Ok sir, you just got another sub today. Rygar, Machoman and He-man referenced in one video?!? Wicked! Big fan of Rygar since I was a kid and now a fan of your channel. Thanks for the work making this. : D
Big secret at the end you missed. If you play the flute at the final boss he stops shooting for a few moments. You can do this over and over to make it easier. Pretty epic game still holds up today.
I love the ancient Greek themes in this game, and the highly ambitious design and mechanics. It's such a clever and unique spin on the early action RPG themes. Kind of the missing link between Zelda II and Faxanadu.
Damn right its under rated and underappreciated. I spend countless Saturdays with my late Uncle playing and boy it took us a while. It was fun, great soundtrack, and its a great game to speedrun.
Holy crap! I forgot about Showbiz Pizza! The one in the Greensboro area apparently became Chuck-E-Cheese. You sound like a fellow NC native! Thanks for closing that missing link for me.
Brought back some memories , I remember my brother having a sleep over and him, his friends and I played all night trying to beat this game. When you died you had to give the controller to the next person. After countless attempts of trying to kill the final boss, I was the one to finally take him down and had the gloating rights over my brother until we could save enough for the next NES game, which was Russian Attack. LOL... Great Video!!!
Holy forgotten memories! Thank you! I loved that game. It seemed like there was so much effort and love put into that game. I remember that after days of leaving the Nintendo on and almost beating the game, the freakin power went out due to a storm. I never turned the game back on :(. Great video!
The cave with the spider boss at the end, definitely! The best song by far! It had like a prog-rock/jazz melody to it. It's playing in my head right now.
Thanks so much for putting this up! Rygar is one of my all time favorite games! It brings me right back to my friends house when we stayed up all night in 1989 (or 90) playing it. So amazing! The music is so amazing, I still remembered it even years later without hearing it! I finally got to play it again a couple years ago and beat it! That feeling if completion and wholeness swept over me and I can die happy! 👍 Thanks man! One of my adult milestones. After 100s of tries to beat the PAL version the story came to an end 25 years later. Ligar on Pal Rygar is truely one of the hardest nes boss fights.
Dude! I love that music! I'm a musician, and have recently fallen in love with 80's synth music and old video game music. I think I want to go a cover of this music.
Dorago can easily be defeated with Attack and Assail, provided your Tone was well developed. However, DO NOT use this method against Ligar as the screen flash will glitch the end sequence and credits. Great video, my man!
This was a game that always got thrown in at my friends house during my Middle School years. We would sit around the TV eating snacks and taking turns trying to get passed areas.
Love how you add the commercials from back then, never even heard of this Toy Store until this video. I never got into Rygar for some reason when I got it for free from a friend in the late 90s, but I’m going to give it so attention after this video. Thank You and as usual love your videos
Just found your channel and this is my favorite nes game. I've always ground the two flappy unicorns on the screen to the left of your robot. Grapple up and down to spawn them on either side of you. Two birds with one load. Rygar is now free on switch with Nintedo Switch Online.
8:09 Secret 1: If you go to the path on the right, but position yourself high up against the rock wall before scrolling the screen, you can glitch your character into the wall. If you then go back left you can go up into the green colored part and access a normally unexplorable (and glitched) area of this level. There are a lot of strange things there, including even a glitched boss that you can kill to get a big boost to your Mind and Last. I spent countless hours exploring that place as a kid. It gets weirder the further you go. 12:29 Secret 2: Using your grappling hook, you can climb down from the logs and go down into the water. The screen will scroll and you will be underwater. Interestingly, you'll never drown and there will be Olbis monsters down there trying to attack you. 16:08 Secret 3: You can use your grappling hook to climb to the ceiling in the center of the room to fight this boss. If you do that, all the boss can do is climb up the wall and then come to you across the ceiling. As soon as you hit him, he drops to the floor and goes back up the wall again. This makes it very easy to defeat him. 17:00 Secret 4: Use the grappling hook to climb down from the lowest platform. Scroll the screen down, and then climb back up to scroll the screen back up. You'll notice the boss will be positioned slightly lower than he was before and you can jump and hit him without having to climb up to the small platform with him, making him much easier to defeat. 17:28 Secret 5: The Ghelman monsters in this area (with the green on their back) can be multi-spawned by quickly scrolling the screen up and down at one of its spawn locations. You can spawn so many that you can cause the game to slow down and eventually even crash. You can spawn many of them together in the same place, and kill them all at once, quickly boosting your Mind and Last. You can max your stats out in under a minute using this glitch! 17:32 Secret 6: In overhead sections of the game, when you jump you are 100% invincible to all attacks while in the air. If you continuously jump, moving left and right to avoid landing on the boss or his projectiles while hitting him, he becomes one of the easiest bosses to beat. 18:05 Secret 3 can work against this mini-boss as well I don't know if all of these will work quite the same on PAL. I found them all on the NTSC version
Squidian The Bo Fish QnA have u ever heard of this ??? the 1st boss 13:10 theres a glitch were u jump on his back and keep bouncing on his back and stay to the right of the screen. he'll turn and go to the right and get stuck on the tree, (stuck facing the right being on the far right side of the screen) at this point u can stop bouncing and jump off his back. he will stay stuck and you can just stand behind him and blast him till hes defeated .
