The one that he “missed” is called a crossbar challenge. Players routinely attempt to purposely hit the crossbar as it is a smaller target than the goal to show their accuracy and they will do it from farther out as it gets more difficult the farther out you are. Messi in this clip did it off a juggle volley from about half field…soo that really shows his level.
