Don’t take lack of views as evidence viewers don’t love the video. The algorithm is so frustrating. I’ve had to go searching to find videos from channels I subscribe to because they don’t show up in my feed. I can’t be alone on this. I’ve seen some amazing videos with less views and I’m shocked. But I really think sometimes the algorithm is wonky.
A chair doesn’t make much sense if you’re a high speed thru hiker, and you just hike, eat, sleep, resume hiking… if you’re casual backpacking and want to sit around enjoy your camp… oh yeah, a chair makes a lot of sense
I have scoliosis in my lower back and sitting on the ground for any period of time is painful. I reluctantly took a chair on a backpacking trip once and realized that it was worth it, because the next day I was able to get up and hike out without pain. I don’t know if I’d take it on long trips where I’d just be hiking or sleeping, but a trip where I might be sitting and talking I would find it worth it. As a younger person I know I would have scoffed at bringing a chair. As a 47 year old I had to grudgingly admit that the extra pound was worth being able to stand up straight the next morning. If I went with Kyle’s opinion that once I need a chair I’m going to stop hiking I would miss out on some good fun. I mean I don’t NEED it, but it extends the number of days I can comfortably hike.
I enjoy both of yall and it's great to see the conversation. Different enough vibes and content to where I can watch both and find different information and angles on a similar subject.
@NathanHassall I've been following Steven for years and I catch all of his interviews when he goes onto these podcasts. You have to understand that the business man hat is how he makes his living here, so I don't knock him for that. He will talk up a new product while putting it to the test and always comes back around with budget options to help the little guy. Can't say that about alot of these other guys out here.
For Steven's video idea, I bet he could reach out to Destin from Smarter Every Day and get it done. Destin's got the curiosity, slow motion equipment, and private property to match. Edit: Destin, not Dustin
If something is wet its physically impossible for it to also be "breathable." If anything gets wet it becomes airtight. You can wet denim pants and use them as an inflatable in emergency situations.

