What an incredible video. I purchased my Elan IIe in 1998, as a hobby-to-learn while I was stationed in Riyadh. There are two incredibly useful features that no one talks about...eye controlled focus and depth of field. Thank you for discussing it...you are amazing!

Same, mine was given to me in mid 1998 for passing my GCSEs with “flying colours”. I still have it. It’s my favourite film camera.

My grandfather’s Canon EOS 650 (which I believe was the very first camera body featuring the EOS lens mount) had a ‘DEP’ mode too. So its inception was very ancient indeed in the Canon lineage. I later found it on my EOS 50E in 1998.

Hi there, I've had my 50e for a couple years now and I just love using it, when out and about I get lots of comments like : is that a digital Canon or is that one of the latest Canon cameras, boy are they surprised when I tell them it uses 35mm film, no it's not the latest Canon it's actually pretty old (20+ years). The Canon 50E is still a brilliant well built well specified camera even in 2024.
    Regards Rob.

Thanks for this video, I bought one recently and the depth of field feature is really interesting. Also there's no issue finding lenses, it can use any EF lens ever made!

Eye control never made it to digital as far as I know which was a shame. My EOS 3 has it with the 45 point AF and, after a lot of calibration, it works well. The first EOS was the 650 released in March 1987. Have two of these and they are well worth a look as they are cheap and take all EF lenses. The evaluative metering on them is good, although the camera design is typical 80's. Other options on later EOS film cameras were soft focus (double exposure with the lens in focus and then with it not) and the option to play tunes while the self timer counts down.

I have three, one has the Panoramic option. be very careful of the door catch as they are prone to breaking very easily. I bought a repair kit but the instructions were unreadable so it is just sitting on my shelf.

Mamiyapress, you are so correct about the rear door! I have two and both have broken rear doors, one of these actually broke whilst packed away in the bag with no intervention. It was placed in the bag with a film in it and about five months later it was taken out of the bag to be used and the back door was already broken and had opened?
Before anyone comments there was no third party intervention.
Apart from the back door issue it is a fantastic camera and although I am a Nikon user in main, its one of the most comfortable camera ever to hold. 👍🏻

They go under the radar a little on eBay... so grab one while they are sold in auction for a great price... even as low as £15.

Hi i just bought eos 55 from a local thrift store here but the top display is off and the quick control dial on the back door is missing, my question is just because i cant set my iso manually, is it possible to auto adjust iso with the dx coded film rolls like kodak gold 200, also do you think its possible to lock focus with the af pressing half way of the shutter button then continue with the composing before pressing the other half down to take the final image? looking forward to your thoughts.. Regards.
