I was still in bed in the morning when i watched this video and i was shocked by it. I just started learning plc through your course on yt some weeks ago and it was totally disappointing to hear that i did everything wrong! I jumped out of bed at half of the vid and tried to listen more carefuly. And then i checked the calendar...
During your intro my jaw was on the floor. Once you stated your case, I could not agree more. A 5-minute video shi*ting all over Rockwell is exactly what I needed for my Monday. Thanks Jakob, and Happy Coding, Developers :D
Wow, you just explained how an electrical firm, my old company hired, worked!!! They used Rockwell, all Global variables and tested live before production started😮 and machines always broke down off hours! How did you know the average Rockwell programmer?!
LOL, this is GREAT!! I am in the process of shifting a system from the AB micro800 to the Beckhoff CX7000. just finished your Beckckhoff Tutorial - which was EXCELLENT!!!. Tell your wife I said hi from Oregon. This video was some fun icing on the cake. I plan to share it with my Beckhoff sales rep but I am going to bite my tongue and not send it my AB rep.
When I saw you clickbait I was in shock for a sec and ready to sell my beckhoff hardware... Thank God for April 1. Lol as usual great content. P.S. the way you keep that straight face and posture while stating the obvious... just priceless.
For version control I have written a powershell script to take the l5x xml elements apart and commit the parts in different files, I then reassemble them and import it when I want to code again. It doesn't work though, so I just commit the acds.
As someone who have been working on Beckhoff technology my heart stopped for a moment when I saw the title. Then I realized what day it was (yesterday) and thank god Beckhoff is still one of the good guys.
I worked with Siemens many Years, AB few times - but now I have my first machine on Beckhoff because I need PC embeded for communication with DB, AVR and so on. I learn use beckhoff from your stuff, Thank You. ADS looks good for data exchange, with Siemens it's hard - You have to build You own protocol etc.
In reality, Rockwell and all other PLC IDEs supported version control almost from the beginning. One thing that young programmers/developers do not understand is that the PLC IS the master branch. It is the most practical way to do it because users will always make edits to the PLC when there are bugs to fix. When I get to a jobsite, I should always upload from the PLC and compare to my offline. It is the only way that any edits to the working machine are captured. Although I would like there to be more in regards to being able to keep a log of each commit or download with comments on the PLC, there is still version control. Here are some similar features and how they present themselves with Logix or really any other PLC IDE. Making an online edit in Logix5000 you must accept a change in 3 stages. The name of the stages are different but they are effectively git add, commit, and push. Going online with no backup project and uploading ≈ git pull saving a project after going online ≈ get fetch going onlinen with a project already open ≈ get diff
This is when the Rockwell slappies play their lame, over-played card of - "Yeah, but with all that high tech modern stuff that is Beckhoff, the maintenance guy won't be able to support it (deeeeerrrrrppppp)". Give it two seconds and here it comes.........1..............2..........
After watching your videos it's clear you were struggling inside for a long time. I feel your pain. Why can't we just program in machine code. If it was good enough in the past there's no reason it should be replaced. FC 0001 DD 24
Jakob rocks! At the start of the video I was misled and really frustrated 🥴.... The conclusion has made my day ! ☺ Happy Easter time, best wishes to the Host and all friends of this cool channel! 🐣
😮I was about to believe the video until I saw that you celebrate April Fool's Day in April. I am Mexican and we celebrate April Fool's Day in December 🤣🤣
I agree about Git. PLC programming languages are not designed to take advantage of Git. and in TwinCAT world files are XML so no textual diff is possible.
The same situation i had during Embedded C programming or STM32 (ARM Coretex-M3) I didn't wanted to use HAL Libraries, and CMSIS. I did "bare metal C programming", and that was fun. It did what it need to do. Nothing more, nothing less. :)
You forgot the convenience of managing the Ethernet/IP networks with a robust(hardly crashes or hangs, daily), ultra-fast (ready in minutes!) and intuitive (given you've had training) Factorytalk Linx, which only takes a fraction (a convenient 4/4) of the lion's share of the machine's memory, independent of the actual available amount. It has been determined that the only deterministic network one needs is for good ol' boys anyhow.
Hey, everybody! Today is April 1st. In the country where I lived this day is perceived as World Laughter Day. On this day it is customary to say all sorts of "not serious news" on purpose to draw attention to oneself. And if "without irony", I agree with almost all of Jacob's statements, especially with the fact that the people who create software for production are an elite caste of programmers. You can't compare them to the rest of us. The production process is first and foremost a responsibility to the personnel who maintain it. There is no right to make mistakes! At the end of my long comment I would like to thank Jakob for his personal contribution to the popularization of controller programming.
This is shocking. I paused your video in first few seconds.. Now I am curious to know why? Is Rockwell more efficient? Performant? Can I replace my TwinCat projects/sources to Rockwell platform? Is it feasible? How difficult/easy? Lot of questions. I will follow you closely now. Let me finish watching this video :)
