The key here is numbers, whose to say the labels didn’t inflate the numbers to begin with and then just stopped. Most artist have 1-3 year run if they are lucky. Times are different and fans attention spans are shorter and what they like changes. With the internet and music being as accessible as it is, there isn’t a big anticipation for music like there once was unless you know the artist is gonna hit you with something you can feel and doesn’t drop that often.
