Great video, I appreciate the fact that you actually provide your real opinion and perspective without descending into the Clarkson caricature. You have real opinions which you are not afraid to share but you also provide reasons and rationale for them. Amusing to watch you provide your opinions with the car owner next to you.
The beauty of a 90° V configuration is perfect primary balance, whether it be a twin, 4, 6, 8 cylinder, whatever. However, each bank of a V6 (and V12) is also implicitly well balanced, unlike a V4 or V8. The main reason for differing V angles (i.e. other than 90°) is packaging. A 60° engine can be made more compact and 120° has been used for racing in order to obtain as low a profile as possible. But there is no mechanical advantage to using a V angle other than 90°. So there's nothing wrong with the 90° V of the F-Type's engine.
@@brois841 Just looked again at the beginning of this video and Jay is talking nonsense about the V angle. Also, no-one and I mean NO-ONE makes a V6 by cutting 2 cylinders off a V8. They may design a V6 using the same cylinder dimensions, cams etc but why not. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it. Too many reviewers are fixated on 'new' and denigrate anything that appears similar to an older product. This is just stupid. Use the correct design for the job and if that's the same as you used last time in a different product (engine), what's the problem with that. If Jay thinks that the V6 crank is simply a shortened V8 crank, I suggest he needs to learn more about engine design.
To restore even firing intervals in a 90 deg block, the common big end journals are off-set by 30 deg, to simulate a 60 deg vee for the six. 90 deg in a V8 has even firing intervals and excellent balance with a cross-plane crank.
I've never heard any other reviewer describe a V6 F type as sounding "Quite nice", or describe the looks as anything other than stunning. Nobody who owns an F type cares how much it weighs. Comparing a Lotus to an F type in any meaningful way is odd to say the least (I've owned both).
A 2nd hand V6 model is quite considerable. It still sounds great and it's actually a better "sports car" than the heavier V8 which has handling issues.
I think you we're determined to dislike this car before you'd even sat in the driver's seat. I hope this is an old upload because I like your content especially the xfr & panemera content. My neighbour had a few lotus's 2 x elises + an evora (used to track at Oulton park) & loved the elises but bought a golf after the evora just to have something that he could rely on 🤭 I've had S3's/XJR's & Msport BMW's & the F type is easily the best car for the money bar none... love your channel & keep up the good work 👏
For those curious, here is a site with some great pictures of the Jaguar V6 engine. You can clearly see what I was talking about as the engine is very much V8 size but with an odd V6 head on it. www.pacificmotors.com/auto-parts-shop/jaguar/jaguar-f-type-x152-2014/3-0l-supercharged-v6-aj126-engine-short-block-assembly-jaguar-f-type-2016-2/
I’ve had a xkrs and db9s and now own a f type and imo my f type coupe is a fantastic and fun car in the real world. Yes it not the most powerful car the Aston kept braking down and very rarely could I use the full power of the xk so I’m very very happy with my f type😊
I agree on the issue of power. I have a bog standard XK and its 5.0l engine is way powerful enough. Lord knows why anyone would want the 'R' let alone the 'RS'....
Really loved this review. As always really enjoyed what you had to say. I get the impression you sometimes say what others might hold back on. Great job!
An F-Type Coupe was one of the cars I tried before buying the Evora. I really liked it, but it felt more like an old fashioned muscle car than a proper drivers car. Having previously owned a TVR, I felt I'd already ticked that box. The noise was great, but I think the falseness would have grated after a while.
This is why I think the V6 version is the best out of the lot of them for sound and feel. Feels more like an old British sports car with a 6 instead of a fancy muscle car
I bought an F-Type V6 but traded it for a V8. The V8 tunes to 700HP for $1500, making it absolutely unbeatable by any car under $5 billion dollars. The RWD V8 is lighter than the AWD V6. There is really no reason for AWD in the V6. So I agree the F-Type V6 doesn’t cut it. The V8 is the all around best car ever made. Ever.
Great reviews, James and Tom. I’m a bit biased, as an Evora 400 owner, but the two reviews rang so true. One issue that didn’t come up is interior space. I’m 6’5” and fit easily in the Evora (I actually have the seat a little forward of its most rearward position) and I felt claustrophobic in the Jag. I don’t think the Lotus is quite as usable day to day as the Jag but there isn’t much in it and the Lotus gives so much as a driving machine and as a spectacle for bystanders.
I just bought a 2016 V6 S manual transmission coupe, will get it in a couple of weeks, it's getting shipped across the US. Manual transmission cars are very hard to find. It will share the garage with a 2016 Miata.
Only just found your channel, really enjoying it so far! As someone planning on getting his first 'sports car' in the next year or so... These vids are great! Thanks!