Yeah Logix Studio was AUD20k last time I had to purchase it, no idea of the cost now they have or are moving to subscription model. It's not that bug free either, you would think at that price it would be rock solid, but it's never held a candle to something totally solid Unity Pro from Schneider for M340, who you would say could be considered a peer. I like Beckhoff, it is just not that popular in this part of the world, wish it was.
Heh heh. I'm a sarky old git, so I spotted the twinkle of sarcasm in the eyes!!! Only realised the reason at the end! Duh. Very interesting to hear that PLC programming, or at least the approach, hasn't really changed in decades. Opto22 was an great system for non-PLC people. And then later Beckhoff did a similar 'modern' but in the guise of a PLC. Direct competition. Brilliant video, which it seems, still sums up the approach of many in the automation industry 🙂. Charging per tag for UI software... bet that's still a thing too!? 😂
I'd love to work with the Opto22/Epic Groove at some point. Seem them in the field multiple times, they look really neat! And the "per-tag" charging ... yes... it seems still to be a thing! (not with everyone though).
Rockwell has remained the industry standard for clunky box-looking PLCs and circuit breakers, while Beckhoff has increasingly been developing attractive form factors for their products, improving and iterating on their already great UI. Why tf would anyone want anything other than clunky box-looking components?!
Ok the last part had be struggling not to laugh out loud in the airport terminal I'm in. You forgot copy/pasting hundreds of rungs instead of use a loop!!! Loops are the work of satan!! What about backing up your variables in the project, so you can over write all the setpoint thst were changed since the last download? That is a really helpful feature....
Rockwell is catching up! Or at least trying to. I haven't used it yet but the recently release Logix SDK claims to unlock CI/CD, automated testing, and version control. Is it free? Well of course not 😂
Hello, just my experience with Rockwell shows that Rockwell has a very very old fashioned development environment. ST code is very poorly solved and does not follow the full IEC standard. Siemens is much better with SCL... in my opinion the maintenance of the code as well as the software architecture at Rockwell is a mess. I touch Rockwell and will never go back to developing with Rockwell.
OMG Jakob, I did not see the video title till the end of video :D.... You got me after 19 days after :D... I definitely decided to unsubscribe when I saw 02:19 Real PLC-programmer photo :) what the heck is :D:D:D.... Oh waitt!!! What about real Rockwell guys :D:D:D What did they think at beginning and et the end of the video :) ?
It would've been like trading a diamond for a turd. I am glad this is a joke, but still it rings true with many of the typical comments you see when people try to dismiss Beckhoff... I just got back home from the Beckhoff VIP+ tour. Believe me when I say you would be hard pressed to find a competitor that will best Beckhoff in the coming years. When it comes to automation, Hans Beckhoff figured it out. The special missing something that was always needed in automation, the next step; yeah, Beckhoff has it. Good joke though, the moron-meter went haywire.
You forgot to mention that Beckhoff has stock of there stuff. Who would want that. The longer the client can wait the better. Also Beckhoff has customer support. I hate when a company can help me with my problem
Well done Jakob, why deprive yourself of the joy of paying €200 for an SD-card as it is formatted in a special way? Rockwell, as well as Siemens probably give you this joy! 😊
Was really wondering how anyone serious can be so stupid but i thought all people on the internet are nowadays crazy until the last second you revealed what was going on 😂
You're a funny a guy Jakob, reverse psychology, nice try. If I were going to jump on a PLC mfg. I'd go to Siemens. But in the US, Rockwell does have the support and there are maintenance electricians that have no idea how to re-program machines supplied by others or don't want to spend the money on Rockwell software and this is where down time costs money and Rockwell does have the support needed in the US and know this firsthand. I called on an ARCO oil refinery, speaking to an engineer there, I was selling Siemens at the time, he told me if this plant goes down, I can have half a dozen integrators here in a half an hour verses I don't know when with any other processor manufacturer - point taken.
Hi Jakob , i am Siemens specialist and I was trying to relearn some of the Beckhoff again, after all this while I lost it, I had seen some of your videos about Twincat even trying to install the software to practice, then today I found this new shocking video and I kind of agreed with you in all terms, I feel same way as you do so now I do not know what to do, I am used to to program AB long ago, I know its easier than Siemens for me , but need to buy the software, need to think about it...
haha very funny. Jakob I hate to tell you this, but your comedic skill need improvement. I have been running away from Rockwell since 2014 and I still haven't stopped running.
I was still in bed in the morning when i watched this video and i was shocked by it. I was about to call my colleague and tell him that I'm taking over his Rockwell projects after all. Best headlines today, great to the point!
Thanks Martin and hope you're having a great easter!
you just didn't waist a damn minute in April to drop that banger April fool
is twin cat free ??
Finally someone other than me who sees through Rockwell as the cash cow company they are! Priceless!! New subscriber here!
ROFL!!! I was hoping someone would entertain me today and you kind sir did it!!
LOL, this is GREAT!! I am in the process of shifting a system from the AB micro800 to the Beckhoff CX7000. just finished your Beckckhoff Tutorial - which was EXCELLENT!!!. The two things Rockwell does better is graphical programming and online edits. Do you disagree?
When I saw you clickbait I was in shock for a sec and ready to sell my beckhoff hardware... Thank God for April 1. Lol as usual great content. P.S. the way you keep that straight face and posture while stating the obvious... just priceless.