Another excellent episode! As a sound engineer, Steven's 'silence' video resonated with me in particular, and I love how it's impacted other people too. An interesting conversation all-round, though, thank you! Keep up the great work both of you (and Levi and Luke too!)
Backpack with a chair but don't film it. If you like it, then that'll be a video with high views and "sell out" comments. If you dislike it, no one will ever know you took a chair.
I am not a thru-hiker. I am only a section hiker when time allows it. I have tried to be as ultralight as possible, but every time I see someone with a chair, I long to sit in it. So I purchased a zero and can’t wait to use it while I have lunch and when I set up camp in the evening.
I love Steven's videos. His idea for the overfilling canisters might be a perfect fit for a collaboration with @demolitionranch Matt has a safe range that could "disable" the tank for safety if needed, and he has seen a thing or two exactly like this (scuba tanks/fire extinguisher/etc).
Camp chair thing is kinda weird to me too. I don't want to sit usually. I would rather have a Tyvek ground sheet and just lay on it to stretch my back and legs out. It's interesting. A ton of people wouldn't carry a groundsheet or footprint but would carry a chair, which is usually heavier and not multi-purpose. I would rather have a place to lay on and dry barrier than a heavier thing to sit on.
Quiet chambers are so awesome, I did a co-op for a company that had one for testing and sometimes I would go in there to escape all the noises and clear my head on my projects. A few times it was to observe the testing (then it wasn't so quiet).
Kyle - could you try and get Luke from the outdoors boys on here. I'd love to see that conversation as well. He doesn't have comments enabled so it'd be cool if you could maybe put a poll out for popular questions to ask him if you ever have him on.. This was an awesome video man! I love that you've created a dedicated space on TH-cam for conversations like these. My life outdoors is one of my favorite channels on TH-cam. The second he mentioned Mythbusters I saw the connection and it's great to have meaningful data on the gear we're using.
My brother, the people will come! I can only speak from my experience, but while starting the sport I found Miranda goes outside by looking for gear/loading video which brought me to the gear you gave her which down my line made me curious of forensics on trail which brought me to you - you got an awesome down the line find and I’ve been hooked on your vids for weeks💯
Honestly, it sometimes is worth it to buy expensive gear right away. I spent, probably, more money on cheaper gear trying to find a good sleep in the woods below -20C before eventually ending up with TNF Inferno (-29C) sleeping bag and Thermarest Xtherm mat. There is often a reason for a gear to be that expensive, and the reason commonly isn't the brand name only.
It’s hard to figure out which expensive thing I want until I have tried some things and learned what I like and don’t. I wouldn’t want to splurge for an expensive quilt or hammock to then figure out I just don’t like it. I know there are ways to try things out without spending money, but gear rentals or borrowing from someone isn’t always available. Still, once I’ve decided I like something I agree that it’s better to just spend the money up front. Hands down.
Klymit sleeping pads are not great, but I have the camp chair, packable daypack, inflatable seat cushion (which doubles as a backpack cushion.) I love all of them.
Klymit are great if they would be promoted by Klymit as summer ones (which they are), not as winter ones (when speaking about insulated series). They are super cozy, unless it's below freezing.
Klymit might not be the warmest, but they're in my top 2 most comfortable pads as a side sleeper. I even prefer them over those super thick self-inflating pads used for car camping.
The problem with Klymit is that they misled people by saying their mats have r-value of 4.4 (suitable for winter) when it actually isn't warmer than a much lighter foam pad. It's simply unprofessional and dangerous. Some time ago, lots of people recommended their mats as one of the best for hiking, now they're not. And this is well deserved. I'm saying this as an Insulated Static V owner. It's not just "not the warmest", it's simply shouldn't be used in below freezing temperatures. And the whole idea that sleeping bag will expand in those gaps is, honestly, ridiculous. I once slept on this pad on the icy ground with an additional 1cm thick foam pad underneath it at -13C. I felt chilly the whole night, despite I had quite a few extra clothing on me. At morning, that ice melted under the mat. With Thermarest Xtherm, I slept in the same sleeping bag at -15C in my underpants only, and I had to open sleeping bag zipper a bit as it was simply hot inside. Klymit Static V, insulated or not, are summer sleeping mats and they should be promoted as such only.
@thisbeem2714 they just made it up based on their assumption that sleeping bag feeling those gaps adds huge r-value. But it doesn't actually fill it in real life situation and it also depends a lot on a certain sleeping bag (some of the professional ones have less insulation on the back to save weight, not even speaking about quilts). The conventional ASTM tests gives insulated version r-value dropping from 4.4 to 1.9 is (which is similar to Thermarest Ridge Rest closed cell foam sleeping pad) and regular version from 1.5 to 1.3 (which is similar to a cheap 8 mm closed cell foam sleeping pad). On their official websites they still promote their made-up r-values and on their products they promote their made-up r-values followed by ASTM ones. Anything below 2 is considered summer, 3-season has to be at least 2 and winter - at least 4. So, they promote purely summer sleeping pads as well suitable for winter. This is nothing but scam. And a very dangerous one. Not sure why outdoor community didn't boycott their products yet. Myself, I paid for this misleading information with with 2 weeks of bronchitis. I was blaming my custom-made sleeping bag for this, until I got myself a legit winter mat.
@gman963 okay, I'll take your pass and will play this "I'm smart" game as well. Exposing your body to low temperatures severely limits its ability to withstand viruses. This is why flu, which is a viral infection, is often referred to as "getting a cold". It's also why exposing your lungs to cold temperatures often leads to pneumonia. There are numerous studies out there, for example, the "Exposure to cold and respiratory tract infections" article states: "Although not all studies agree, most of the available evidence from laboratory and clinical studies suggests that inhaled cold air, cooling of the body surface and cold stress induced by lowering the core body temperature cause pathophysiological responses such as vasoconstriction in the respiratory tract mucosa and suppression of immune responses, which are responsible for increased susceptibility to infections." Now, back to the original topic - Klymit is scamming people and exposing them to dangerous situations like getting hypothermia while being far away from people and hospitals. And yes, they were the reason of me catching that bronchitis.

Freaking awesome!
Unpopular opinion: I absolutely hate his videos
Is it because you are literally watching a commercial every time? That is how I feel.....
Fan of both of you, but youtuber inside talk is pretty damn boring. Just my opinion, do what's fun for you. I get why you 2 would want to talk about that stuff. Personally had fun with the 2nd half of the video.
I'm with you Kyle!!! No chair!!!
Trail tails A Kyle. Get your a$& out there and show some effort!
Super disappointed in this video. Your title totally misleading :-(

so basically what this video showed is these guys opinions are shit lol dont listen to youtubers at all
You guys don't seem to know much.
Dear sweet Kyle. Uniqueness is binary. Things are either unique (one of a kind) or not unique. They cannot be very unique, so unique, extremely unique. It's not a spectrum. There aren't shades. I think you misuse that word at least one time every episode.
I suppose enough people think of uniqueness on a spectrum that the misuse doesn’t matter anymore. People use it as a synonym of rare.
There's already a kind of Mythbusters for backpacking. @gearskeptic
Totally agree, it is very underrated channel
I just bought a chair zero for my backpacking in Grayson Highlands over the past day … it was so nice to just have a chair
