"I didn't move out here to live in a bamboo hut." You made me LOL, literally, because that's exactly how I feel. I live in San Francisco, California, where I was born and raised. For all my life my front lawn has been made of concrete. (aka the "sidewalk"). I'm not retiring to the Philippines to "live in a bamboo hut."
I totally agree with the conviniences of the condo life, especially if you're a bachelor. In fact, it's not only for the Philippines. My primary residence is in Hawaii and it's nice to be able to just lock up my condo while I travel throughout the Philippiines. However, buyers beware! I have yet to live in a condo in the Philippines where the quality is up to my standards. Just rent! The only exception was the high end condos in BGC (ie. Hyatt Residence). In regards to living in BGC, I found my social and dating life suffered a bit there. Can't quite put my finger on this but I will definitely give it another try once I've found the right girl.
I live in my paid off home in California and purchased a condominium resort in Manila, and I absolutely love the area and the amenities they give to owners is priceless.
I did see a guy on a video that actually does want to live way out in the middle of nowhere in a rough-looking house that he's rehabbing. So some people do like that. Not me
Good interview. I'll be in BGC when I get out to the Philippines and make travel plans from there to visit other islands but always want to have my home base in BGC.
OMGOSS! I just can’t handle the concrete jungle anymore here on the US! Province life sounds wonderful. I’m a residential Contractor here and can build anything. Can’t wait to get there.
You guys are proving my point. I want to live in BGC for everything you’re saying. I am disabled so will need to go to the VA occasionally but here in the states it’s a struggle but there I can live a life of leisure and not really worry about things. I can send a Filipina to the markets for fresh veggies and fruit for Pennie’s. Which here in the states that would break the bank. I currently live full time in a RV traveling the states. I have a year planned to make myself debt free and ready to move there. Plane tickets will hurt but I will have no worries paying.
Believe me, if you are bringing different girls to your condo, the your security friends are warning them all about it. They are going to protect a sweet little Filipina way before you. Actually any Filipino before you.
I have experienced life in Cebu for two weeks. Living inside the bubble, in the case of Cebu, I T park, is far better. I stayed in the Avida Ryala tower, next to shops and restaurants.. Its a far better experience to live in a skyscraper than living outside. I stayed in the province too You have a lot of polution, everything seems dirty, stray dogs everywhere, the roads have no pavements for pedestrians, etc.
I have always had a detached house in the U.K. so a Condo is a bit scary and cramped. I’ll have to try it for a month and then try a house. I suspect a house is going to be better .
6 Work/ +21 Vacation/ 36 Calendar Days until Civil Service Retirement/ About 80 Days to Cebu City. I've lived in Small Towns all my life. I'm going to try IT Park or Business Park for Six Months.
This was a great vid for expat newbies (like me). I've always been a country boy, but there's a big difference between the US where Amazon will put it on your doorstep in couple of days and you can be in town in 10 or 15 minutes, and the province where things are a bit closer to the bone. Plus I seem to have become somewhat dependent on hi speed internet. Good timing for me. I may wind up in a house, but a condo seems a better place to start.
I live in BGC as well. One of the worst things about living in condos is dealing with your electric bill. You don’t deal with the company you deal with some dude riding down numbers and that’s your reading so if you have any altercations with administration, your power bill will go up 1000. It’s pretty shady, but that’s what you deal with.
I've never had an issue with my electric bill, and it's always less than what I hear most expats are paying in the province. My highest bill was something like 4,400php back a couple months ago when we had the heat wave.
right on spot I was raised in a small town, and I don't want to go back to live only to visit. province life is not worth it because its unlivable for us expats. for the Filipina, she loves it because she is used to it throwing water on the restroom floor and the toilet. I tried that with a Filipina and it was a disaster for me nothing close by.
Yes Condo living is the best way for new expats. Would never buy one as they don’t look after them. Knew someone who paid 5m for it brand new and people were selling them off for 3m pesos.
Condo is a more confident place to leave your valuables while you go out for the day , or even travel. Even if the travel is to the west and back. Big advantage Ive been a condo guy for years at home and abroad. Having one high security door facing the threat gives confidence and ability to sleep well.
I’ve been wanting to check out BGC. I will since i am about an hour outside of there now. I’m more of a nature man but I wouldn’t mind taking a look. I want a place that’s close to an airport. I just weathered the storm Carina. I think the Visayas have my heart so far. I am in Los Banos Laguna area now with my girlfriend. Good thing no flooding here. Looking forward to getting out of here going back south to Dumaguete Bohol Camiguin Camotes Siquijor Leyte etc. Palawan is awesome too ❤
Many thanks for the content. I also want to emigrate to the Philippines and because of you I have chosen Dumanguete. I'll take a closer look on my next vacation. Do you have any tips for accommodation (2 adults and a child 4 years old)? Andre
I originally picked Cebu for my soft landing, now I'm going to Iloilo. Mainly because of the infrastructure and the walking esplanades. However, I'm landing in Cebu for 5 days just to get rid of the jet lag and see some of the malls there, then on to Iloilo city. Is Iloilo a good choice for a soft landing? I'll be staying at the Quest Hotel while in Cebu like you mentioned before.