ah right... now I get it.
You got me good 😂

Amazing Jakob, you made my day!

Just watched your video. I was fooled in April 2nd. ☺. Thanks for staying with Beckhoff TwinCAT.
Very funny, thank you Jakob
Jakob rocks! At the start of the video I was misled and really frustrated 🥴.... The conclusion has made my day ! ☺ Happy Easter time, best wishes to the Host and all friends of this cool channel! 🐣
Thanks and have a great day! 😍
Funny, pretty sure neither AB or Siemens are even just a little bit worried about Beckhoff taking their lunch money. It is just not that good yet.
Im a simple man, I saw the title, I clicked :)
😮I was about to believe the video until I saw that you celebrate April Fool's Day in April.
I am Mexican and we celebrate April Fool's Day in December 🤣🤣
Genius video 😂 you really convinced me, only spitting facts!
Downloading everything to make a small change? Oh wait...
I agree about Git. PLC programming languages are not designed to take advantage of Git. and in TwinCAT world files are XML so no textual diff is possible.

I was confused because I saw this video today. But I realized the original publish date at @1:22 :)
I think he nailed it.
Well played Jacob - well played
I'm forced to use Rockwell and you made me sad :(
April Fools' Day 😂😂😂 Very funny Jakob
You forgot the convenience of managing the Ethernet/IP networks with a robust(hardly crashes or hangs, daily), ultra-fast (ready in minutes!) and intuitive (given you've had training) Factorytalk Linx, which only takes a fraction (a convenient 4/4) of the lion's share of the machine's memory, independent of the actual available amount. Good one…
You had me until "First Reason... Cost", up until then I thought that perhaps you got a new job, new contract or something...
CI/CD is still not a trivial task with Twincat.. And still it is way better experience than other PLC manufacturers. Not sure about Codesys though?
You're absolutely right! To get a CI-pipeline running with Beckhoff can be a daunting task.
Let me finish watching this video :)
nice sarcastic jokes 🤣🤣🤣.. I thought you were serious...
Gotcha! 😂
Great video You made my Day Congrats

Yes, I like AB and ControlNet.
Rockwell is better because they have a stronger sounding name and also appear later in the alphabet. Good reasons to select them.
I almost had a heart attack. 🤦🏾♂️😂😂😂
Good one.
Initially I was thinking you’re having a stroke, but then remembered it’s April fools 😅
April Fools day...respect buddy
Haha, good. Happy April 1st. Rockwell...
😂😂😂 Yaaay!!! Got my April Fool's Day!!! 😂😂😂

Rockwell is catching up! Or at least trying to. I haven't used it yet but the recently release Logix SDK claims to unlock CI/CD, automated testing, and version control.

When i see this video i was saying couldnt be but when i see the end it couldnt be anything else 😂😂

I was honestly scared for a moment...until i saw the date
The next step will be switching from Rockwell to Schneider Modicon PLCs and to ControlExpert software. It is much more old school than Rockwell 😜
You had me there for a moment. 🤔🤔
I almost died hahahah, you got me in the first part 👏🏻
Breakpoint will never help people who does not using code as it has to be, like an old electrical cabinet with relay and contactor 😉
OMG Jakob, I did not see the video title till the end of video :D.... You got me after 19 days after :D... You are so uninformed about Rockwell's abilities. But overall you are quite right.
I think it is one of the best April Fool 😆
Straight face award!
Won’t lie, you almost had me there
🐠 good one 😘
Shit, I burned all my Beckhoff stuff and ordered Rockwell, then I noticed the date ...
Genius!
I was expecting rockwell PLC in intro
What a lost opportunity! 🤣
Rexroth firmware is sold as expensive hardware cf cards you can't copy. At least nobody tells how.
Was really wondering how anyone serious can be so stupid but i thought all people on the internet are nowadays crazy until the last second you revealed what was going on 😂
Actually I think at Rockwell they really do talk like this😂😂😂
Hello, we call this in France #Poisson d'avril 😂.
You're a funny a guy Jakob, reverse psychology, nice try. If I were going to jump on a PLC mfg. I'd go to Siemens. Great April Fools joke!
should've said you're switching to Siemens hahaha
Excellent !!🤣
I was fooled in the first 20 seconds 😂
Almost got ripped off.
First April. was fooled the first 30 sec ....
😲🤣
Soooo sad ;((((((😢😢
April Fools' Day 🤣
1min11sec is my score.

rsLogix 5k sucks. visual studio is the only god
😂 👍😂

April Fool
Total April Fool
April fool?!
April Fool?
