Funny thing about the big eyes: Even the largest eyes in anime tend to be smaller than most western cartoon eyes (Both in size and ratio to the head), the difference is actually the smaller mouths and eye to mouth ratio.
@@soasertsus Yup think I've heard that too. Eyes get more detail in manga as well to make characters stand out even in black and white, alongside hair.
I was the one in chat who tossed out the Disney reference during this stream, so figured I'd chime in. The research done wasn't by Disney directly, but occurred in the 1940s by Konrad Lorenz, which was about the psychological response to “baby schema” which is the facial/eye proportions in infant mammals. This is a contributing factor to why humans think baby animals are cute, but also an influence on mammals being more amicable & caring towards infants even if they're a different species, as it's one of those patterns that is really deeply coded in our brain. The 1930s-1940s was around the same time that Osamu Tezuka (the godfather of manga) was forming largely what became the foundation of manga, which would go on to eventually also be anime. He was heavily influenced by the style of then-contemporary Disney (Bambi, Dumbo, Snow White & the Seven Dwarves), and so those influences had a lot of cross-pollination, with variance that is respective to both. There's an essay by Steven Jay Gould that looks at changes in Mickey Mouse's facial proportions over time, and how that changed perception of the character, that hits at this in some good detail if that's the sorta thing that you're into digging in deeper on. Essentially, when it comes to animating, clearly emoting with characters whose proportions are exaggerated in a way Cartoons could really do differently than most other media, this is what drives a lot of that subtly, even when it's not being done as an explicitly manipulative design consideration, there's a bias that will shift towards that.
@@soasertsus There're some other factors and non-cultural nuance to this as well. Direct eye contact is something that can often trigger a fear response, but that's not as much the case when it's coming from something with "baby schema" because it doesn't immediately read as a potential threat (hence why people aren't averse to approaching baby animals). This also gets reinforced by how widened eyes are more fearful (trying to take in more light) & narrowed eyes focused on something are picking a particular focus with binocular vision which is a predatory hunting pattern. When it comes to facial recognition, Western countries with individualist cultures tend to focus on specific details, whereas Eastern countries with collectivist cultures tend to look at the whole face at once. That's one reason that there's a potential to be a slight bias in exaggerating the eye size more in Japanese animation vs. Western animation since the eyes don't have explicit focus. (There are similar differences from this type of influence even in how much whitespace vs. clutter you see in Japanese vs. Western advertisements & web design). I believe the bit about eyes comes from a Japanese proverb, but "Eyes are the window to the soul" hits at a similar trait in the West. The most explicit cultural difference is probably in traditions like Geisha which do a lot of things to conceal emotions from being displayed outwardly and meaning that they have to be read through subtle nuances in speaking just in the eyes, though it's difficult to say how much that holds an influential weight. I'm more aware of the mask-wearing normalization in Eastern countries because they're largely collectivist cultures, where the individualism of Western cultures lacks the cultural social pressure to reinforce that as well. If there is a study or article on the Sunglasses vs. Mask thing, I'd definitely want to check it out.
Noel's Knight Dance Skill: "Gain Dance Gauge that fills when moving or taking damage. When full, Noel creates a Holy Aura dealing 50% damage for 10 seconds. Damage and size of the aura increases by 3% for every 10 Max HP." He's tries to max that when using the character, but sometimes Smith and Ross just walk into enemies for no reason.
the good thing about holocure is that, even if you don't care about hololive or vtubers in general, still is very fun to play, and that's the important part, you dont need to watch vtubers to enjoy the game.
There are more weapons and items you could unlock to give yourselves more options, via the "achievements" that can be checked in the main menu. Many of which are just reaching 10 min with different specific characters, so dont even need to win a round.
"Larger eyes in anime make it easier to depict emotion more accurately, making characters more relatable. The position of the eyes, the shapes and colors of the pupils and iris, and their gradations allow animators and designers to portray a character's entire personality and story with just the face." Also, Chibi or "super-deformed" anime styles does not equal perversion. It was/is used in animation to depict exaggerated forms of emotions - temper tantrums, extreme joy, extreme sadness, etc... - for comic relief. It's shown to represent 'playful' emotional responses. Of course, there are creeps and shit in ANY culture/fandom...
Plus as someone who isn't into vtubers or anything but watch anime and read manga, making them more cute doesn't mean sexual attraction. You can find a little girl to be cute without that being sexual attraction.
The cat shaped face thing is most noticeable from the side profile of most ‘moe’ styles where the nose slopes out but then seamlessly blends with the lower half of the face creating a slightly snout like look. Of course there’s plenty of adult targeted anime with more mature looking characters but they’re never gonna be what defines the zeitgeist the same way Severance isn’t gonna have people selling merch in artist alleys the way they do for like teen DC shows.
Fair bit of it is also foreign marketing skewing the results - not a lot of places feel that anime or manga aimed at more mature audiences is going to sell or do well in foreign markets, so they don't import it with the end result being that most of that stuff doesn't leave it's country of origin (including Korean works in the like as well). This creates the perception that those are the only things available because it's the only thing the market is exposed to, when the reality differs. That's not saying shounen/shoujo works aren't *popular* (because they are!), but that abroad things are definitely heavily tilted the way they are. Pushback is hit or miss - depends on the market's willingness to go looking for other things, but mostly it relies on nerds looking for (or producing) fan translations and thus the total penetration into the zeitgeist is low. S'kind of neat stuff to look into how marketing can affect culture that way, yanno? It's also why more 'adult' themed animated movies don't tend to do well - heavily skewed market trends based on the presumption that something is "for children" or only for comedic purposes, and thus those are the only projects getting greenlit and thus the idea continues...

My favourite historical BL is Winter Cicada, a beautiful rendition of the war that took down the Shogunate and reinstated the Emperor, and how tragic and needless it was.
I wonder if the background for this anime debate is the real thing that's apparently going on in Japan, I heard that some organization is trying to get rid of the classic cute anime girls because they look like children. Was debating whether or not to comment on the whole anime thing since usually it just divulges into arguing but to me I find it more strange that Trott can look at the majority of the Holo members and the initial reaction is that they look like children. I think as well it kinda highlights how people just seem to ignore that there is a good portion of women who tend to look younger to the point where Bijou and Gura have both talked about being mistaken as kids before. I'm not saying there isn't instances where the intended effect is that of child characters, but it's just such a leap to say that they all look like children.
I'll give some advice. For Calliope you want to increase her main weapon and skills. Her skill 'death' is extremely good for dealing with large groups of enemies more so when you combine it with stamps that would increase haste, range and the explosive stamp can chain the effects of 'death'. For Noel her skills are pretty good in of themselves but her weakness is in regards to DPS, its low and that can cause enemies to over crowd and reduce your performance. The best way to play her is to bridge the gap and go all in on DPS. Now health items are good and all but its generally something you want to restrict to just 2 items max. The best way to survive is to increase your level and DPS as fast as possible that way the enemies would be unable to damage you unless you run straight into them. Also upgrade your stats in the shop, whilst yes the levels do recommend you do to a certain degree it improves you odds of reaching the 20 minute mark if you stat boost beyond the recommendation.
