So basically - Getaway car is the voice of the young girl, making reckless choices, believing she’s going to run away with a guy (who’s already taken). And then August is her as an older woman reflecting on her carelessness, and recognizing, “he was never mine.” The deep chorus of August reminds me of an older woman, who is now thinking back on her choices, which she realizes were wrong..though she looks back with some enchantment at the man in the memory. “So much for summer love and saying is, you weren’t mine to lose.” Getaway car - which is already a song about running away from a relationship, with another guy - describes her IN THE MOMENT, when she’s younger, believing she’s going to be with the guy... the voice is higher pitched.