Depends on your lifestyle. If you like it more quiet with less traffic iloilo all the way. If you like more choices in the ladies, way more reliable power, way better condos, better restaurants, mountains, oceans, and better malls. Cebu all the way.
Most of the condos I have seen online, even through large realty sites, have very uncomfortable looking sofas and chairs also. "New" condos even have furniture that look like they came out of a 1970s waiting room.
True...It also often looks as if its left over furniture from different houses that was used for the condo to avoid investing in actual fitting furniture
i have lived in cebu city in IT park for 7 years, the furniture is so bad an not comfortable. I bought my own recliner and mattress pad, the sofas are small and hard.
What is the “real Philippines”? Yes there are poor areas there, just like in almost any other country in the world. For example, California has the 5th largest economy in the world, but has over 180,000 homeless people living in the state. California is also #1 in the entire country for effective poverty rate (how much your income is vs. how much it costs to live where you are). BGC is a wealthier area and it’s not even nearly the wealthiest place in the Philippines. Poverty is a part of the Philippines and so are the wealthy areas. The “real Philippines” is different from person to person. The real Philippines for me will be living in a larger city, but also farm life a couple of days a week.
I am looking at possibly buying a condo in BGC now. They are more expensive than i thought, but still much cheaper than anywhere that i am in the San Francisco Bay area.
Rarely hear my neighbor. I'm in a corner unit, so share just one wall, which is all closet space in my bedroom, so that helps to sound proof. The only time noise is a factor is early morning when I get up before my gf, so I watch TV with the sound low. The motorcycles can get loud and I'm on the 29th floor. But during the day I rarely notice the traffic.
I have all the luxuries of my life in my working home in Australia, but will avoid BGC with every breath I take. Davao / Digos is my haunt and I love it. I am the tabo king 😅. Beautiful natural places to visit, great people around me. Great internet streaming what I want. The thing I don't have nor want is the bar girl scene. You so called bulls can have that world.
I would think BGC would get old after awhile, it’s a bubble, there’s nothing Tropical about living in BGC yes, you have world class restaurants and Malls but I prefer Tropical 🌴 pros and cons to consider
Try living in the provinces, with the noise, smoke, air pollution, traffic, disputes with your neighbours, roosters, constant barking dogs, mosquitos, never ending humidity, thieves, cheap substandard housing, and much much more. I can guarantee you, you will never be bored, that is if boredom bothers you. Something to consider.
Living on the beach full time is not my cup of tea. The idea sounds great until you actually do it. It’s hot, swimming in salt water gets old. Finding a place in the province near a beach is harder than you think. Issues I ran into was things like the neighbors were raising pigs in their front yard, a guy has 10 fighting cocks staked out in their huts close by, the beach a low tide is a mud flat, the nice beach is too far from town and borderline dangerous due to bandits, or the lot you really like does not have a “clear title” and you’d be crazy to buy it. Swimming in a freshwater pool, using the gym in the condo, shopping and restaurants, seems like the way to go. Then go to a beach resort now and then, but don’t live at the beach.
I would feel that way in a studio unit, so having a 1 bedroom and a larger unit with a full kitchen doesn't feel like a hotel room at all. Plus being on the 29th floor in a corner unit, I have a spectacular view that feels like a penthouse.
Stayed in BGC recently at the Grand Hyatt. Never really understood the appeal. Just buildings and malls. I travel internationally every 1-2 months, and on the world stage BGC is rather sub-par so far as a city goes. This August I'll be in NYC, Emirates first class to Athens, then Istanbul, then Singapore. Cities with more character than just buildings. There is a reason we leave the US, because we don't miss Texas roadhouse and Olive garden 😂 Also, the people and dating in Cebu far surpass Manila.
Maybe it's just me, I've been to BGC twice now, I walk around and I see average overweight girls with a lot of makeup. Where are the 9s and 10s your guest is talking about?
My goal was to retire to Portugal but the Euro killed that dream Being an older woman alone I don’t think a third world country would be a safe option for me
I agree that living in a condo is the 100% right choice for me. The only/biggest negative was the staff - mentally - kept track of the number of girls that would come to your room - and you would develop a negative reputation for plowing through the local young girls. I was told by one of the security guards who became a good friend - that I was becoming a topic of conversation of the staff - and I ought to slow down on the frequency. (16 girls in 4 months). I eventually landed on one - and quickly my status went from horny foreigner - to family man - and my girlfriend became a local celebrity as EVERYBODY knew her as the one that tamed me.
