  • Such an interesting judoka to study. Was originally 29 minutes but had to cut it down a lot. Might make shorter versions of these in the future!

    Very good video. I think Ono is the greatest judoka of this era and maybe also of all time. To dominate like he does in maybe the thoughest weight class is incredible.

      Yes, insane power and strength, but his game plan is way better, he is out of the norm for his grips and style, he knows his strength and plays the rule to his advantage. He is setting the standard for future 73kg judoka.

    Fantastically edited video. It's great that you use clips from multiple fights demonstarting the same point rather than just showing a one off occasion so we can see how consistently he applies these tactics.

    In Brazil we call that ''little cat's grip''. Besides the weird names we brazilians like to call things, it is very used in BJJ, and in the IJF circuit the rule over that grip is that you can do it, but you need to attack as soon as you get it. If you fight for to long using it, its shido.

    • @JudoHighlights2015
      @JudoHighlights2015  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be either a pull or a push. The wave is a generation of force from your legs up throughout your whole body. Look up Go Tsunoda, he doesn’t specifically say it, but you can clearly see it

    Onos one weakness is that the grip he likes to take(armpit grip) is not the best grip for Uchimata. So for his ippon Uchimata he needs to change grip.

    • @JudoHighlights2015
      @JudoHighlights2015  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, but he doesn’t do Uchimata RvR. In fact, most people do uchimata LvR. I think it’s more effective that way

      @simbabwe2907 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JudoHighlights2015 Exactly .And this is one reason why he strugles against heavy weights.Ono is trying to win the all japan championship.If he takes the armpit grip against a heavyweight than the heavyweight doesnßt need to worry about front throws and only about back throws.Koga did Seoinage with the armpit grip.The ancient Judoka Matsushita was able to beat almost everyone with Haraigoshi with the armpit grip..But Ono will find a way i am sure.

    hi can you explain why onos uchi-mata head dive is no hansoku-make? good to see in the fights against raicu and orujov at the tokyo olympics.

    • @JudoHighlights2015
      @JudoHighlights2015  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To my knowledge, head dives are only illegal if you defend with a head dive. Offensively it’s ok? Lol

    • @awesomeman5898
      @awesomeman5898 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The keyword highlighted with red font in Article 18, page 127 of IJF rulebook: headfirst.
      Quote: "diving headfirst onto the mat"
      Ono does mostly spinning uchimata, with both of his hands gripping opponent's gi.
      Combined with the fact that uchimata is done in cartwheel/see-saw motion, 'landing' with head is consequence of the technique but not the intention.
      Therefore, he's not diving headfirst.
      Dangerous? Yes
      Hansoku make? No

    • @juiy222
      @juiy222 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JudoHighlights2015 head dives are illegal if its offensive as well. In particular uchi mata where you put your head down is illegal. The reason Ono gets away with it is because it goes down whilst he is rotating laterally or diagonally rather than him rotating over his head / vertically. The later is illegal the first two are not.

    • @paulstarstarpaul5700
      @paulstarstarpaul5700 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As far as I know it’s on one hand head first, but what’s in that case even more important is that it has to be head first STRAIGHT into the mat. Ono plants his head but doesn’t role straight but to the side.

    • @juiy222
      @juiy222 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulstarstarpaul5700 I've definitely seen disqualifications for head diving even with 2 grips. It frustrates me greatly when this happens because uke has tried to counter by tipping them over the other shoulder and the result is a head dive as this is not tori's fault.

    If it's a pistol grip his attack is legal, because he attacks immediately, but I don't think it's a pistol grip. Ono inserts his left fingers into Orujov's sleeve and is illegal. He did the same against Ugo Legrand in 2013. Because he is a world class judoka and a living legend doesn't mean he plays always fair.

    I know his grip by the name of Cats claw(putting 4 fingers inside the sleave and thumb on outside). I dont belive this is a legal grip.

    • @JudoHighlights2015
      @JudoHighlights2015  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      you mean the fingers are on the inside (grip)? Not actually inside the gi? The thumb I'm still unsure where it is or how he goes from 4 fingers to pistol.

    • @mmongiello722
      @mmongiello722 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JudoHighlights2015 I think he is putting his fingers inside the oppenents sleave palm deep with just his thumb on the outside, then making a fist. It very strong becuase you have full control with your fist stuck to the opponents wrist. Typically, when you see a pistol grip the thumb will be over the fingers and gea will be sticking out of the top.

  • @LêHiếuTô
    @LêHiếuTô 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think that his tactics are mostly based on his dominant athletic abilities. His attacks are very direct, most of the time no feint, no combo, just overwhelm the opponent and crush them. Great to watch but there is not much to learn from this.