If you buy the jag. Get the R v-8. Otherwise many other great rides with v-6 that will dust it. Like Porsche or his lotus. Jag is Grand Tour car honestly anyway. Personally like the older xk model as you stated Jay.
One of the most famous V8s with 2 cyclinders removed was the Chevy Small block became the 3800 and with a turbo is still famous AKA Buick Gran National, GMC Typhoon and Syclone, still winning at the drag track all over the US.
basically you hated the jag from the start, however i bet you regret saying that know, the jag has class and poise, sound track to die for with looks to match.
Jay your thoughts echo some of mine on the F-Type. I think it's a beautiful car and makes a great noise but a sports car (at least by my way of thinking) it is not. I got the chance to test drive a 2017 F-Type R convertible a month or so back and I felt very insulated from the road and from what the car was doing around me. It's a GT / muscle car if its anything and even though I still cast longing glances at them I don't think I would actually own one.
V6S Coupe manual test would be good see Jay. F-Types are heavy but also massively wide as clearly limited by the platform, hopefully Jag will evolve it like Porsche does with the 911 and get better. Great looking cars though.
*Love our TH-cam incest family LOL!Great video mate! I learn so much from your videos, so much info! I just hoon cars and decide if I like them based on how they feel haha! Great seeing you yesterday, shame we didn’t have too long a catch up but will get a good catch up on Tuesday!*
You do know the F-Type doesn't cost the same as a Aston, you can spec it in other colours, and its a GT/sports car, not a track car. Jaguar were not thinking lightweight sports car (Lotus) when designing.
Except most of Jaguar's literature bangs on about how light and agile it is. A second hand Vantage can be had for similar money, and is frequently discussed as being an alternative to a used (but newer) Jag
I have no rattles or build quality issues with mine. Drove to Monaco and back with 0 issues. I chose the f type over other cars in its bracket because imo it was the most exotic looking car which was affordable to run and insure at my age. I could have bought something like an M4 or M2 but too boring and bland in terms of appearance. There's nothing for the money that looks as exotic imo.
A bmw m4 and m2 Bland? in whot way because m2 has wide arches and aggressive front and m4 is just evil looking at front and most would say the best looking coupe out there today And id say lot more heavy on the fuel than a m2 m4 with that 3ltr v6 supercharged engine
jonny jones I averaged 35mpg to Monaco which is pretty good for a supercharged v6. If you show a non car person an M4 or M2 it looks like any other BMW. It's samey. You look at an f type and you know what it is. With an m car it's like is that actually an M4 or is it an m body kit spec car or has he made a replica etc. There is no replicating an f type. I did test drive the M4 and I didn't like the interior. I don't like the M2 either I personally feel it looks cheaper inside and out for the price compared to an f type. I don't know of anyone who's said you should have got an M4 it's better looking since buying my f type. that's including my friends who love BMWs and own a couple of e92 m3s m140i and an e46 csl. They agreed with my choice.
Whilst i agree land rover is quite unreliable, jaguar in recent years has improved its reliability by quite a bit, have seen jaguar topping brands like bmw in reliability before
The F type car is beautiful, which would benefit from being 200 kg lighter. The 4 pot is nearly there as a ore affordable sports car but could have 10% more power, 10% less weight, 10% cheaper and be stripped of so much gear.
U seriously need to check out a newer review with a decent reviewer. This guy even years ago is complaining about it being a couple of hundred kilos more than a LOTUS which r ultralight cars & carpet is even an option & how can he moan about tyre size as it has one of the smallest in its class n he keeps going on about weight with two huge blokes in at & driving the bottom of class V6 n nope I don’t think you would just cut off pistons to make a 90% camber. Although the F Type starts at 47k.
I feel like comparing an Evora to an F-type is quite daft, the jag is a big comfy cruiser with a beautiful soundtrack, the lotus is a stripped out baby track toy, even though they both have a V6 supercharged engine doesn’t mean they can be compared with each other
The pair make a perfect garage. It's a GT vs a hyper sports car. One for the week (hard top tho) and one for the weekend. LOL, written the above before watching.
Really enjoying the breadth of your knowledge - you clearly research in depth. I’m currently going through your back catalogue and making myself late for work 😁
commenting on you're disconnect between marketing and the engineering on the jag I think its deliberate and shows a disconnect in between what the average customer thinks they want and what they actually want to buy.
A Budget F type convertible . When a well spec’ed V8 550 BHP coupes are out there at really good value and they are a totally different animal. Insanely powerful and stunningly as a coupe. Poor Tom. You should have done your drive first, as he was way too kind to the lovely but floored Avora. When he was sneezing, he should have said “I can’t get the smell of glue and glass fibre out of my nose” ! In reality the paired down lotus and the cruiser spec Jag are aimed at totally different markets.