@@jeffthecoder From what I remember there's a major glitch in Lygar's palace. As soon as you appear through the doorway you see the edge of the floating island to your left. If you jump to the left far enough off the edge, the screen will scroll over to a completely new glitched out palace that you can explore. There are no enemies in it and you can die by falling in certain areas, but you'll be able to walk across the sky and on walls in some cases.
@@miggles7188 Nice. I recently found out about another glitch at 17:00 where you can kind of wedge yourself to the right to force scroll the screen and it shortcuts you to a glitched version of the final boss. When you kill that boss it triggers the ending
Wind pulley : move horizontally where the rope starts. Rygar’s crown just below the wooden pole. Move left and right where the rope is around the chest area without getting too close to the cliff. If not engaging, Tap up or down and try again left and right until it engages. It took me may times to figure this out, but after months or years without playing it, it all comes back as if it was yesterday. I played this game aimlessly for a long time. It was great to find new places and to listen to the music, until my cousin sat down once to play from start to finish and I never forgot the route. I did struggle the first time playing after over a decade. But never again! I still do my playthrough every so often to keep it fresh. Nice video!
Great vid man appreciate your Channel... Rygar was the ORIGINAL Dark Souls! The hero back from the dead to usurp the Lord in a strange, surreal landscape. Fkng dope! And yes... The music is simply Epic.
I made it all the way to the floating palace at 10 years old. My dad would smack the hell out of me whenever I stayed inside all day playing Nintendo and I was not allowed to leave my NES on. So you can imagine the number of bruises and bloody lips I got for this game. I wouldn't trade it for the world. You hit on everything I loved about this game. The sound, the weapon, the quick response time. (compared to other games of this era) Every now and then I run into someone who played this game as well and they ALWAYS love it as much as me. So innovative. Thank you for this video!! I had to put an edit in here. You also threw in my Disney as a kid...Child World!!! I still remember the smell. ❤❤❤❤
@@HegoDamaskll Wow! Just checked out some youtube clips. Looks like they did and awesome job remaking it! As an old school retro gamer,I'm cool with the original but that's totally rad! :D
For the longest time growing up, this was one of THREE games I owned (Rygar, Castlevania, and Spy Hunter). I was a Sega kid so I didn't get an NES until further in its life cycle (I played a lot at friends' houses and all of my money went to Sega games). I loved this game. I learned to just spend a while at the very beginning grinding, it made the rest a LOT easier. Takes a while to build up though. Awesome video, great memories!!!
Rygar was one of my favorite NES game. I am glad you included the music as it was more pleasing/hypnotic than many of the early titles. I never did finish Rygar , even with unlimited continue I never had the patience I guess. Thanks for the vid. Takes me back to those early days.
I remember getting to the last area of this game and my friend's puppy bumped into the Nintendo and made it freeze. That was the only time I thought about kicking a puppy.
I recall starting to get close to the end and every time my little brother came in the room I would put myself between him and the Nintendo as a "shield" of sorts lol
My dad struck a deal with me when i was a kid to eat a sardine. I told him there was no way in the world he could get me to eat something that gross, so he promised me a brand new Nintendo game. I made him promise. I wasnt ten years old yet, so this sounded too good to be true. I choked that nasty thing down. Maybe two weeks later... but what seemed like an eternity... I received this game, in the wrap, picked out by him for me. This game is extra special, on top of being an awesome nes game. Great video! Love your family friendly channel! Do street fighter 2010. Very underrated game. Control scheme is tricky, but once you get a handle on Ken's special moves, the game becomes really awesome to play. It needs a review that will do it justice... there aren't many people that take it seriously. Its my vote for capcoms next nes hd remaster, like ducktales a few years back.
I actually picked up a copy of Street Fighter 2010 a few months back. I need to dig into it. Thanks for reminding me. Dude that is an amazing story of how you got Rygar. Your dad has good taste!
I could never beat it. I always made my dad beat it for me. I remember the day we picked it up. We'd often pause the Nintendo overnight so he could beat it.
