    Goodbye Quick Tip Tuesdays! Still looking forward to more tips & tutorials - some of them really were exactly what we needed as we started shooting our episodes so thanks for that! And if anyone will be wondering, we're shooting with a Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 lens on our main camera and the b-roll shots are made with a Canon 50mm f/1.8.

    Street and Architecture photographer here. I love your route, and I found good reasons for them.
    For where I live in, a lot of places I walk around with are tight spaces that even 35mm is too close that I back up a whole lot. Since I use a Canon crop sensor camera, I would use a 24mm f/2.8 for it's ergonomics (doesn't look scary to random subjects) and focal length that works the best for me. I invest on 10-22mm onward for both Architecture and some creativity with that ultrawide perspective. I had one time bought a 70-200mm f/4 for some specific occasions like sport events but I barely use it due to its size and less opportunities to grab shots with, but is pretty handy to have. I am planning to get an ef-s 15-85mm for its amazing price to performance ratio, for when I got to other events in my area. It surprises me that I have never thought of using 24-70mm full frame equivalent zooms, considering how evidently useful one is.

    Great episodes on lens choice, with this episode and the episode about why 24-70 is the go-to lens, a question though. What lens or camera do you bring on a family vacation? You don't always want to be carrying a large lens around and almost certainly don't want to carry multiple lenses, would you still choose the 24-70mm lens?

  • @alfa170d
    @alfa170d 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Event photographer here, I use for about 90% of my shots 24-70mm 2.8, on second body I currently have 70-200mm 2.8, I also used to own 35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8 I found I would use the 85mm on rare occasions when I had portrait shoots which I do when I have too, I do it mainly for repeating clients because mainly my passion is weddings and events. I almost never used the 35mm, it mainly was used if I was in extreme low light situations and needed the extra light coming in. Lens I never used was the 50mm, I found it to be not wide enough for most of what I did and not close enough for portrait, also compression isn't as good as the 85mm is for portraits. So now I am moving from Nikon to Sony so I sold off all my primes and I kept the bare minimum which is the 24-70mm and 70-200mm, I bought the Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 and just ordered the Tamron 70-180mm 2.8. I ordered the Tamron and not the Sony 70-200mm 2.8 mainly because its just so huge and heavy, the Tamron is far smaller and lighter which is just a blessing in a 12hrs+ event day and being cheaper was a nice bonus but not the main reason I got it. Will add 3 more lenses in time, 24mm 1.8 for back up just in case something happened to my Sigma, 85mm 1.8 for portraits and a macro lens. I never buy an f1.4 lens because they are so big and heavy, I will never shoot them at f1.4 anyways. For event practicality is key!!! Also will not buy a wider lens then 24mm, had 12-24mm lens at the past, used this lens maybe 3 times the entire times I had it, dont find the need to shoot this wide and if I do I can always rent one.

      @DavidManningvlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think you're absolutely on the right track Eshel! For event photography, the 24-70 and 70-200 are absolutely the way to go in my mind!

  • @gdrriley420
    @gdrriley420 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I prefer a 24-105 F4 over the 24-70 f2.8
    I've ran one for about a year on a crop body and I like the range especially as a walking around lens a lot more
    I don't need the extra stop of light and if I'm after it or separating subjects it is time to grab a 1.4 or 1.8 prime

    great video and love your content. i mostly shoot my 2 young boys running around inside the house. I feel like a zoom, i'm a canon guy, so my choices are 28-70/2, 24-105/4 or 24-105/2.8. I love shallow dof and bokeh everything so i have a 85mm 1.2 but when i shoot my boys staggered about 1/2 body, i'm usually at f 5.6 or higher. I had some pro family shots and she used 70-200 and shot at f 5.6 and higher. first world problems, i'm trying to decide which normal zoom to go with, any suggestions or comments would be apperciated. i'm leaning towards the 28-70/2.0 but eyeing the 24-105/4 for the weight and possibly doubling as a travel lens

However they are all so expensive, and the lenses on your table in this video are like $5,000+ dollars and I can't afford that rn. So if anyone reading these comments knows about a more cost effective way to upgrade some lenses I really need it💀. However this video was really helpful and I just wish I could actually afford 3 different lenses for a shoot lol.

    Do you always buy your lens from the same company as your camera manufacturer? I.e. Sony, Nikon or Canon? Or are there 3rd parties that you feel are comparable? If so, could you do a video on which would be those companies and what to look for when purchasing one? I am an amateur photographer who is just starting to get my hands dirty with various lens.

    • @bozmundarts2614
      @bozmundarts2614 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes they're comparable, sometimes worse, and sometimes much better! For example the new sigma 35 1.4 has quite slower focus and more noticeable chromatic aberrations than the also just as new sony 35 1.4 g master which focuses quite faster, has less aberrations and it is smaller too!
      But then the sigma 85mm 1.4 dg dn is smaller, faster focusing and sharper, than the holy expensive sony 85 1.4 g master! (Which David seems to have) so it truly depends tbh on the time of release, technological advances, and if the manufacturer just happens to struggle in the making of that exact lens you want... so search and inform yourself before purchasing! Usually i go with either sony lenses or sigma ones.

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do not use UV filters to protect the front element glass, but I do recommend it for people! Mainly, it's like insurance. You drop the lens or something hits the lens and breaks it, you can then just pop off the UV and on another. But there are issues with glare sometimes and moisture in changing environments. Your call on whether you want to risk it!

      Some ND filters work with the lens hood on there, but most require that you take it off. Especially if you get a variable ND filter! Almost all variable ND filters are too big to use a hood with, but you kind of wouldn't want the hood anyways, because then you couldn't spin the VND very easily 👍