Don't worry Tom, I'm a huge fan of the F-Type, it looks and sounds fantastic too! It's interesting to hear J talk about engineering compromise when the Evora sports an engine and gearbox from another manufacturer. A gearbox which I believe is a well known compromise. Also, look at the price tag, $70k for the Jag and $90k for the Lotus here in CA. I also think the audience is very different which is why Tom has never driven a Lotus.
The point I'm making is that (nearly) ALL cars are an engineering compromise. The manufacturer knows who they want to sell a vehicle to and they engineer it to the price point for that customer. Saying the V6 is not cool compared to the V8 is not really helpful to most people. The V8 is at least $35k, and as much as $55k more on the BASE price. By the time I've optioned it and paid tax I'm looking at double the price. Not many people have that kind of budget flexibility. AND, when you really think about it, driving straight roads with traffic lights at every intersection does it make a huge amount of difference in everyday driving? Of course the Jag had Ford switch gear, they were owned by Ford at one point. Astons of the same era also had Ford switch gear. My Lotus has a bunch of Vauxhall switchgear and an Isuzu engine as both were owned by GM at the time. I'm a huge Lotus fan and I love the Lotus content, your delivery is great (constructive criticism), but I think you need to differentiate which cars should and should not be viewed through the Lotus lens. There has never been a cross-over between these ownership groups so why force it? Of course the cars feel different, one is a lightweight mid-engined pocket rocket, the other a heavy-weight boulevard cruiser. I'm starting a drinking game - take a chug every time you hear the phrase 'in the Evora'.
Andrew I appreciate your viewpoint. One thing to remember is mine will always be UK centric. Over here, a Corvette starts at $100,000. There is one dealer. They sell ONE car a month! I can buy a used V8 F Type for less than a used Evora 400. I suspect they are way cheaper here than in the USA. I also live surrounded by straight roads, and obviously that impacts my viewpoint too. I think the comparison with the Lotus is quite valid. Both V6. Both near 400hp. Both British. Both around 70k with pricier options available. Both make a good noise. I do try my best to keep comparisons relevant! Eg my hatchback videos. Thanks for your continued viewership, i do appreciate it.
JayEmm on Cars JayEmm on Cars Saying the f type v6 isn't cool is a bit daft to the majority of people who praise and love the car. Comparing the f type to an evora is also pretty pointless. I found this to be one of your oddest reviews and contradictory. I see what you are saying that people want to see what an evora is like compared to other cars but it's apples and oranges. There are more than enough reasons why the f type is so much more popular than an evora.
I understand you're uk centric - but I expect the v6 and v8 to be roughly the same cost ratios in quids or $$. The point being few people will shop for the V6 and be sold up to the V8 - even though the V8 may be the 'better' car. On paper I think the Lotus and Jag look much much closer than they do in real life. The fact you have a Lotus but never looked at the Jag, and Tom has a Jag but has never driven a Lotus says everything about the real world. It may have been interesting to explore why this is in the video. The Evora is in very limited supply here on the resale market so values are up with new models, clearly there are more f-types but if you're looking for a 2017 V8 you're going to pay around $90K plus tax - very comparable to the Evora. Different horses for different courses!
My "Base" level 2012 Jag XK 5.0 V8 had a better standard spec. Thing I HATED about it and why I sold it was the seats were some of the worst I have ever encountered.
now when i see how clever was lotus that pit a toyota engine and gearbox..i was thinking but the one has toyota engine in it..thats how a car wins comparisions..reliability is the first thing all other are for wallpapers if they cant take care me
Jay, have a look at the Jag website, you can spec the interior, in as many colours as your wife has shoes! The Jag is a gentlemans sports car, a very different animal to the Lotus philosophy.
that all sounded very grudging....any compliment you tried to deliver you snatched half of it back....a little Clarkson esque...but it was two years ago and i think i'm judging you by the standard you set now...
Omg I 100% agree about the XK looking better, the headlights are so awkard to me on the F-Type. The XK (facelift) also looked much more like an updated E-type to me. I feel so validated right now.
In my opinion the original XK (96-06) has styling which is evocative of the E-type whilst carrying on Jaguar's lineage from the E-type to the mid nineties. The newer aluminium body XK just looks like a very nice car, but the interior is mostly black and outside styling isn't quite as timeless.
Definitely the xkrs is a better looking more 007 car than the F type which weirdly I don't give a second glance at when I see one....just doesn't stir me at all. I could pull up outside the casino in monte carlo no problem in the xkrs in fact any xk...but the F Type. ...I might as well be in an XF and I don't know why....

