    I am very inpressed with this model. It is a very neat and tidy design. Thank you for providing it for free.
    I printed mine using 3DPrintLab PlolyLight LW-PLA. Prusa supply this filament and have also made printer settings available on their website. I only had to adust the printer settings to suit my somewhat modified Anycubic Mega S and my core XY printer of my own design. Printing the parts was like shelling peas.
    Like others, I have found I will need weight in the nose to get the C of G correct. Having painted all but the control surfaces, I was fearful it might then be over weight. 990grams without the battery must be the upper limit!? My model weighs in at just 950grams, WITH a 2200mah 3s battery! I am going to print a cowl from regular PLA for weight, durability, and as a suitable place to locate the nose weight needed. If the all up weight had been an issue, I would look to mount the elevator and rudder servos further foreward. I am so looking foreward to getting this in the air. Thanks again.

For the 8mm i might try to tape 4 skewers together seems to be a good fit.

      Hi Larry, this Design was meant to be printed with S3D and uses it's feature to change profiles at a specific Z-height. Other slicers might need workarounds to achieve the same results which I cannot provide. However, I'm currently working on a V2 which is compatible with all slicers and will provide settings for each of them.

    It's a very cool design and looks very well designed but from my limited experience with 3D printing RC Planes, I don't suggest to print parts in Dark colours. For Example the canopy I would have printed it in natural LW-PLA and then painted it In grey but certainly not Black, If you forget the plane is exposed into the sunlight it will warp in no Time, Unless you use the new LW-PLA HT.

    • @3dblackbox
      @3dblackbox  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yes thats true but it depends on the circumstances. I fly mostly at afternoon, in an area with relativly low temperatures, so I don't have a problem with warped parts at all. Keeping it in the shadows to avoid direct sunlight helps, too.

    • @leonidkalinin2701
      @leonidkalinin2701 ปีที่แล้ว

      @3DBlackbox LW-ASA allows do not care about heating by hot air and the sun, but this material requires enclosure for printing. I have good experience with LW-ASA from colorFabb. The main thing do not go below 0,6 with the extruder multiplier, otherwise details will be very crispy.

    • @ripmax333
      @ripmax333 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leonidkalinin2701 LW-ASA is very brittle, or at least its what they say. But now there is also LW-PLA HT ( high Temp ), but you have to print it with more flow so the model might be a little more heavy than normal LW-PLA.

    • @leonidkalinin2701
      @leonidkalinin2701 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ripmax333 I've built 3 planes out of LW-ASA and can not agree. Of course the I used a good printer with a high temp hot end and well insulated enclosure. With proper settings this material is the same good as LW-PLA in terms of stiffness (maybe be slightly heavier). ColorFabb is an experienced manufacturer and tests a little bit products before launch.

    is there a trick to getting a cr10 to work with your S3D files once i change it from your default file to my cr10s v2 pro it changes the parameters to 30% infill for some reason then tries to start printing in mid air

    • @3dblackbox

      The only settings that need to be changed are the printer specific settings in the "gcode" tab of S3D like the bed size and Firmware configuration according to your printer. Also please make sure to select all processes before you slice it If there are multiple.

    I have printed the first part of the fuselage now and just noticed that mine is closed at the end and yours in the video is open as you have to slide them into each other. is this a problem of my printer/loading the files or is it normal and i have to cut it open?

    • @3dblackbox
      @3dblackbox  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a problem with your print settings. This Design is only compatible with S3D. The .factory Files include the necessary print settings. However, I'm working on a new version which is compatible with all slicers and it's going to be released soon.

    • @TimsFPVundROVfootage
      @TimsFPVundROVfootage หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@3dblackboxThanks for responding so quick! But i found the solution to the loading problem already! @all Bambulab users you will have to set "slice gap closing radius" in Quality tab to 0 (this will make the slicer to load in the structural elements inside the Fuselage) and also you will have to set "Top shell layers" in the strength Tab to 0 (only for the parts where another part needs to be inserted in , for example Fuselage Fuse F1 ) right now im printing in vasemode , is it really durable enough with only one wall layer?!

