    Just came upon your video, Trevor, which caught my eye because I purchased a new RASA-8 last month.
    I very much appreciated your reflection on the ethereal aspects of this hobby, with which I could not agree more.
    PS - I continue to thoroughly enjoy that F132 you helped William Optics to "re-home" a few years back. It has retained pride on place on a CEM60 bolted to one of the piers in my small back yard (with its own heater and dehumidifier, sitting under a big, waterproof tarp and monitored by a wifi temperature and humidity sensor!).

    Another great video Trevor, thank you. I couldn't agree more with what you said about the rewards we enjoy from this hobby. I haven't fully experienced what you've so richly described since completing a backyard observatory (which I highly recommend).
    It's only when out in the elements that we catch those surprise moments too. My most memorable was seeing a fireball slowly streak across the sky directly overhead as it broke up into a dozen or so smaller pieces and disappeared over the western horizon. Who knows what other marvels are missed once tucked away in a warm room!

    I totally love your channel...ive been watching it for over a month now. I heard about the orionid meteors being visible in October, so went outside with my old bridge camera on a tripod..thats when I saw a huge band of cloud going across the sky upwards, so quickly checked out TH-cam and found you explaining manual settings iso etc. Rotated my switch to that never used setting 'M' and played! Oh my God, the milky way (that cloud) looked beautiful. Ive now bought my first telescope at 52 years old, a celestron 6" newtonian....the journey begins!! Keep up this fabulous channel...super cool. Thank you.

    Along with the Edge 8" and Hyperstar, which is basically identical to the RASA system, I have the the Starsense system. This setup means that you only need a rough polar alignment because the Starsense system plate solves in real time, meaning rough polar alignment is done within about 5 minutes. I highly recommend it.

    Wonderful presentation and great production values (nice drone shot eased in there!). Its pretty amazing with the F2 how much time is scavenged compared to higher F-ratio'd scopes. More viewing targets in a night or just a lot more frames to stack - less noise and higher dynamic range if the seeing is good too.

    Thanks for the great video. I have been a star gazer since I was 10 years old. I started in the 80s with a Department store Tasco refractor. So true about the night sky and being out under the stars with your telescope and the feeling of awe and wonder, its hard to describe to people. I am not much of an astrophotographer although I have done a few shots with a 6-inch Newtonian, Pentax K-1000 with kodak TX-400 35mm film. The old days. Now I just star hop, you really get to know the sky.

    Congrats on 55K subscribers!! After watching this, I started looking at a faster telescope (currently using a TMB130 at F/7). While reading some reviews on Cloudy Nights, they were discussing the narrow band filters and how the bandwidth shifts with the faster telescope, and this got me looking at my filters. The manufacturer of my filters indicated that mine are good to F/4, so I sent them an email to see if my filters would even work with a F/3.3 astrograph that I am looking at. My SII and OIII have an 8nm bandwidth and my Ha is 3nm. They told me "The wavelength shift for narrowband filters in an f/3 or faster beam is about 0.7 - 0.9nm, so no adjustment is needed for the 8nm-wide filters. The specific lines of interest will still be transmitted in the mid 90% range." But, the 3nm Ha filter will probably not work with this fast of a telescope, but they do make filters which will work at these faster F stops (same cost as the regular filter, you just have to ask for it). This was new to me and just not something I would have thought about!!

    I love your videos and passion Trevor. I'm building out a beginners astrophotography rig to begin imaging and your journey has given me knowledge to begin. I'm not sure how though you can not have an 8-12" dob to roll out and meander through the sky while you image? I can't think of a better way to fill the long minutes than a direct dose of starlight.

    Fantastic! Congrats on the new RASA. Are you having any challenges with calibration? At F/2 I spend a lot longer processing subs because of the gradients all over. One tip, if you arrange your cables in a semi-circular fashion your stars will look much better. Get someone to 3D print you a cable router, I don't know if the dimensions of the RASA 8 is the same as the Edge 8", if it is I can print you one and take it with me to Cherry Springs.

    If you split your cables into an L shape, like one at the 6 o'clock position and one to the 3 o'clock position you will get a much better diffraction spike layout rather than having them both running together.
    What I do is use some Velcro tie wraps and tie the cables down close to the corrector plate around the base of the secondary and then branch out to your L shape and use some small stick on Velcro to hold them to the side of the scope and route them back.
    The result will be diffraction spikes much like an RC
    Sean

    • @seanmolony-redstickastro238
      @seanmolony-redstickastro238 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can even arc them. That's what a lot of people do. Just split them away from each other and create a semi arc with them and you will like the result much better on your bright stars

    • @cruikshank
      @cruikshank 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sean M Curious, would they have less or more impact on the image if you mounted a support, say a dowel or fiberglass rod on the scope body. Ran it straight out from the scope. Or even used a dew shield. Then support and have the cables drop down further away from the corrector plate. Or are they more out of focus because they are so close.
      Either way I would think you could find & use the thinnest USB cable available, even if just till out of view, then use a larger extension cable. Just thinking about what I’d try if I had one.