I have done my best in recent times to not make things too Lotus focused, although this review called for it. I have been asked many times how the Evora compares to an F-Type. People have come to my channel for Evora stuff so that's generally what they use as a benchmark.
Review the Jag and at the end do a 'So, for those of you who've asked in the past, let me compare this to my Evora...' hearing it all the way through is getting tedious..
this "Review" finally shows the real "level" of your channel: Only your own cars are kind of perfect (until you will face their problems...) Other cars , like this FType are only "ok" . And : it seems that you didn't realise that the FType convertible is in fact not comparable with an Evora, they are completely different cars. Ok, not completely- both are on 4 wheels ...
@@JayEmmOnCars what does it matter when the video was filmed? The video is finally all about criticizing the FType. Even bevor driving you started to criticize the technology and what Jaguar has done wrong on that car. If I would have been the owner of the Jag, your trip would have ended before it's start.
It matters because my technique, opinions, etc... have changed. It's all about context. Also I still stand by a lot of what I said about the car back then, and its owner agreed with me. He wasnt blind to the car's faults
I always find your Jag videos a bit strange. You must be the only Jag fan who doesn't seem to like Jags very much. I've never, ever heard anybody anywhere say they don't like the interior, or the back end, or any other part of the car for that matter.
I agree with Jay's review. And in my opinion (all due respect to the owner and other F-type fans, my 2004 XK8 is better in every way. The engine sounds divine. The looks, well what can I say. The ride/handling balance makes it feel like the car was set up by very serious engineers. It has basically every option the F-type in this video has. The only options it doesn't have which were available at the time are radar guided cruise control and computer controlled dampers. In terms of tech, let those two options (which admittedly mine doesn't have) sink in, those were available in the year 2000! I know Jay has said he wasn't a huge fan of the original XK8, but I have a suspicion (and this is the biggest downside to the car) that the one he drove probably had knackered suspension. They just eat through rubber bushes, and there are many of them. A fully refreshed and sorted XK8 drives so differently one with worn out suspension that you would honestly swear they were two completely different cars. It's also extremely sensitive to tyres, I mean like you would think you were driving two different cars just from the tyres being worn out. But I still maintain, it's better than the F-type in every single way. Sound, looks, fuel economy, running costs, and honestly it's just a real Jag. In my opinion it's a real shame the way Jag have gone. I have to struggle to recognise any qualities in the F-type that originally attracted me to the XK8. The problems all started when they switched to aluminium designs in 2006, they abandoned all their heritage.
logan86123 I love the f type with all respect I disagree with you .the f type looks so gorgeous, they hired the same guy that designed the Aston Martin to make the f type .my opinion this is the best jaguar ever made and they stuck to their roots with that same similar styling from the 70s drives amazing sounds amazing.i just brought mine two weeks ago i have no regrets
Every time I think about the F-Type it annoys me. Why is it so bloody heavy, there are other things but It's just a rubbish drivers car despite looking so good. It is an opportunity missed imo. The V8 is absolutely delightful but I still wouldn't have one. They should have split it into two models, one for touring and one for driving.
Great review but if I may offer your channel another title 😉 l.l.cool Jay 😂 aka lotus lover Jay I kinda thought 💭 the Jag is aimed at the S4 cabriolet and TT crews and at that market it would be my own preference. I think you’re evora is aimed for a different animal eg if you were to do a head to head with a Cayman R or similar that would be a Tony Bellew vs David Haye rematch 👌🏽 I have just been over to see Marco on your recommendation but there wasn’t anyone there🤷🏽♂️ has he moved from Manton lane or have I just been unlucky? The guy at Tesco said he was moving premises I just wondered if you would know 🤷🏽♂️👍🏽
Well said crooky1811. I have just spent a few months researching my next car, and reached the conclusion the XK is the best car for me out there. I have admittedly only had it a month but having put over 2,000 miles on it am pleased to report back I am dead certain I made the correct choice. Better still, they are now incredibly affordable...
Comparing it to an Evora is a bit unfair, their totally different animals. The Evora is a low, lightweight track slag, a poor mans Porsche GT3, and very good too., the F Type is more a Grand Tourer Coupe, meant more for spirited country roads and longer trips.
I simply cannot imagine why JLR wouldn't let you have one to road test. Was it really that difficult to find anything positive to say about it without letting your obvious prejudice get in the way? And no you're not an engineer.