How in the hell did I miss this game for the NES!? Rygar looks absolutely Badass! The graphics look great for an NES game and I can tell that the game play and controls work well and are very fun. As a child in the 80s and 90s, I had several friends who all had a NES and not one of them owned this game. What’s crazy about that is that we all would’ve loved it. Thank you for bringing this game to light and showcasing it on your channel. I’m definitely going to try and score a copy of Rygar.
I used to play Rygar every weekend in the arcade and when it came out on the NES bought it immediately. I still have the cart and play it through every once in awhile too, such a great game.
This was and still is one of my favorite NES games of all time. For all the reasos you stated, especially the music. I remember finding a cheat or glitch with the first boss. If you jump over him you can jump on his back over and over... and eventually he just stops moving and shooting fireballs but he still roars. It takes a moment to do and he will switch sides he is facing while you are bouncing. But.. it made him so easy
Amazing video. Total classic. One of the first great Metroidvanias. My big brother and I left the NES on for three days to finish it lol! Thanks for the excellent write-up!
This is easily my all time favorite NES, and Im surprised its not more popular. I literally got chills when you played the music sample. I remember how much I loved this game. It was so different back then. I played it a TON.
Top 3 NES games for me. Beat it once as a kid and recently redid it but had to use a rewind feature because I'm old. Amazing soundtrack all around. Also when you level up and sound fx it makes when you get an extra life bar is epic. Enjoyed the video.
This might have became my fave episode. I tried this game out for the first time a week ago and have been intrigued to learn more about it. Thank you for this gem/treat of a video.
Man the way it starts out with that epic music & that big sun in the background. U knew u were gonna be on a great adventure. Love this game! I feel like this 1 & Bionic Commando are the most underrated games on the nes
I played and beat this game with my dad (who never really plays videogames) when i was maybe 6 or 7 years old, maybe. younger. This game will always be special to me and I pull my NES out every once in a while to play it again!
My oldest brother got our copy of Rygar before I could remember, and it's one of the few ges from my childhood that I still have the same copies of! The music in that game is still some of my favorite from any video game!
Great video, very well done and concise. I never could beat this game, played for a week straight until the power went out in a storm! I have forgotten a lot of things since then, but I remember that feeling like it was yesterday. Enjoyed watching you finish the job for me almost 30+ years later lol
One of my all time favorite games! Fun fact, I used to live in the house next to that fire station in the Showbiz Pizza bit. I bought my first NES games (1942) at the same Children’s Palace. I loved that place!
I really enjoyed your video. Yes, that brings back some memories. I was ten years old when this game came out and I remember it sort of divided my fellow video game fans at the time between those of us who liked the more flashy arcade game vs those, like me, who got into the explore-able world with side quests. What a great soundtrack for the time; I still remember every tune. With all the grinding required and no save option, it sure was a lesson in patience.
Ahhhh... 1988. Rygar ruled. Loved the arcade game too. But the NES version is a beast. I'm glad I have this emulated on my Linux!! Amongst thousands of classic goodies!
You deliver your videos with a childlike sense of enthusiasm and your southern drawl makes for a great narration. Great job, great research!!! Thank you!!! Your Friday the 13th vid was ultra dope too!!!
What a great video. This game was one of the defining gaming experiences of my childhood in the late 80s. My brothers and I would spend days playing it, and the characters and items really did seem "legendary" to me. I remember there was a glitch in the game (forget the specifics) that you could use a grappling hook or pulley to enter into an entirely glitched version of the world. The monsters had heads/legs/pieces that were mixed together, and it really had no end. It was bizarre and one of the cooler things we found. I still remember doing it to this day and showing my friends. This, along with Zelda and Kid Icarus, were the best adventure games of that era.
I love the tips and tricks, really love the history, but what has kept me glued to your back catalog is things like the Children's Palace montage. Keep it up.
This is my first time watching one of your videos, and your approach to them is excellent. Game history, plot, and strategy all packed into less than 30 minutes is how it should be done. You’ve earned my sub. Keep up the good work.
I often times come back to your videos for a quick hit of nostalgic feels. What can we do to bring you back for more videos with this style? Covering game specific content is awesome!!!
LOVE THIS! RYGAR is my all time favorite NES game, with Legacy of the Wizard right behind it. In my opinion, RYGAR has the best soundtrack of any NES game. Hell, I still hum the soundtrack 32 years later!
I played this back in the early 90s when I was 13 or 14. No manual, no internet, no nothing. I had no help except for a friend who told me I needed to play the flute on the tower where you can see the sky castle. My favorite NES game and overall favorite videogame of all time. I wish there were other games like this.
