What they forgot is that you have to play the team that is in front of you. You need to play against SA in a very different way than you play against NZ. England tried to play the same game in the final and were just wrong.
Against the Boks you start with your strongest set piece team, you concentrate on the physical competition you have to stop them before you can beat them. NZ beat the boks by nullifying their pack and then using the fast ball their pack can generate to score as the game goes on.
England tried to do this too early and from a position of pack weakness. I'm English but I was a forward so I love South Africa's approach. If you don't at least match them up front you lose. We lost. Best pack won. That's ok.

It is really interesting to see Youngs pass so quickly off the rucks, in pre-planned moves in controlled situations... whereas after a few phases, he seems to spend ages with the ball available in the ruck, killing-off any momentum... thing is, he can be quite an instinctive player at times with his solo breaks, or when he decided to attack australia from turnover ball on the england try line at twickenham, that led to the end-to-end ashton try.

@@dietersmit6639 honestly, this RWC has just confirmed for me that England are not only bad winners (moaning about a disallowed try that was clearly justified in the semi-final, despite winning) but absolutely horrendous losers.
I mean I knew the English were poor losers last year when they were called offside against the ABs due to an offside law that was introduced due to Eddie frigging Jones complaining to World Rugby previously... but this just sealed it.
...and honestly, I used to think the Irish were the worst. I think there's just a general attitude problem in the British Isles and it probably explains why the NH has only won a single RWC.

Its a bit weird saying that Wales had England’s number: since the previous RWC they had beaten England in one competitive match and one RWC warm up. The warm up saw a largely experimental English team go down to the full Wales team in Cardiff by the margin of a very contested try (and had won the previous warm up match in Twickenham with another experimental team of dirt trackers). Sure the six nations win was well-deserved, but Wales had to come from losing at half time, so hardly a one-sided affair. Farrell and Jones got their tactics wrong and I do wonder if there was an element of keeping their powder dry for the RWC.
So all in all, if Wales had England’s number, they’ve been pretty damn shy about about dialling it (and they forgot to call it again this year)

Mad respect for your rugby knowledge. Just one thing i don't agree with when you said AB's have no reference point of pulling wins out their arse after trail5the whole game. I'm sure if you look into the Rugby Championship/Tri Nations stats you'd find that they've trailed many many matches, and then come back in the last 10 or so minutes to score a couple of tries and win it. That's where they got their reputation of being the wolrd's fittest rugby team, cause they just keep playing when other teams start to fade after 60 minutes.
You're ability to read the game and strategies is top shelf though. Excellent work.

I agree with you but I would also point out that I think it’s also nerves too for the defending team. Think about how many times the all blacks or what ever team would be forced to clear a ball from nearly the exact same spot but England didn’t score off their line outs in the same spot.

Of course professional sides play to a plan.
The real difference here is pressure.
Most sides wait to see what the ABs are going to do. To late. They've done it.
England didn't wait. The defense was relentless. They strangled the ABs.
And of course, Eddie focused on the semi.
    Forgot about the final.
    Well done South Africa

I'm England through and through, for me England playing like this one week and then getting smashed the next week shows why New Zealand have been the best side. England came with an awesome performance but weren't able to back it up the next week. New Zealand can back up a performance like that for a handful of games before they lull and the lull is still too much for most sides except the top five when they're playing well. England played amazing but I was still worried in the last 10 minutes NZL would steal it like they did against Ireland in 2013. As champs the Boks have a chance to show us if they can back that England performance as their new standard of play, that they're not just the best tournament side for a year, they're still pretty young, should be interesting. As for Warren Gatland's comments, they're total nonsense, if England hadn't played like that they would have been playing Wales for the bronze medal, Gatland is just a sour bottom feeder who hates English rugby. England would have needed All Blacks consistency to back up their performance against the Boks and then it still would have been down to the wire because the Boks were ready for war.

The theory about England's kick-offs is interesting, but I wonder whether you've compared it to other teams. My sense is that it's not that uncommon for a team to kick deep, then for the other to kick it back (and into touch). Then using the lineout as a platform is highly unusual. England obviously start well, but that might be a psychological thing rather there being any tactical innovation.

I will tell you , are England day in day out a better team? No , Eddie gave stale old Hansen a Masterclass in tactics, he studied the all blacks and knew exactly how to beat them on the day . Unfortunately for Eddie and England they were to focused on beating NZ and forgot they had a World Cup to win and came crashing back to reality in the final . I don’t think they cared what happened as long as they got one up on the all blacks .

If New Zealand had altered their offensive ruck play after the 3rd time England pushed them off the ball and commited more than one person to the ruck they would probably have cleaned up because England put so much stock into turnover ball that they left holes around the edges. Because NZ didn't adapt they couldn't get the ball back to run it through the gaps.

I think you were making this video more about Wales than England themselves. Very annoying IMO. Wales are going to be more likely to understand Englands' game as they play them more often . But its 2 games each that the sides have won in the last 4 games ( that last game decided on an English team caught napping). I don't feel as if Wales have the template for beating England' as if they had they would be dominant.
England scored one try , one fairly disallowed for blocking and another because of some suspect decision at what happened at the back of a maul to set up Ben Youngs. I also feel that you denied the brilliance of Maro Itoje. I do not feel England are an arrogant team either and it seems you make speculative comments rather than watching what the players and coach say about the opposition they are about to face. Very Welsh in bias as I suspect this would be

How is it annoying when you can't simply analyse a single game in isolation from the rest of a team's games leading up to it? You're right - it's not like the ABs face England annually, unlike SA who faced England four times last year and knew exactly what to expect. Ahhhhh and no team has a set 'template' for beating another team in tier 1 Rugby - you're implying that England wouldn't have the chance to adapt to Wales' game.
Imagine still moaning about the second disallowed try, which was blatantly a knock-on - and one would expect to be analysed and picked up on in the finals of a RWC.
I like how you mentioned Itoje in one breath then claimed England aren't arrogant in the other. Did you see him receiving his medal? Honestly sums up their attitude, but frankly I can't blame them since they were hoping to win you Northern Hemisphereans your second Webb Ellis - but failed spectacularly.

7 mins of this video focuses on 1 missed tackle by mo'unga. Lots of teams score early against the All Blacks. It's not why England won. All other points by England came from NZ playing out of their 22m. Squidge has kind of said that and good point about NZ game plan fitting SA rather, but really NZ f*cked this up. Finals rugby is finals rugby. NZ ran 600m this game, twice as many as Eng, but Aus had already shown, that game plan doesn't win.

England were very good on the day and we were very poor. Well done England.
We had the same against Ireland. We clicked. They didn’t.
However, didn’t last long for England though, did it.
BTW. ABs record against England... played 42, won 33, drew 1, lost 8.
Perhaps England will start to whittle away the ABs 78% winning ratio ?
    Let’s see.