I think I said quite a few nice things about the car. And Jag were fairly simple with their reasoning for not letting me have one - channel isnt big enough
I’ve never once looked to see what mpg I get with my F-Type. Same with my C63 AMG. I do ironically look at what my truck gets but maybe because the screen shows so much info. I think I just can’t be bothered to look, I just don’t care. I’m not wealthy, I think it more has to do with the experience. It would be like getting with the hottest women you’ve thought of and stopping to ask mid session if she’d like to go slower. She says she’d loving the pace and you do too but you’re thinking of slowing it down. Sure, slow can be fun but you’re taking an emotional experience and being analytical. If that’s you then keep looking for another toy because this ones not doing it for you.
JayEmm on Cars do you think z4 handles little worse because of those crashy runflats? I replaced those with Michelin p4s and it's a major improvement. BTW I'm talking 35is specifically
"Yeah, the Jaguar... I don't hate it!" High praise, indeed. But not too surprising for a guy who was a diehard Lotus enthusiast and Evora owner, at the time of recording. As an older enthusiast, it is just astonishing that a 380 hp / 380 lb-ft, supercharged Jaguar elicits a 'meh' response from anyone. But that's the time we live in. The Jag, like so many others, is just not that special because there are so many incredibly well-developed cars to choose from. Unfortunately, most have been forced to converge into nearly interchangeable technical packages. In comparisons, hairs are routinely split in attempting to choose among them: 'Well, this car's navigation screen is sooo much better...' I like cars whose character makes me look for excuses to take them out and enjoy them, which has absolutely nothing to do, really, with the numbers. In this case, I'd say the Lotus is far more likely to evoke that response. It's more focused, more visceral, more exciting, with more sporting purity. The Jag is for your wife who doesn't really care about cars. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
You think an ftype looks like ANYTHING else? and the sedans look NOTHING like the german cookie-cutter models. They ARE different in that they are all gorgeous, something you cant say about almost any audis, a lot of BMWs and some mercedes.
Hi Jay, normally I enjoy your reviews but unfortunately not this one. You've taken one car from a luxury car maker and pitted it against another car from a rare breed specialist sports car manufacturer and surprise surprise the Jaguar is heavier and less dynamic. Bit of a silly comparison in my view.
You'd be amazed how many people were asking for the comparison - and have a look at the other comments, surprising so many people don't appreciate the fact the Jag is also less comfortable and less practical
Wow!..... “You don’t hate it!” Big praise. It seems you are at odds with virtually the entire motoring press but that doesn’t mean you’re not entitled to your opinion. It does strike me somewhat odd that the overwhelming majority of the most esteemed motoring journalists on the planet herald this vehicle as one of the most important and accomplished vehicles in the past decade and the best you have to say about it is “I don’t hate it”. A bit harsh but like I said you are most certainly entitled to your opinion. That said it would have been good if you could have driven it in the way it was intended. Ie, not on wet narrow country roads with the owner sitting next to you.
From a purely objective viewpoint, I can't say I like either of these cars. Six cylinder engines should be straight, not bent like these two buggers. V6's don't respond well to naturally aspirated tuning, but all the junk they carry, to stop themselves shaking apart, means turbocharging isn't possible, so parasitic supercharging is the only option. Both cars are built from the parts bin. This starts with their engines, and carries on from there. With regards to the video, Cletus, I feel if Tom and yourself did a third video where you discussed your likes and dislikes and differences of opinion, that would be very interesting. Needless to say, the shirt is awesome‼️👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Yes, but the turbo V6's are awful. Manufacturers are hoping F1 can sort-out the problems by developing their 1.6 litre four-stroke turbocharged 90 degree V6 engines. The V6 is shorter then the straight 6 and, therefore, easier to package. I don't know if we'll ever see the F1 developed V6's because of the big move to electric cars.
Good car knowledge and useful review however not sure why this was compared to an Evora as very different cars. The heavy Jag brings the looks, drama, noise, and road presence, and the Evora brings the drive-ability with that stripped out ‘kit car’ look (albeit you lose some dignity getting in and out). If used as a GT, I know which one I’d prefer to spend over an hour in! Sorry for whatever Jaguar did to you in the past 😉
think it would have bean better to put it against the f-type coupe mate as the soft top is heavier and roles moreyour car will be better track car and morning blast car for sure mate"" but cannot tell me the interior is pants when you drive a go cart lol and still looks bang on the f-type
The Coupe is actually not that much different weight wise, in terms of price the V8 would have also been a fairer comparison but alas we make do with what we have
Great video, I appreciate the fact that you actually provide your real opinion and perspective without descending into the Clarkson caricature. You have real opinions which you are not afraid to share but you also provide reasons and rationale for them.
Amusing to watch you provide your opinions with the car owner next to you.
