If the music goes *don...don...don...don,* playing *pa* on the off-beat sounds like *don-pa-don-pa-don-pa-don-pa.* The swing beat is like the off-beat but later. If you play *pa* on the swing beat, it sounds a bit like a heartbeat: *don..padon..padon..padon..pa.*

Yeah the Rhythm Tengoku Gold actually has Lockstep have a darker purple on the offbeats but on the english release this change to darker pink. Its subtle but its there. This also applies for Lockstep 2. Interesingly on Megamix on all regions release, they kept the original Japanese coloring intact.
