Troy, there are any number of lab tests for lube oil, but these can readily be replicated in the field which I am sure you will know about. For carbon content, one lab test is to put a few drops of sump oil onto absorbent paper and compare the colour. It's nice to have a set of comparator charts, but most people will be able to see when the oil is 'too dark' and requires changing. Similarly a Brooks viscometer tester is the lab method, but an easy field method for testing for fuel dilution is to fill two plastic containers (soft drink bottles) with oil, one sump and one, new oil. Both bottles have a hole drilled in the bottom (check size of holes is the same). Ensure the temperature of both oil samples is the same, fill the containers and measure how long the oil takes to drain out. If the sump oil empties quicker than the new oil, fuel dilution could be a problem and can be detected well before you notice a gross dilution as you found. It is important to do the spot colour test before this test as excessive carbon or 'cooked or burnt' oil will change the viscosity.
what about just weighing and known volume of each and comparing. also my pajero doesnt need a lift pump, the HP one sucks it up fine, maybe yours could too , though maybe not...
Carbon would add weight and fuel is about 80% of the weight of oil by volume. Tricky calculation and my focus above was carrying out a test that the average yachtie could replicate sitting inn the cockpit. Testing with hole in bottom of a soft drink bottle is a Go/No Go answer. If a discrepancy is noted, run the test a second time but change containers to ensure one hole isn't bigger than the other.
I like it. I've used viscosity meters (the little yellow ramps) and this is a neat variation of that idea with everyday items. In fact all the ideas were great.
Diesel has a different odor as motor oil as well. I try to make a habit of making a sniff test while checking oil, so I can recognize of something smells funny. This won't detect small amounts but if your engine is old and burning oil as well you might end up with straight diesel instead of oil without the level rising. Also a point to check on "this old diesel doesn't burn oil at all" used engines, sometimes they're just "self refilling" by leaky injectors or worn rings. Also, if you can't get a hold of a spare part (diaphragm, seal, ...) for the lift pump or its too expensive just grab any diesel rated electric automotive fuel pump. These can't leak into the oil system and are awesome for priming after working on the diesel system.
What a picnic spot that was above the waterfall looking out over the Strait! I have enjoyed similar views, and a beer, perched up on top of a hill in the Inner Hebrides off the the North West coast of Scotland, looking at the islands curving away from me like splashes from a skimming stone.
I like the " have a cup of tea and think about it" approach. Better to slow down and think than to assume your first thought is correct. I use to FIX the HELL out of things!! Replace Everything! Geez..older and slower by default. Thank God and grandkids.
Another Very quick check we use in Aviation Gas Turbine Engines use a Oil Heat Exchanger in either a Fuel Tank or a Matrix around the Oil Pipe It is also a way of Warming fuel to aid Atomization But the Simple check is Dip finger and Thumb in the Oil solution and if Fuel is Present when you rub your fingers together it feels Gritty !!
Two dislikes who are those crazies anyone who knows anything should be able to recognize the high quality of you all's way of life and method of documenting and sharing. Love the Tidal information !! I still am dying to try mud crab I hope to get over across down there to the southern pacific one of these days.
This really goes to show you why one should check their oil for more than just the oils level. Like you said...had you not checked it, you wouldn't have made this crucial discovery. Good for you! Great description on the tides and tidal flows. I always learn something when watching your channel! And a big THANK YOU for Pascale playing camera woman so Troy has his hands free to show and tell! PEACE OUT! Ü
Lovely episode (as usual). The real danger of having a waterhole beer, is finding too many waterholes 🍻😀. Great teaching information on navigation and tidal dynamics. FRS delivers again. Well done Troy and Pascale. Cheers👍
Always enjoy your videos! It’s a combination of technical analysis, geography, human relations and nature All in one! And the best part - no commercials! Sail on FRS!
thats why i watch your vids pal, a source of information and hints tips, open cpn etc, its not just to watch you explore one of the most remote and beautiful places on our planet like the kimberlies!!!! keep the videos coming mate, thouroughly addicted.
USA here. An amazing variety of scenery, equally amazing sailing knowledge and skills! Been watching for a bit, never met anyone ocean sailing, you both provide an inside look to a lifestyle few can amagine. Thank you, wishing you safe and happy sailing.
Hi its great that you are back two vids in two weeks loving it , Im from South Africa and thoroughly enjoy following your trip round Oz ,if I may be so forward as to refer to Australia as Oz , wish our coast was more conducive to cruising , Im referring here purely to S Africa . The water also looks fantastic clear and blue there where you are , Your destinations are quite different from the usual Caribbean and Pacific destinations . I really enjoy the nature side of things and commend you on naming some of the fish species in your vids . I really do appreciate the effort that goes into putting together these vids.