    • @3dblackbox
      @3dblackbox  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This Design makes use of S3Ds Feature to Change settings at a specific z-height. You might be able to print certain parts, but some won't print as intended in other slicers, because they require top-layers or two walls e.g. the tips of the rudder and elevator (to close the parts) , the landing gear etc.. These parts are also using Vase Mode to keep it lightweight. Using normal mode and top layers for these parts will add top layers to the internal structure as well resulting in more weight and likely abtail heavy plane. It's a complex problem that can't be solved effectively by other slicers which is why I recommend S3D for this build. For the second version of this plane, I changed of the geometry to make it entirely printable in Vase Mode.

    • @TimsFPVundROVfootage
      @TimsFPVundROVfootage หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@3dblackbox yeah im really struggling to print the parts as im farily new to 3d printing in general!
      Right now im looking which parts need to be open to fit into each other , those i print with the Vase mode using the settings i mentioned before. And other parts like rudders ,elevators or the landing gear which needs to be closed im printing with different settings.
      How do i find the CG?
      "CG: 80 mm behind the leading edge of the root"- Is the Edge of the Root the Edge of the wing?

    Hi, its a really really nice design ngl I will def build this in the next few weeks. But is it actually possible to fly 3d aerobatics or F3A with it? And can I upscale it ? lastly, can I print this in normal PLA or maybe even LW PLA and PLA combined ?

    • @3dblackbox
      @3dblackbox  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! It can do 3D aerobatics and I have flown (inverted) hovers , torque rolls, knife edge spins, flat spins etc. without any problems. I guess it can do a lot more, which I'm not capable of as a pilot. The cowl and the first fuselage part can be printed in regular PLA. The rest of the fuselage as well as the wings should be printed in LW-PLA. I printed it completely in LW-PLA except for the motor mount and wheels. Upscaling is not recommended, because the tolerances of the internal structure would be off and the electronics, carbon spars, screws etc. wouldn't fit anymore. Good luck with the build!

    • @3dblackbox
      @3dblackbox  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ace-dh5lz If you want to fly it, please stay away from regular PLA. LW-PLA foams to a layer width of 0.54mm. The inner structure and tolerances are dialed in for that value and most likely would be way off and the ribs won't stick to the hull. A twice as heavy rear would make at least a 4x heavier battery necessary to reach the CG.

    • @_NFE

      @@3dblackbox I think I'm running into this tolerances problem with the pre-foamed polylite lw-pla and slicing in cura. Inner ribs are printing with almost a .5mm gap to the outer skin. Looks like I might need to grab the foamy stuff.
      edit: Might have been my slicing mode (was set to surface) - put it back on normal and now the inner ribs double up and look to be closer to the skin
      edit 2: TBH, I'm more confused now than anything. I think the doubled up internal structure is wrong after trying to zoom in on the video? Not really sure what it is supposed to look like. Is there a discussion somewhere of others printing your design.... rcg or discord maybe.

    First awesome that you provide this for free. It might be the best free printable aeroplane I know.
    A lot seem to be inspired by Eclipson, except the battery strap which is closer to the one on Craycle (which I also like more than Eclipson's way) and magnets canopy are pretty neat (Planeprint Noto has them as well if I recall). Also super cool that the "factory" files are included.
    Issues I can see:
    - I don't see the recommended slice settings (outside of "vase mode"). I'm used to printing planes so I'd guess good values but more people wouldn't. Also generally parts of the fuselage (e.g. near the motor) are often in PLA as they need to handle stronger forces. Most people use Cura.
    - Way too many CF tubes and 5 different kinds of rods. CF is awesome however it's expensive and I usually don't have it in stock especially short tubes. It is required for wings but I'd avoid CF in the tail, latch, and if you remove the landing gear then almost all of it is gone. Instead I'd use either small printed tubes, 1.75mm filament directly, or TPU/TPE hinges (Craycle has them for free as well).
    - I'm worried about the structure strength it looks like there is no CF tube that goes between both wings and through the fuselage. Also the wing to fuselage attachement video clip is missing.
    - CF tubes ordered online are usually 50 cm long and not 100 cm, so getting a 80 cm CF tube isn't easy. Together with my previous point, I'd suggest to have 3 or 4 tubes of 50 cm in the wings instead of 2 of 80 cm.
    - Overall it needs too many kinds of screws (e.g. some 1.6x4mm and some 1.6x6mm).
    So almost all my issues with this plane is that it needs too many small parts to be bought.
    nit: for tires I used TPE A83 which was awesome. I'd suggest to go as soft as you can print almost.