I happen to just run in to this video. I remember doing this as a kid. I played for 24 hours like you said. I remember beating this game. I don't know how I did it but I do know that it was the hardest game I ever played and thats why I still remember it. great video
I just starting playing this last night on my Switch and am remembering all of it from when I first played it back in 87. I beat it back then so I am going to do it again! Great video and very helpful.
I remember playing Rygar at my cousin's for hours. And man, old school toy stores were the best thing ever! Nothing like that special trip to one if you got good grades or did enough chores around the house lol
Thanks for helping me re-live my childhood. I was born in 1976 and got my first nes in 1987. I remember this game but couldn't remember the name. I'm putting it on my nes mini.
Regarding will always have a special place in my heart. This game was the first nes game me and my brothers ever played. I remember going into my local video store that didn't rent out video games or consoles.... till that day, we walked into the store my mom was talking to the clerk and I saw the case. And asked my mom if we could rent that movie. Only to find out it was this game. We rented that and a console. Many years later when me and my brothers were in high school and that same video store was selling old stock. And it was a no Brainer we bought it and my older brother still has the game to this day
Excellent video! Awesome tribute to this game, you captured my sentiments perfectly. Rygar was the first game I bought with my Nintendo after careful study of the boxes of each video game at Toy R Us in 1987. No one else had this game too so it became like my game. Very frustrating, left it on for hours and hours plenty of times. I think I was stuck in the forest for months before the rest of the game began to open up. Eruuga was the toughest before the final boxx. And what a relief & reward it was, to topple Ligar and open the door of peace. Bittersweet in the sense that Rygar has to return to the underworld again after, and you start again at 0. Great memories!
When you take on the spider / crab boss - you stay in the middle of the screen and duck down. It drops on you Doing no damage, and then moves either left or right. By staying ducked down and hitting it as it moves away from you it reverses it’s movement going over you hear again. Then you hit it back and forth and destroy it easily
Rygar is still on my top list. Played it relentlessly with my dad and little brother. We got it used, so never had the instruction booklet. We never caught on that you could/had to grind to get through the game, so we dropped it eventually. Figured out the leveling things years later, and was able to beat the game start to finish in around 30minutes.
This was the very first NES game I got. It is one of my favorite games to this day for all the reasons outlined in this video. My favorite trick was to tape the D-Pad down and the A button to fire his shield in an area where the enemies spawn continuously and come back a few hours later completely powered up! I was 12, cut me some slack!

18:05 Secret 3 can work against this mini-boss as well
I don't know if all of these will work quite the same on PAL. I found them all on the NTSC version
Squidian The Bo Fish
QnA have u ever heard of this ???
the 1st boss 13:10 theres a glitch were u jump on his back and keep bouncing on his back and stay to the right of the screen. he'll turn and go to the right and get stuck on the tree, (stuck facing the right being on the far right side of the screen) at this point u can stop bouncing and jump off his back. he will stay stuck and you can just stand behind him and blast him till hes defeated .
@@3DzineR Nice, didn't know about that one.
Rygar Was so sick. I still have some of the music stuck in my head to This day.
I think Bob Ross will highly praise those 8 bit mountains in this game!
Happy little mountains lol
@@GenerationGapGaming
Indeed!
When Macho Man Randy Savage came on and yelled "OH YEAH!!", I was sold. I played and beat this game back then as well. Great video bro!
This game was dope
No doubt Jermaine! Thanks for commenting man
I made it all the way to the floating palace at 10 years old.
Blaster master
That is a wonderful game. I need to cover it one day!!!
That one was always my #1 right there! I play through this one annually.
Yes! I even bought blaster master zero on switch. It plays a lot like the NES version.
@@HegoDamaskll Wow! Just checked out some youtube clips. Looks like they did and awesome job remaking it! As an old school retro gamer,I'm cool with the original but that's totally rad! :D
Blaster master and Rygar has the best soundtracks of all nes games
For the longest time growing up, this was one of THREE games I owned (Rygar, Castlevania, and Spy Hunter). I was a Sega kid so I didn't get an NES until further in its life cycle (I played a lot at friends' houses and all of my money went to Sega games).
I loved this game. I learned to just spend a while at the very beginning grinding, it made the rest a LOT easier. Takes a while to build up though.
Awesome video, great memories!!!
Rygar is my #2 NES, game of all time!!!
That is awesome man. What is your number 1 NES game??
Rygar was one of my favorite NES game. I am glad you included the music as it was more pleasing/hypnotic than many of the early titles. I never did finish Rygar , even with unlimited continue I never had the patience I guess. Thanks for the vid. Takes me back to those early days.