Hahaha "Bloody dipstick" classic mate ;) Loved having you two visit us. From a youtube sailing vlog groupies perspective .... IT WAS FREAKING AWESOME and so SURREAL From a mate, it was great to be able to show you around and give you guys something back after you two have given us so much. Until we meet again mon amis :)
You guys are getting really good at this whole production thing. Very impressive. Really apprecite the eduational aspect Troy thank you, I know when I come here i might actually learn something rather than be fed the turd and propoganda on tv. You have gone back to to doing what you are good at, being awesome people making a difference whilst enjoying yourselves. Carry on! Hope you get the engine stuff sorted and you seem like you have a cold towards the end so get well soon. Ta
You island friends have a truly beautiful esthetic. As do you two, of course. These films are spectacular. PS Troy sounds a little congested near the end. Hope y'all are doing okay. ~Hans
Thanks so much for this Ep, I just checked my dip stick and sure enough the same thing, as I have been messing about with the lift pump for my diesel heater!!! You definitely save me a a few $$$$ I owe a you guys beer mate !
Tashi Delek! That map, looks like a bear wearing a cape. Whatever it is that needs to be figured out in our lifetimes, you two are living it. Great learning experience from your top notch videos-where do you find that music? Thanks for sharing all that deep nature knowledge, great cooking lessons from masterchef Pascal and common sense lessons in nature. Everything seems quite safe because I think dude has google connected to his hat. The caves are special in previous episodes. Getting that fish back with the spear on the beach was unbelievable. If it isn't enough that you guys are like pros at everything, the peace within you guys is beautiful.
Thanks guys love your chanel, watch loads of utube sailing chanels but got to say your advise is awsome. As a engineer to trade i am used to fixing stuff myself but the little gems like the fuel lift pump and wind turbine from before are great. Would of probably got there in the end but after watching this i will rember to check first 👍
You forgot to mention that oil thinned with diesel can be sucked past the piston rings and then become the fuel. This results in running on. The engine will be difficult to stop. In a car you jam it in gear, drop the clutch and stand on the brakes. In a boat, engine revs will increase until the engine is destroyed. Troy may know how to stop it. Troy mentioned that diesel destroys the lubricating properties of the oil. So you will hear the engine begin to knock. Immediately stop the engine.
i ho pe you liked roko jason and his mum do a good job welcoming people and as you know the fishing is good up there.when i stayed there the resident crock came through the camp knocking over the benches around the fire to get to the fishheads on the fire.there is an old stone pier to the south .looks like the pier had a bit of damage there used to be a shed at the end for cleaning the pearl frames and a fish cleaning table
Are there still a heap of wild deer on Prince of Wales Is? It's difficult believing those islands are dry dust bowls for nine months of the year. I guess that's the Australian bush isn't it. Just add water and stand back for the show but it's fleeting. The area around Port Moresby is the same but you don't need to go far inland to find rainfall measured in metres. Thanks for the video.
Theres still a decent population of deer on POW. The advent of quad bikes thinned them out a bit but even still, there is plenty of thick rough ground for them to retreat to.
I've had a similar situation on my old Ford 861 diesel tractor. The fuel injector pump is driven by a gear on a shaft that sticks down into the lower end of the engine. An o-ring seal failed, allowing fuel to dribble into the oil pan.
wow that was very good info on the charting , looked like fun couple of days, good idea on the fuel lifer I will have to note that for things to check when thing go wrong whit the number two. thanks see you next time.
I have a Microsoft Surface computer and it looks like this OpenCPN nav software will work just fine in it. Since I'm landlocked in Ohio presently, I just saved all the installation software so it's ready when the boat shows itself. I can understand why tides in the area you're in could be a bit tricky after you showed us the importance of studying its restricted tidal flows. Troy was like a crime scene detective with a nasty cold! Open CPN comes with a bunch of plug-in software that is very cool. I think NOAA releases free charts for America according to Open CPN website. We are still testing the Memory Map software which is free and allows purchase of individual maps as you need them from a digital store.
That looked like a Yanmar 2gm20 in your boat, I've had one in my boat since we bought her nearly 20 years ago and it's never missed a beat! Only the other week I did a 40 hour round trip under engine..... I've serviced it every year with good quality oil and generally look after. Great engine..
Another great video loaded with info. Loved it! Strange to see it so open under the trees on the walk to the falls. Hope you're both enjoying some slack time on the refit.