I am always honest, and won't shy away just because I want to please an owner!
Thanks for supporting the channel
I love the original F-type headlights, the new ones look so weird
The beauty of a 90° V configuration is perfect primary balance, whether it be a twin, 4, 6, 8 cylinder, whatever. However, each bank of a V6 (and V12) is also implicitly well balanced, unlike a V4 or V8. The main reason for differing V angles (i.e. other than 90°) is packaging. A 60° engine can be made more compact and 120° has been used for racing in order to obtain as low a profile as possible. But there is no mechanical advantage to using a V angle other than 90°.
So there's nothing wrong with the 90° V of the F-Type's engine.
Underrated comment. The external angle mostly matters for packaging. The crank will determine the firing, tuning, etc.
@@UKenGB which is why I said underrated comment ;)
If that was true that they just simply cut 2 cylinders off it would be a 3750 cc engine not a 3.0 litre
To restore even firing intervals in a 90 deg block, the common big end journals are off-set by 30 deg, to simulate a 60 deg vee for the six. 90 deg in a V8 has even firing intervals and excellent balance with a cross-plane crank.
Thanks for introducing us to the better section of the UK TH-cam community.
My pleasure. And something I intend to continue doing.
thank you too ;)
The V6 version sounds considerably better and feels more like an old British sports car with a 6 rather than a fancy muscle car
The video works better when your alone in the car James as you can feature the car a lot better alone !
Thank you for being a real petrol head, and an honest person.
Keep it real, always.
Best of luck!

For those curious, here is a site with some great pictures of the Jaguar V6 engine. You can clearly see what I was talking about as the engine is very much V8 size but with an odd V6 head on it.

I’ve had a xkrs and db9s and now own a f type and imo my f type coupe is a fantastic and fun car in the real world. Yes it not the most powerful car the Aston kept braking down and very rarely could I use the full power of the xk so I’m very very happy with my f type😊
anthony mackintosh : I had a DB9 Volante before buying my F-Type and had the same experience. The Aston was gorgeous but a piece of trash.
The opening tech info about the Jag was fascinating. I had no idea.
me neither!
And wrong.
Didn't know about Tom's channel I'm heading over there. He was very chilled with your comments.
Dammit JayEmm, every time I watch one of your videos I end up scouring Auto Trader for a used Evora 400
lol. look out for a Lotus Europa S. Cheaper and neater, but i'm biased.
welcome to my world! but I'm keeping the F Type for now
Get an Evora (NA) if you cannot stretch to a 400; it's 90% as good.
John Elder Mainly budget, John. NA is plenty quick enough, too.
Read his video of why he sold his Evora 400 first.
One of the most famous V8s with 2 cyclinders removed was the Chevy Small block became the 3800 and with a turbo is still famous AKA Buick Gran National, GMC Typhoon and Syclone, still winning at the drag track all over the US.
The F-Type became a legend in its own time, much like the E.
Great video, sounds great that Jag!
J's shirt is a testament to the cornering cornering G's...
Beautiful car!
basically you hated the jag from the start, however i bet you regret saying that know, the jag has class and poise, sound track to die for with looks to match.
If you just splurge for the Jaguar F-Type s or r V8 you don't have to worry about a hodgepodge engine fitment
I'm looking forward to it!
Me too
You do know the F-Type doesn't cost the same as a Aston, you can spec it in other colours, and its a GT/sports car, not a track car.
Jaguar were not thinking lightweight sports car (Lotus) when designing.
Except most of Jaguar's literature bangs on about how light and agile it is.
A second hand Vantage can be had for similar money, and is frequently discussed as being an alternative to a used (but newer) Jag
The guy in the flower shirt says the Jaguar design is below standard...brilliant, dude.
I'm confident about my fashion choices
It's good you think so...
They agreed with my choice.
everyone to there own likes buddy and I did look at a f type but not that much room for a 6ft 5 bloke the m2 and m4 would kill the f type v6 for speed
F type is nice, but so poorly designed for anyone over 6 foot
jonny jones haha I'm not that tall only 6ft 1 I don't find it too bad. I see your problem.
The Jaguar's of recent years look fantastic.
11k miles in 2 years is nuts!! I think i've done about 80k+miles in the last 2 years haha
Car noir....the guy with flowers on his shirt doesn't like black, what a surprise.
I feel like comparing an Evora to an F-type is quite daft, the jag is a big comfy cruiser with a beautiful soundtrack, the lotus is a stripped out baby track toy, even though they both have a V6 supercharged engine doesn’t mean they can be compared with each other
No it isn't, no it isn't and finally, no it isn't.
The pair make a perfect garage.
