      Oh, I miss mine terribly. But it didn't get used and without the dual-sync monitor (it broke back in about 2001) the best place for it was the local museum where it could give up its parts to keep their pristine one working. But that card might have changed my mind!

      It's cool, but not terribly cheap:
      "price for each MegaCard shipped via registered airmail is 210eur
      price for the optional X3GS MIDI wavetable daughterboard is 60eur
      (can only be bought with a MegaCard)
      price for the optional MPC010 PCMIDI expansion is 70eur
      (can only be bought with a MegaCard)"
      Euro value is currently very similar to USD.

    I just discovered this channel and I'm hooked. My first job out of College was working at Amstrad Action magazine as a staff writer. My job included writing reviews, news, previews, features and worst of all - entering, debugging and curating BASIC user-submitted games, demos and software. we had to do a stunning amount of that stuff manually. I already knew BASIC from school and home tinkering, but I probably learned more about coding troubleshooting typos (it was ALWAYS a syntax error...) in the submissions as we tested the code before publishing.
    I met a lot of amazing folks that I stay in touch with to this day. And I still work in video games, albeit in the US.

  • @GadgetUK164

    Great video! When the monitor shows 59Hz, that's almost correct! It's likely running at 59.3Hz. When you switch any PAL Megadrive to "60Hz", it's not running at exactly 60Hz, it runs a touch slower than an actual NTSC Megadrive runs. The crystal on the NTSC Genesis is different, and when divided gives a precise 60Hz (actually 59.9 I think). So it's 0.6hz slower than it should be :o)

    • @linoxyard
      @linoxyard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yep! You can switch out the oscillator if you want a 100% NTSC machine, or you can put a VFO in its place and switch between the two speeds

    • @rustymixer2886
      @rustymixer2886 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rustymixer2886 The 59.1 comes from the Megadrive. ie. the monitor is displaying 59.1, because the Megadrive is outputting 59.1. Some games may only render 30, 50, 60 fps, but it's outputting a fixed 59.1 (or 50 in PAL).

    I had one of these in the 90’s and it was amazing. I remember playing shining force 2 on the sega and Ultima 8, Command and Conquer and Dune on the PC. If only teenage me would have known how rare and expensive these would become! It’s been a proper nostalgia trip seeing you restore and upgrade this system. Wonderful to know it’s protected for future generations to see what computers of this era were like. Great job. I just checked and to buy one in New Zealand (where is now live, having emigrated from the uk) will cost me the price of a small car so I will have to make do watching these for now. Hope to see more in the future.

    Nice of Alan to come do some voice work. I like your joke, for most of my life I was scarcely aware there was such a thing as PAL. ^_^ Pretty cool that even the more obscure hardware models can receive mods, what an age.
    Would have loved having one of these in the 90s as I was playing a lot of GEN/MD and just starting to try out DOS games then. The first time I saw this it seemed goofy but now I can appreciate the benefits of it. :)
    I love the 6-button gamepad but can't say I didn't adapt easily to 3-button SF2 quickly, actually a fairly intuitive design the 3Punch/3Kick toggle. People praise the SNES endlessly but it's actually hard to work the L-button in combination with the D-pad in SF2 ijs.

    That's a really nice setup with the Mega Card! I wanted a Mega PC back in the 90's when I was in my teens, it wasn't really ever an option though due to cost etc. I've been looking for a 'sensibly priced' one for quite a while now (few years at least) but they always seem to go for very good money no matter what state they're in (or I always manage to miss bidding on one on eBay). I've got a monitor lined up ready - an Acorn AKF multisync crt - if I ever get one without a monitor, so the scandoubler side of the Mega Card wouldn't really be needed if I bought one but all the other features are definitely very nice to have!

    Interesting how it's a one-button mod, most region mods for the MD/Genesis have two switches, one to switch the region and one to switch the refresh rate, Japan/West and 50/60hz. Games like Streets of Rage would detect being in Japanese mode and display the "Bare Knuckle" title instead.

With that said I have recently discovered the Amstrad library of games via emulation recently (first time trying out the Amstrad ever) and I absolutely fell in love with the computer. I am looking for a way to expand my new Amstrad love and it sounds like back in the day this would have been the best computer I could have possibly bought. Hi Neil, the NTSC standard is not a perfect 60Hz, and with the broadcast colour signal haphazardly crammed in for backwards compatibility reasons, the picture on most NTSC sets were a slightly iffy - PAL was a later standard with the colour signal already future proofed, and whilst slower in framerate always reproduced the picture correctly. It also had the added advantage of being close (divided by 2) to the framerate of cinema. Movies on tape were pushed to 25fps (hence why your PAL VHS movie might be slight 'shorter' than your cinema movie.)

      Yes, I think Casino Night Zone sounds much better at 50hz.

    So the XT-IDE "BIOS" is a BIOS extension, it doesn't replace the BIOS of the system, but it loads in after the main BIOS.

      Thanks for clarifying that

      @@RMCRetro np. BIOS extensions are neat, people sometimes use old network cards to load them because they have a slot for a ROM chip, typically meant to add in a boot strapping solution that directs the network card to download boot data, but you can also use the slot to load in the XT-IDE bios for systems that maybe do already have IDE support but not supporting the spec properly, you'd then disable the built in IDE support.

    I would like to see how Sonic 2 two player versus mode looks on the line doubler as it uses an interlaced mode.