Had that fuel pump issue on a girlfriends car. Engine went from good to needs a rebuild, in less than 30 miles. If the gravity feed works just take a 1/4 inch thick piece of aluminum and cut out a blanking plate to bolt to the engine in place of the pump(don't forget the gasket). Yes, the oil and filter have to be renewed immediately before you turn the key again. I would change the oil again after a decent run though that's not as important as say, if you found water in the oil.
Another great video with great music. Did you change your engine oil after you found the fuel in the oil? The tide/flow information was interesting as I am not a sailor.

Love the Tidal information !!
I still am dying to try mud crab I hope to get over across down there to the southern pacific one of these days.
Loving your videos and the discussion about charts, tides and currents. Imagine Captain Cook navigating all this?
Look up Phillip Parker King sometime for an unsung marine surveyor of the highest order. He achieved incredible feats.
Great footage as always and I love the technical explanation of the tides and resulting currents etc..
Wow! Your adventures inspire me to the possibilities that are all around. Living large, or free ranging, is a lovely inspiration!
Greetings from Galveston Texas!

great information and I love the respect that you have in the beginning of the video, very respectful, good job
How good is that kid's upbringing. Sooo many adventures.
Lovely episode (as usual). The real danger of having a waterhole beer, is finding too many waterholes 🍻😀. Great teaching information on navigation and tidal dynamics. FRS delivers again. Well done Troy and Pascale. Cheers👍

Yes your coastline definitely has some hostile stretches but boy does it produce some good sailors!
Great one Troy and Pascale. Nice to see Troy using Occam’s Razor again when trouble shooting.
My favourite razor.
Open CPN Who knew. Now all I need is boat, an ocean the the knowledge to sail it:) Great vid as usual
Your channel has quickly become the highlight of my week!
Excellent
Your detailed videos are awesome!
I could totally live there. Thanks for sharing

That flu made Pascale lose her voice but it seems there's no way to stop me from talking!
Nice catch on the diesel issue. Thanks for another great vid. cheers.
Always enjoy your explanations. So clear and to the point. Carry on, mate.
Troy and Pascale. Thanks for another beautiful informative video. All the best to you both!!
Norm in sunny hot Arizona :-)
Thanks for going to the trouble to explain all that👍
Some more lovely places that you visited😊
Darn it was just getting in to the video and it was finished - always packed with cool information and tips 😁😁
Great footage guys . Enjoyed the tech side too . Fanx muchly
nice work on the motor. loved the dog, not a bark i heard what was the dog? thanks for visiting the lookout though, its the closest i've been.
That was really cool man 👍
I liked those grills too
Gave you a little shout out in my last video
Much appreciated my friend. Take care, T&P
Thanks so much for this Ep, I just checked my dip stick and sure enough the same thing, as I have been messing about with the lift pump for my diesel heater!!! You definitely save me a a few $$$$ I owe a you guys beer mate !

Your instructional videos are the best!
Luv ya vids as usual very well crafted it’s warm in uk today 29 degs so like you two am goin to knock the top of one cheers

It can be a real menace! Hard to evaluate for the layman too but if happened once, you never forget to check for it first.
Love the videos and views amazing scenery
lol i had that back in the 70 on a hilman hunter "classic car now "
Great sound track at 11:30 ish