  • @AntPDC

    Odd, Celestron says you CAN attach a DSLR to this scope in its YT ad. Doubtless the larger central obstruction lowers the f/ratio to f/3.5 - f/4? Still fast.

    I'm a Celestron C8 user myself about to humbly go to my first GEM, an AVX (for cost and because I want to stay Celestron even though I'm aware of the disadvantages of the AVX compared to the HEQ5 etc. I will pickup an ED80)... while these f/2 RASA's are "amazing" I can't help but wonder that with their added weight vs. much, much smaller and lighter refractors of around the same focal length if they really have significant enough advantages to justify the cost and complications associated with the design? There is no question these RASA's need good (and expensive, heavy) mounts and very expensive cameras to work just by the nature of their design and the resolution at this focal length looks very, very similar to what can be produced with things a fraction of the cost. No visual either. I know we talk about the amazing f/2 aperture but frankly with that CGX-L mount you don't need f/2 nearly as much because if guided you can do very long subs with a RASA sized scope and still keep things round right? Great technology (and ok, the $1600 RASA 8 price isn't as insane as I thought it would be) but I'm still looking forward to better understand what the real advantages of f/2 are to make it worth being able to handle that larger scope.

  • @aether5213
    @aether5213 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Really like that scope. It's a 2.0 f-stop, but a ~2.2 t-stop due to that center obstruction.
    Edit: forgot to square the 46% - credit to @blcs thanks mate!
    Point is I don't think t-stop is paid enough attention in astrophotography when it is more important than f-stop.

    • @2406ab
      @2406ab 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      no it has 93mm obstruction and 203mm aperture that means its equivalent to 180mm aperture. 400/180 is 2.22 so it has a t-stop of 2.22

    • @fto5935

    How did you attach that Polemaster to the ADM camera mount? Looks like a right angle plate of some sort. The camera mount is about twice the price of the polemaster mount adapters but then you have something that can have another purpose. I like that. I know, you do an entire video on the RASA and I'm asking questions about an incidental.

    Awesome video dude. The RASA is great because it lets you get to so many more targets in just one night. I have the 11” and I usually plan on imaging between 3-4 objects a night. At f/6.3 I usually limited myself to one object a night. If you have to travel to get to dark skies this scope is the perfect companion.

    That giant friggin' ferrite core on the power cable situated right in front of the glass, instead of a foot down the cable, is probably the dumbest design choice possible. Those cables should be as thin as possible and sandwiched on top of each other to minimise shadowing.
    Someone intelligent should make a wireless add on that plugs directly on to the rear of the camera unit. Battery pack and wifi/Bluetooth. Shouldn't be to hard to make.

      Agreed. You can get wafer thin cable, but it would be a bit of a ballache to keep it "Side-on" to minimise light loss.
      Having said that. Thor and The Pinwheel seem totally unaffected by the cable

      Doesn’t the Ferrite need to be as close to termination as possible?

    I hope to get one when the next shipment arrives. Try using a baffled dew tube. It makes a difference and if you look at Hubble they have baffles well past the secondary. Less light hitting the corrector plate should make a big difference with that scope. Hope you can make the idea popular☺ I like your videos.

    Hi Trevor! Thats an exiting thing, but I am wondering if one could have more flexibility in focal length by installing a Barlow or a Reducer to the Rasa. Is this possible? Are this parts especially for the rasa available?
    Otherwise - to achieve more magnification - i could use a camera sensor with a higher resolution and then crop the picture, do you agree? Thanks and KR, Sebastian

    I haven't seen a clear sky more than 3x this year. Too many trails that turn into cloud cover. Great shots.

    Hey Trevor, nice Video! You put a lot of effort in this one. But why aren't you using the RASA8 more often? It is such a nice scope with such a big aperture. It looks like you're still prefering the Redcats and other small refrectors. Is there a reason for this? Thanks man!

    This time I was a tick ahead of you Trevor, got mine 2 months ago ;-). Great video about it, and you made it sound easy to get the correct focus distance, it actually is not that if you do not have the correct filter drawer, had to get myself a new one (I chose the Baader UFC). Love your philosophical view on star gazing, and agree with it so much. Have the same setup as you do, nightly setup, adjusting everything from scratch and then go for it. Keep on rolling!!

    I have the Edge 8" with Hyperstar, and it is a great imaging telescope in light polluted skies.

    I'm new to all this, so please excuse the rookie question:
    Is this 8" f/2 better than say a 14" f/8 for deep sky viewing, photography?
    I understand the f/2 lets in way more light, but curious what setup works better for deep sky.
    Awesome videos!

    Did you say you used STC dua narrowband filter? That's exactly what I am looking to buy because it's the only one that has a clip in version for my mirrorless camera (panasonic lumix). Do you not like the filter? I don't remember seeing you use it in any other video after this one.
