sound from Komplete app wouldn't record in Ableton whatever input/output settings I choose (it identifies the keys I'm pressing, but in effect nothing really recording)

Hey Taetro? I finally got my M32 to work fully with Ableton but now I noticed in Ableton that the whole plugin section is disabled. So now I can't use any NI sounds. I was wondering if you had that issue and had to adjust something to get the VST options to work in Ableton?
@@daniel6648 i did but I was just changing everything and turning on and off everything til I got it to work. And just never made changes again so it stood in place. It was so long ago but I do have it to where its supposed to be.

trying to workout whether to get this or arturia keystep. the keystep has got a built in step sequencer and arp which is sweet especially if youre using external hardware but this has encoders so i dunno :s
I have both, and while I’m new to making music completely, I used to SERIOUSLY hate the M32 , because I had the exact same problem as @Taetro, but after seeing this “tutorial”, it makes a lot more sense to me! But I say if you have the funds get both, you never know what kind of magic you can create!
M32 is clockwork. I bought one after grabbing Komplete Start. I tried to use my Microfreak on midi but the Kontrol is wack with it. To have all that shish in perfect with the 32 is like having pieces of hardware.
Very helpful video. Thanks. I am also using KK32 to control external instruments (like a Behringer Model D for example). But for some reason I can't figure out how to employ the ARP feature to control external instruments in Ableton Live 10. I assume there is a way. Any suggestions? The KK seems to be stuck in Track mode. It will drive individual notes on the model D but I can't get ARP to engage to play arpeggios on the Model D.

2.09: Note: Unless your controller has a built in sound generator, you won't ever need to activate Track on the output port of a MIDI controller. Only activate the switches that you require otherwise you can create MIDI feedback loops. [ ABLETON ]
@Taetro, have the same question. Also, in the Ableton Live 10 only Track mode is available with the play/rec/stop/loop/metro/tempo/undo buttons section.
I've been re-mastering some song in Ableton Live that used some Komplete Kontrol instruments for various tracks. I was surprised to see that Ableton doesn't save the specific patch of an instrument from one edit session to the next. For example, If I first selected the "2am" patch from Massive for a song, then I close Ableton Live and reopen the project that used that patch, it only knows that I used Massive for that track, but not the specific "2am" patch. Is there something that I'm not saving when I close a project? If this is the way it normally works, then I guess a workaround is for me to name the track with the instrument AND THE PATCH NAME.
Question... I have a NI M32 and have been able to do the link to Ableton Live 10 Standard DAW (BTW thanks for your insight) but I would also like to simultaneously sync in my NI Maschine Mikro MK3 in Ableton... preferably without blowing things up. I have an IMac 27” with an additional 40Gb RAM ... it should be doable but if you have any tips - it’d be helpful. Looks like the M32 wobbles on your desk every time you put significant pressure one the sides. Is it not balanced properly or was it just not laying flat on your desk?
I've been having issues with connecting my M32 to Ableton. I selected Komplete Kontrol A in control surface but for input and output my only option is M32 or none. I don't get the M32 DAW option. So I guess I have to use the M32. But nothing is heard when I press the keys. The keyboard screen just says midi template. Also I have serious latency issues. I was wondering if you had that and how did you fix that? I won't even get to the velocity pressing issue. Just wondered if these were some of the issues that you fixed with the remedies you discuss? 👍
@@Rene-lm8kr I saw this but the issue which I see a lot of people have googled is the DAW option that San Jay chooses is not available there. That's the hang up I see alot of people have. 😟
@@ayushupreti6164 I did. I had to toggle thru the prefernce section and just start making changes to each option till I got it working. It's been a year but to kind of recap what I did from memory was when you open up the Komplete Kontrol and go to preferences and make sure you output is set to where you can hear it I found that I had to *CLOSE* Komplete Kontrol on my pc and then open it in Ableton. It didn't work while I had it open but then when I closed Komplete on my desktop I had to close Ableton and then open it back up. If that doesn't work then I could probably tell you what's wrong but you'd have to type step by step what you're doing. I think it may be how you open the plugins, the track setting or the preferences. Can almost guarantee it. Lemme know

Hi. Can't find the Kontrol M DAW in my Link MIDI input and output. The options it gives me are either my RME audio interface or IAC Driver. Can anyone help me? How do I get the M DAW option to appear?
For anyone having the issue where M Daw or A Daw isn't showing up in the input or output, I have found a fix. support.native-instruments.com/hc/de/articles/360005150138 Follow that link. Scroll to the bottom, and download the Host Integration file. Extract the file. Then copy the files '_NativeInstruments,' Komplete_Kontrol_Mk1,' and 'Komplete_Kontrol_Mk2.' Paste these files into 'C: > ProgramData > Ableton > Live 9 (or 10) > Resources > MIDI Remote Scripts.' After this, restart your computer, go into Ableton and select your keyboard. If it still isn't working, make sure that you have the most recent drivers for your device, the most recent version of Komplete Kontrol, and at least Ableton LIVE 10.0.5. Hope this helps!