Very imformative! Thank you for sharing!
I'm a big Yanmar fan. Very reliable diesel engines and quite economical
Another great video loaded with info. Loved it! Strange to see it so open under the trees on the walk to the falls. Hope you're both enjoying some slack time on the refit.
Nice one guys!! I need a FRS T shirt...I might look educated then 😊👍
Soon....
Cool video.
Fun in the Sun thanks
"This is our version of mowing the lawn"
As alwayes an excelent video. For all us non Australien it woul be nice if you starts every video
with a map showing where you are. You could start with navionic showing Australia and then zooming in to your lokation. just an idea :-)
It's almost like you watched us make our latest video.
Hi thanks again so very interesting to learn about our amazing waters. Hope to be out there soon.
Great info
Very informative, thank you! Will be a while until I make it around to that side but good information to have.
Great episode guys, what a life eh.....
one person gave a thumbs down ,they must not like your taste in beer ,, good find on the diesel leak ,,, yup check the oil everyday ,,,
Another great vid.
If the gravity feed doesn't work, either replace the pump, or make the blanking plate and install a 12v universal fuel pump external to the engine (make sure the 12v fuel pump is diesel compatible). Back in the day, you could buy mechanical fuel pump blanking plates for most popular American V-8 engines. If you switch to an electric pump you probably will want to wire it through the ignition so it starts and stops with the engine.
Another very good work around.
First class as always
For giggles one day try making a relaxing video with just music and scenery because you are pretty good at it and it would be so soothing for the soul! Nice job as always Troy with your trouble shooting and technical expertise about when and how you should sail with the tides.
We have a side project just for you
m.th-cam.com/video/Sp95g7vKB8E/w-d-xo.html
Free Range Sailing beautiful, thanks! Do you have one above the water as well?
If we do it will just be attached to FRS but honestly I think we've hit our limit for just us two.
Free Range Sailing no worries mate! I totally understand the time it takes to film everything and then trying to do all the editing you end up with barely any life left for yourselves! Live your lives for yourselves and if you feel like sharing your adventures I'm quite happy with the top quality of videos you put out! Fair winds ,,,,,,/),,,,,,
Take a look at AyeTides for the iPad or iPhone, for about 2 dollar you have Tides and tidal currents around the world and you don’t need a internet connection fort he program to work.
Hi,
great episode again.
Do you coppercoat your hull? if not, why and what antifoul do you use?
Great tip about OpenCPN only pity that they don’t do an App version for tablets
keep the videos coming
thanks
Manuel
Been running Jotun Sea-Guardian. It seems like a pretty good product. I'm not a hull coating expert and just go with what worked on vessels I've worked on. There is bound to be a better system I'm not aware of.

Great tip on the fuel pump ⛽️.... did you change the oil ?
You bet we did!
Thanks for another great vid ! Federal Minister of Tourism better be paying you right, you two earn it.
Are you guys heading down to Brisbane
Yep, keep an eye out for us and come for a beer.
Fun episode. ,,,,,,,,,/),,,,,,,,,fair winds you two.
Fig sap similar to caustic mango sap?
Take warts right off.
Hi Troy. Love ya channel. I'm hooked. I downloaded opencpn but I've got no charts. How do u get charts for it?
have a search for CM93 file. It's big though. Covers a lot of the world.
Free Range Sailing thankyou! When you coming our way? We are at wynnym manly brisbane.
Wow, bad news on your engine. Hopefully it wasn't diluted for too long. The headache would be that you wouldn't notice the subtle change in sound because it would have changed as the dilution increased. I hope it's not done any damage.
Looks ok. We check the dipstick before starting as our pre check so it was a new occurrence.
I would be interested to know what make of boat it is, or is it a one off?
Clansman 30, 1969. There's good info on Google
Hi, another great tip about troubleshooting the engine. Did you have to drain and flush the engine and then replace the diluted oil?
Yes, the oil and filter have to be renewed immediately before you turn the key again. I would change the oil again after a decent run though that's not as important as say, if you found water in the oil.
Is there any tidal generation going on up there? Those are some fast currents.
Thanks for the video. Enjoyed it.
No tidal generation. I think the population is too small for the expense. They do have two wind turbines though.
Another great video with great music. Did you change your engine oil after you found the fuel in the oil? The tide/flow information was interesting as I am not a sailor.
Oh yes, the oil definitely got changed out and the filter.
Thanks for using my music! Love the video :)
You're very welcome we love your tunes and use them often!
I have recently downloaded Opencpn. I assume that in Aus you need to purchase your charts. Which charts do you have?
CM93 but we also use the Memort Map software which is free but allows you to use the charts as a pack or piecemeal as you require them
Just a quick question... I've noticed your windvane is rather far off the stern. Is there any advantages to having set so far off?
Walking around without any shoes on??? What about all those biting and stinging or both bichos they have in Australia?
We do ok with the wildlife.
How old are you both?