    • @3dblackbox
      @3dblackbox  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, thanks for sharing your thoughts, I'm glad you like it overall.
      This design makes use of S3Ds multi process function, therefore it's not recommended to use other slicers. The slicer settings are included in the factory files. You can print the first to sections from regular PLA, but it's strong enough when printed from LW-PLA due to the internal structure. The video doesn't show the assembly of the wing, but you can see, that a single 8x800 mm tube is used, that goes through the fuselage and the wings. The wings are secured by a nylon screw inside of the fuselage.That section could have been clearer though. If you want to use multiple tubes, these need to be interlocked (two 8mm tubes connected through a 6 mm tube on the inside). The length of cf tubes seems to vary in different countries. 1000 mm is the most common size where I live. The 1.6 mm screws are used for the cowl and servos. Both could be glued instead, but I'd suggest to get one of the boxes on amazon that include various sizes. Best luck with the build and maiden, I hope to see yours flying soon.

    • @WernerBeroux
      @WernerBeroux ปีที่แล้ว

      @@3dblackbox Yes I agree with most of what you say and glad to hear I misunderstood how the wings attach. I find 1m CF in shops but they cost like 5x the price of online shops. What Eclipson did is that part of the wings have two partially overlapping CF tubes.
      It's a shame for me to require S3D. Cura has similar features (let me know if you want help). I wonder if 3MF format has something like that to make it cross compatible.

    • @3dblackbox
      @3dblackbox  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WernerBeroux Unfortunately Cura doesn't have the same features. You can adjust some settings using modifiers, but it's still limited as well as Prusa Slicer when it comes to multi processes at a given Z-height. .3MF files are mostly not cross compatible. The only thing that translates from one slicer to another is the part itself and its orientarion. Cura is the worst when it comes to saving project files, that contain all the necessary information about the settings. Still I understand your frustration not being able to use the slicer of your choice, which is the reason why I provide files for all slicers, a documentation about the settings, as well as .gcodes for i3 based printers for my upcoming release.

      @@3dblackbox That's interesting. What couldn't do with the modifiers? Especially a “Support Blocker (E)” shape set as "Cutting mesh" you can then change pretty much all slicer settings within that volume. You can also scale that volume of course.
      I haven't tried exporting Cura project files, and I didn't see instructions of the required settings or files for other slicers that include the multi-processes step you mention.
      I guess it's more complex than most FFF planes that usually only adjust the top/bottom layers and infill per part.

    • @3dblackbox
      @3dblackbox  ปีที่แล้ว

       @Werner Beroux Support blockers (modifiers) set as cutting mesh do not work when combined with spiralize outer contour. So for example adding another wall doesn't work to close a shape at the top. Printing it without spiralizing will result in retractions, which can lead to significant stringing with LW-PLA. While it is not impossible to print it using other slicers, the quality of the results may be compromised, and therefore, I cannot recommend it or provide files for other slicers.
      The instructions and project files for all slicers I mentioned pertain to a new aircraft that has not yet been released.

    • @3dblackbox

      The elevator is symmetrical. Only the small piece with the servo arm is not. The Wings doesn't have washout. The landing gear has no Infill. You can check the S3D factory files for the settings.

      @@3dblackbox Is main wing symetrical? The sections with servo pockets clearly need to be on the correct side but the other wing sections look like they could go on either left or right side. I only asked because I printed all L & R wing parts but then later got them mixed up and couldn't tell which ones were supposed to be right or left except for one with servo pocket.

      Nice to hear you managed to print it with cura. Please be aware, that the elevator and stabilizer tips probably need modifiers in cura to print correctly and close the top of the part.

      LW-PLA is necessary to reach the CG. PLA would be very tail heavy.