It's a GT vs a hyper sports car. One for the week (hard top tho) and one for the weekend.
LOL, written the above before watching.
Comments written before the end of a video are my favourite :)
Evora can be as good a GT.
The average car customer is an idiot. That is why they buy faux SUVs not useful estate cars
Why are modern Jags heavy, yet they started using alloy body structures before rivals ?
I really don't know. The car is 150kg heavier than the BMW I tested, which had a hard folding roof!
We did do my drive first.
Jag don't make their gearbox either. I love the Jag V8, but the V6 is not cool.
Historically Jaguar have also used Ford engines and pieces too.
Nice video poor Tom😊
F-Type wins hands down, its a stunning looking car.
Another quality video! Just curious, what kind of saw do they use to cut cylinders off an engine?😏
Some dodgy British one with bad teeth
They're blanked off, not cut off.
now when i see how clever was lotus that pit a toyota engine and gearbox..i was thinking but the one has toyota engine in it..thats how a car wins comparisions..reliability is the first thing all other are for wallpapers if they cant take care me
Some of the missing spec is shocking for a £60k car...
I wonder why the V angle of 60 degrees for a V6 is better than 90 degrees... i'll do a google search
Have a look. It's basically the fact you can space the firing evenly - 90 degrees is correct for a V8 but not a V6.
Let’s face the elephant in the room: it might not be the most brilliant idea to review a lent car with the owner sitting by your side. 🤦🏻♂️
Depends if you are a little pansy who can't accept some criticism
Jay, have a look at the Jag website, you can spec the interior, in as many colours as your wife has shoes! The Jag is a gentlemans sports car, a very different animal to the Lotus philosophy.
A Lotus is a gentleman's sports car too, at least they used to be
A lotus certainly isn't a gentlemen's car, lmfao.
All numbers ! Drive the bloody thing !
The f type is far more comparable to a Cayman, it's never been intended to compete in what are almost track cars.
Drive an Evora. It's far from an "almost track car". In fact it probably rides better than the Jag!
JayEmm on Cars cayman destroys the f type
...but not the Evora.
We need a review of the most maligned lotus of recent memory, the europa s/SE.
that all sounded very grudging....any compliment you tried to deliver you snatched half of it back....a little Clarkson esque...but it was two years ago and i think i'm judging you by the standard you set now...
You should definitely watch my F Type SVR review
@@JayEmmOnCars ....I will James...
Would have liked to see the top down, even if if was briefly.
I thought Aston Martin used buttons from Ford?
They did. For a while Ford owned both Jag and Aston.
JayEmm on Cars And Land Rover too during the same era!
Should have gone for the v8?

I have done my best in recent times to not make things too Lotus focused, although this review called for it. I have been asked many times how the Evora compares to an F-Type. People have come to my channel for Evora stuff so that's generally what they use as a benchmark.
Review the Jag and at the end do a 'So, for those of you who've asked in the past, let me compare this to my Evora...' hearing it all the way through is getting tedious..
Cletus, old sport, forget the F-Type. All I want to know is how the Evora compares with the John Deere lawnmower‼️😎😎😎
Someone get me a John Deere mower and I'll make that video.
Yeah, Cletus, now we're getting somewhere‼️ Calling all sit-down mower men, " Get Cletus a John Deere mower, the man has a video to make‼️".
My £900 1998 XJ8 that some scoundral of a previous owner decided to straight pipe, sounds better! That's an AJ-V8, but only 3.2 litres!
Sounds awesome. A bit like the E34 BMW I used to own, with a 3L V8.
JayEmm on Cars yes I should imagine a similar sound. But it highlights further the question, why make a 3.0 v6 out of a v8 block in the first place.
Cost saving.
If u want a safe place to put your money put it in a e. Type that's what I did!!
this "Review" finally shows the real "level" of your channel:
Only your own cars are kind of perfect (until you will face their problems...)
Other cars , like this FType are only "ok" .
And : it seems that you didn't realise that the FType convertible is in fact not comparable with an Evora, they are completely different cars.
Ok, not completely- both are on 4 wheels ...
This "comment" shows you haven't noticed the date this was filmed on, or even watched or listened to what I had to say about the car
You have to look very hard to find an F-Type without a shitty black interior. We finally found a 2018-R Dynamic, blue with white seats!
@@RootBeerGMT Some of us like shitty black interiors. They're popular for a reason. Trouble with light colours is they require a lot more maintenance.
Why is the V8 depreciating far more than the V6? I would find the noise of the V8 irritating.
People in the UK I think wanted the perceived better fuel economy
can you drive a 2018 jaguar f-type svr coupe id like to gear your opinion
I drove the SVR convertible
Sounds pleasant enough... Fat pillock! It's a bloody F-Type, it sounds epic!
