We need to create a bigger pool of players. The grooming of professional players at Olympic levels of competition is just appalling. Very few of the athletes who are mostly self driven ,get ready for the Olympics. Eg. Neeraj Chopra .There are 329 events in the Olympics. US has the largest delegation of 594 athletes , followed by France’s 573. China has 388 qualified athletes which is behind 6 countries & most of them are in the top bracket of the competition. The sheer quality of the representing athletes from the top nations is way above than the Indian contingent. It’s not that the talent & skills are not there, it’s all about inculcating & grooming professional athletes. If the pool of strong contenders are present, the athletes themselves have a stiff competition & practice to outdo one another. Presently the situation is such that one odd athlete from a particular discipline has to do outstandingly well & secure a medal somehow at the games. This needs to change…