I remember getting to the last area of this game and my friend's puppy bumped into the Nintendo and made it freeze. That was the only time I thought about kicking a puppy.
lol yeah don't kick the puppy but i would have given it a good talking too!!!! Nothing like the NES freezing up on you. Sucks man.
I recall starting to get close to the end and every time my little brother came in the room I would put myself between him and the Nintendo as a "shield" of sorts lol
I have great memories in the early '90s playing Rygar on NES with my dad. We spent so much time playing that system.
@@GenerationGapGaming good taste in games maybe, but that sardine? Yuck@!!
I could never beat it. I always made my dad beat it for me. I remember the day we picked it up. We'd often pause the Nintendo overnight so he could beat it.
Family friendly? That's great! Im looking for a gaming channel that doesn't use bad language and doesn't mock or insult Jesus christ every 30 seconds.
I love Rygar!!! Great play and took forever! Haha I forgot about the no save, I lost many games , "thanks a lot mom!"
This game was hard as hell when I had it and I was never able 2 beat it.
Rygar was my first NES game my mom bought me. Still love it to this day. Just like U.N. Squadron was my first SNES game. Those were the best times.
WHERES THE RYGAR SOUNDRTRACK?? OH MAN THATS THE BEST PART- PLS ADD! U CANT HVA A RYGAR VID WOUT TYHE SOUNDTRACK!! TY. GOOD VIDEO
A year later, but you're welcome...

I’m definitely going to try and score a copy of Rygar.
well ............you just got a new subscriber!!
Awesome Jason. Thanks so much man! Welcome to G3!!!
I used to play Rygar every weekend in the arcade and when it came out on the NES bought it immediately. I still have the cart and play it through every once in awhile too, such a great game.
Animalized Men Wriggling Eerily. Great band name. Dibs.
Wow that is an awesome band name! Well you did call dibs lol
“Animalized Men Wriggling Eerily” is coincidentally the title of my memoirs. Small world.
That's funny. It's what's on my rap sheet
Amazing video. Total classic. One of the first great Metroidvanias. My big brother and I left the NES on for three days to finish it lol! Thanks for the excellent write-up!
This is the absolute best Rygar video I have seen. Rygar is easily in my top 3 Nintendo games ever. Well done man!
Love this game, played it a ton back around the same time. It had a unique feeling I remember when playing it
Thanks for showing this!
When games were truly fun! Thanks for posting!
This might have became my fave episode. I tried this game out for the first time a week ago and have been intrigued to learn more about it. Thank you for this gem/treat of a video.
That brings bac memorys of endless nes hours!! What a childhood it was!!!
Rygar was my favorite game of all time 😃. Great job on the video, it makes me want to play my game right now 😂
My oldest brother got our copy of Rygar before I could remember, and it's one of the few ges from my childhood that I still have the same copies of!
Amazing game! And the music ROCKS!
You deliver your videos with a childlike sense of enthusiasm and your southern drawl makes for a great narration. Great job, great research!!! Thank you!!! Your Friday the 13th vid was ultra dope too!!!
My friend Jason was the only one in the late 80's I knew of that owned this game... definitely underrated.
When I was an kid I saved my paper route money and purchased Rygar. Love this game.
Just another one of those forgotten gems from my childhood days man those were the days. Thanks for the memories
Rygar is a great old game. Thanks for the play through and the tips!
LOVE THIS! RYGAR is my all time favorite NES game, with Legacy of the Wizard right behind it. In my opinion, RYGAR has the best soundtrack of any NES game. Hell, I still hum the soundtrack 32 years later!
I agree it has the best music on the NES. It's wonderful!
I played this back in the early 90s when I was 13 or 14. No manual, no internet, no nothing. I had no help except for a friend who told me I needed to play the flute on the tower where you can see the sky castle. My favorite NES game and overall favorite videogame of all time. I wish there were other games like this.
Omg! I remember this game when I was so young, but never could find the title. Thank you so much for this!
You are welcome Jason! Glad you enjoyed it man.
I happen to just run in to this video. I remember doing this as a kid. I played for 24 hours like you said. I remember beating this game. I don't know how I did it but I do know that it was the hardest game I ever played and thats why I still remember it. great video
Dude, nice mention of Children's Palace/Child World and Showbiz Pizza! I also love NES Tecmo games.
I played that game over and over again, one of my favorite along with Bionic Commando! Thanks mate.
And it was a no Brainer we bought it and my older brother still has the game to this day
One of my favorites. Played it a ton as a kid. The music is fantastic! Great video as always.
One of my favorite NES games of all times. Thanks for the upload and info.