Awkward situation: Pointing out all the things you don't like about a car while the generous owner who let you borrow it is sitting next to you.
Bit harsh this review
This is not me being harsh. This is me being honest, then pleasantly surprised.
One long whine
@@JayEmmOnCars You're an idiot - you disagree with about 90% published reviews of this car!
Feels like went into this one with your mind already made up.
It needs the V8 I think
The guy at Tesco said he was moving premises I just wondered if you would know 🤷🏽♂️👍🏽
I don't know about him moving premesis, he is normally there but he's more of a late night than an early morning person. Always good to ring ahead!
JayEmm on Cars will do thanks Jay
Appreciate everyone has their own opinions but found this abit overly critical tbf
I prefer the XK as well, they are not sports cars though in my eyes. GT car if you can afford the fuel in the 5l v8
Fiesty Henry
Fiesty..... 🤠
I prefer the XKRS as well JM 👌
Personally I'd get the entry cayman s. I have a soft spot for them, and they are relatively cheap
An excellent car, and superb value for money
How does it handle vs evora and z4 35is?
Between the two. Better handling for sports driving than the Z4, but less comfortable than both.
JayEmm on Cars do you think z4 handles little worse because of those crashy runflats? I replaced those with Michelin p4s and it's a major improvement. BTW I'm talking 35is specifically
The car I drove was not on the runflats. It is just setup too soft, it doesnt hold together in the corners well at all
"Yeah, the Jaguar...
In comparisons, hairs are routinely split in attempting to choose among them: 'Well, this car's navigation screen is sooo much better...'
I like cars whose character makes me look for excuses to take them out and enjoy them, which has absolutely nothing to do, really, with the numbers. In this case, I'd say the Lotus is far more likely to evoke that response. It's more focused, more visceral, more exciting, with more sporting purity. The Jag is for your wife who doesn't really care about cars.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
For an alternative take, look at my F Type SVR review
The problem I have with modern Jaguars is that they aren't different anymore. Jaguar of the past was like no other car manufacturer.
You think an ftype looks like ANYTHING else? and the sedans look NOTHING like the german cookie-cutter models. They ARE different in that they are all gorgeous, something you cant say about almost any audis, a lot of BMWs and some mercedes.
@@Gandalf721 so never driven one, right?
Baffling comment, given that the German car brands are now almost interchangeabley bland.
Ride quality wise, on scale of 0-10 please rate each one. Thank you
The weather there sucks ☹️
You going to hold the the interiors color against it. Lol, isn't that an option?
I didn't believe you when you said they just used a V8 and fitted V6 heads on it, had to look it up. What a hack job.
Wow!..... “You don’t hate it!”
Big praise.
Wet, narrow country roads is what I had available.
And the motoring press can be wrong.
Lol. Triggered f-type woner ;)
So how do you find Tom's channel?
found it
From a purely objective viewpoint, I can't say I like either of these cars.
Turbocharged V6s have happened, and I expect we may see more soon.
I share your affinity for a straight six but it isnt always a practical choice
Yes, but the turbo V6's are awful. Manufacturers are hoping F1 can sort-out the problems by developing their 1.6 litre four-stroke turbocharged 90 degree V6 engines. The V6 is shorter then the straight 6 and, therefore, easier to package. I don't know if we'll ever see the F1 developed V6's because of the big move to electric cars.
maserati biturbo?
Chris. An awful V6.
Green, if you're going to make a comment, would you please have the courtesy to at least try to fashion a coherent sentence❓
Oh my god you just moan ,moan ,moan you don’t like jaguar we get it!
If you want to see me moan, watch my Mercedes CLA45 video.
Maybe he's just telling the truth?
Good car knowledge and useful review however not sure why this was compared to an Evora as very different cars. The heavy Jag brings the looks, drama, noise, and road presence, and the Evora brings the drive-ability with that stripped out ‘kit car’ look (albeit you lose some dignity getting in and out). If used as a GT, I know which one I’d prefer to spend over an hour in!
Sorry for whatever Jaguar did to you in the past 😉
The irony here is the Evora is the much better GT. You should check out my F Type SVR review
think it would have bean better to put it against the f-type coupe mate as the soft top is heavier and roles moreyour car will be better track car and morning blast car for sure mate"" but cannot tell me the interior is pants when you drive a go cart lol and still looks bang on the f-type
The Coupe is actually not that much different weight wise, in terms of price the V8 would have also been a fairer comparison but alas we make do with what we have
You stick to your plastic Lotus. It’s looks like a cheap Vauxhall VX220!!
Helped me fall asleep
