1590 return yards on 64 picks is 25 yds per pick. That is insane. Also shows how many picks he came up with on throws deep down the field. He’d bait the qb to throw it deep thinking he had single coverage, except Reed had that closing speed and would snatch it at the last moment. Perfect football player.

I don’t know who was better, of the two. I watched FS Ronnie Lott, but never watched CB Ronnie Lott. My dad was a Niners fan. Up until 2011, I don’t think I EVER would entertain the discussion.
I am a Florida State football fan. I became an Ed Reed supporter, after I watched him victimize FSU his last year, in Miami. Later, I found out Ed went to Miami as a running back, and took playing safety to where he did. His special teams play gives him an extra push. It may be recency bias, but I lean toward Ed Reed being the greatest safety, but by a slim margin. And, I was a Brady guy.

Sean Taylor was the best Safety I’ve ever seen play. The man was 2 drops away from picking off Favre 5 times in a single game. His very 1st play of his career was a pick 6. At the single high safety position he was making plays in the backfield. He had the coverage abilities of Reed and hit harder than Dawkins. Coming from a Bills fan, we will never see a safety as talented as Sean Taylor again.

Ed Reeds was still a badass on some really good defenses with the Texans for a few years. Tbh if those teams would've had a top 10 QB, he may have another ring, lol. People may talk shit but go and look back at those late Gary Kubiak as head coach with Wade Phillips as the D Coordinator years and you'll see an all around great team just missing a QB.

    Brian Dawkins - 1147 tackles. 59 TFLs. 26 sacks. 153 PDs. 37 INTs. 36 Forced Fumbles. 19 Fumbles Recovered
PDs and TFLs were not tracked as a statistic his first 3 years in the NFL or would be higher

Thank you! Most Versatile safety ever. Wasn't as good in coverage as ed. But could cover very well. Could blitz and could hit in run support

Grew up watching Lott and Atwater, all-time, but Reed was the greatest FS i’ve ever seen play, Troy 1b. B-Dawk runner up. Taylor sadly didn’t have enough time to shine.

A lot of the Patriots toughest games in those playoff runs were vs the Ravens. Sometimes the real Superbowl is played in the championship round. That was definitely the case a few of those years.

I was always confused as to why we took him off special teams. Not punt returner but he was blocking kicks and punts. He knew how to score and he played defense

You can debate the top SS/FS spot all day. Troy, Ed, Sean Taylor (R.I.E.). Brian Dawkins is my guy. Coaches and QBs were scared of Troy and Ed. PLAYERS were SCARED of Brian Dawkins.. 36 Forced fumbles, 19 Fumble recovers, 37 Ints.