Hey Taetro? I finally got my M32 to work fully with Ableton but now I noticed in Ableton that the whole plugin section is disabled. So now I can't use any NI sounds. I was wondering if you had that issue and had to adjust something to get the VST options to work in Ableton?

@@daniel6648 i did but I was just changing everything and turning on and off everything til I got it to work. And just never made changes again so it stood in place. It was so long ago but I do have it to where its supposed to be.

plug in mode doesnt do anything on my m32 for controling plugins. the knobs only control the volume

trying to workout whether to get this or arturia keystep. the keystep has got a built in step sequencer and arp which is sweet especially if youre using external hardware but this has encoders so i dunno :s
I have this and the keystep. Keystep is more useful external than internal, Internal that arp and sequencer are not perfectly timed somehow.

M32 had a pitchbend mod wheel and transport control
And tons of software no brainier imo
if you're working with some form of hip hop, get the akai mini, since it has drum pads.
I’ve had the akai mini for four years, the keys are too small and the drum pads are trash. Get the M32.
I have both, and while I’m new to making music completely, I used to SERIOUSLY hate the M32 , because I had the exact same problem as @Taetro, but after seeing this “tutorial”, it makes a lot more sense to me! But I say if you have the funds get both, you never know what kind of magic you can create!
M32 is clockwork. I bought one after grabbing Komplete Start. I tried to use my Microfreak on midi but the Kontrol is wack with it. To have all that shish in perfect with the 32 is like having pieces of hardware.
Scale and Arp doesn't light up. I can't use the function. Any ideas?
Very helpful video. Thanks. I am also using KK32 to control external instruments (like a Behringer Model D for example). But for some reason I can't figure out how to employ the ARP feature to control external instruments in Ableton Live 10. I assume there is a way. Any suggestions? The KK seems to be stuck in Track mode. It will drive individual notes on the model D but I can't get ARP to engage to play arpeggios on the Model D.

Ableton isn’t allowing me to select an input. There’s no way I can play. Is there a fix to this?
I've been re-mastering some song in Ableton Live that used some Komplete Kontrol instruments for various tracks. I was surprised to see that Ableton doesn't save the specific patch of an instrument from one edit session to the next. For example, If I first selected the "2am" patch from Massive for a song, then I close Ableton Live and reopen the project that used that patch, it only knows that I used Massive for that track, but not the specific "2am" patch. Is there something that I'm not saving when I close a project? If this is the way it normally works, then I guess a workaround is for me to name the track with the instrument AND THE PATCH NAME.

Question... I have a NI M32 and have been able to do the link to Ableton Live 10 Standard DAW (BTW thanks for your insight) but I would also like to simultaneously sync in my NI Maschine Mikro MK3 in Ableton... preferably without blowing things up. I have an IMac 27” with an additional 40Gb RAM ... it should be doable but if you have any tips - it’d be helpful.

Looks like the M32 wobbles on your desk every time you put significant pressure one the sides. Is it not balanced properly or was it just not laying flat on your desk?
I have it propped up for a better view from the front cam - it's as sturdy as all the other controllers
I've been having issues with connecting my M32 to Ableton. I selected Komplete Kontrol A in control surface but for input and output my only option is M32 or none. I don't get the M32 DAW option. So I guess I have to use the M32. But nothing is heard when I press the keys. The keyboard screen just says midi template. Also I have serious latency issues. I was wondering if you had that and how did you fix that? I won't even get to the velocity pressing issue. Just wondered if these were some of the issues that you fixed with the remedies you discuss? 👍

@@ayushupreti6164 I did. I had to toggle thru the prefernce section and just start making changes to each option till I got it working. It's been a year but to kind of recap what I did from memory was when you open up the Komplete Kontrol and go to preferences and make sure you output is set to where you can hear it I found that I had to *CLOSE* Komplete Kontrol on my pc and then open it in Ableton. It didn't work while I had it open but then when I closed Komplete on my desktop I had to close Ableton and then open it back up. If that doesn't work then I could probably tell you what's wrong but you'd have to type step by step what you're doing. I think it may be how you open the plugins, the track setting or the preferences. Can almost guarantee it. Lemme know

Can't find the Kontrol M DAW in my Link MIDI input and output. The options it gives me are either my RME audio interface or IAC Driver.
Can anyone help me? How do I get the M DAW option to appear?
For anyone having the issue where M Daw or A Daw isn't showing up in the input or output, I have found a fix.

Follow that link. Scroll to the bottom, and download the Host Integration file. Extract the file.
Then copy the files '_NativeInstruments,' Komplete_Kontrol_Mk1,' and 'Komplete_Kontrol_Mk2.' Paste these files into 'C: > ProgramData > Ableton > Live 9 (or 10) > Resources > MIDI Remote Scripts.' After this, restart your computer, go into Ableton and select your keyboard.
If it still isn't working, make sure that you have the most recent drivers for your device, the most recent version of Komplete Kontrol, and at least Ableton LIVE 10.0.5.