Intriguing. In Jomtien I've invited FAR fewer girls to visit me, than the months I was in hotels. Part of the reason is my condo has a guard gate staffed 24-7. Hotels were a front desk staff (and not all asked guest ID). It's a reputation issue for me. I'm less worried about the guys judging me, than adjusting to a more permanent, long term fiscal lifestyle. I'm not on vacation
Oh i live in seattle but have a place on the beach in samar i have a suv and a sppeed boat i would rather fish or go island hoping and not worry about trafic when i first came we lived in passay in condos but it was small going to the casino or mall got old
Filipina will tell expats how nice and simple life the province is and from experience don't believe that crap. that's her way of setting you up to take care of her family. stay in the city and enjoy life there and if she wants you then she will be with you in the city.
I could never live in a condo in a building. I'd be nervous as hell knowing the tofu-dreg Xynese style construction prevelant in Asia.. I gotta have some grass and trees. Heck I've only been in a tall building a handful of times. TBS I wouldn't live in the real province either. I hate roosters'!
Condos are a losing investment in the PH. You gain nothing, and when it’s time to sell, you won’t be able to sell your property for years. Better to buy in Japan. You get more profits
In Google search "condo rental [name of location] Philippines" and that will usually lead you to the various real estate agents or brokers. Also, some high-rise buildings handle their own listings. Probably best to retain a free broker. Tell em what you need, they will find it for you. I have one broker sending me weekly updates here in San Francisco, California, so I can see what's out there.
Thanks for the video about condo living. Why do you always just talk about MEN coming to the Philippines? And why are you always so interested in dating? I'm a widow planning to retire in the Philippines. I'm happy being single.what is it with you men? It boggles the mind actually.🙄
Caroline, I think you might be surprised that as a western widow retiring in the Philippines you might find the dating thing back on the table again. There are many men that are probably over getting scammed from the local ladies and would look for someone sweet and kind and honest to spend some social time to enjoy a good conversation with.
Where else can you go where a 30 year old woman - wants me - a 64 year old man? The women want the relationship more than men do. It's counterintuitive to our western minds - but it's a reality in the PH.
Caroline, if you watch Gio’s channel you must not be reading or looking at the comments. If you did you would see a 99%+ male response so of course he is going to respond to the majority of his audience. Reading your comment, you say you are a widow happy being single, great that’s wonderful for you. Rather than being happy for men wanting to date you say: Why are you so interested in dating, What’s it with you men, it boggles the mind. demeaning at best. Definitely sounds like you are done and expired when it comes to men but it doesn’t mean we are, especially when we can have a traditional, younger or not, loving, caring, beautiful, woman in our lives that the west lacks. You want to retire to the Philippines, enjoy when you get here. Smiles
I stayed at IT Park for a couple days and wasn't really impressed. A much smaller poor man's version of BGC, with not a lot of good restaurant choices.
@@JJthelonelybullinasia If the only/main thing you guys are looking for is fancy restaurants, then stay your high-food-maintenance a$$es in the USA or go to Italy and eat all of the cheese you are looking to feast on. Geez, you guys complain more than the modern women that we expats are so happy to be away from.

I'd rather be in the BGC bubble as opposed to the real Philippines.
99% of people living in "the real Philippines" would be ecstatic to live in the BGC bubble.
Yes. It ain't life in the Philippines
Lol yea, I want a nice place

BGC should be the easiest place to meet partners. My Tinder was off the charts in that area. Met a new one nearly every night 🔥
@@youngandfree93 Tinder? Ok, might give it a shot. Mahalo.
Yeah that makes sense. In BGC ppl are usually just living in their own little bubbles and minding their business so it can be more socially isolating.
Having a 711 in your building is a reason to rent /not rent a place -
The convenience is massive , and hard to overstate
GREAT video.
JJ is a good example to take notes from.
I live in my paid off home in California and purchased a condominium resort in Manila, and I absolutely love the area and the amenities they give to owners is priceless.
What building?
This dude is very smart proper spot on I agree with everything he is doing, renting is the way to go, only fools would sink money in a forgein asset.
I did see a guy on a video that actually does want to live way out in the middle of nowhere in a rough-looking house that he's rehabbing. So some people do like that. Not me
Thanks for all the info Gio. Happy Birthday! Enjoy you Japan trip. 🎉🎉

Bringing many girls to your condo is dangerous, better hide your money and electronics, and you could be set up.
I heard the same happens in Thailand. The security guards will tell all the girls visiting you that you're a butterfly.

Swimming in a freshwater pool, using the gym in the condo, shopping and restaurants, seems like the way to go.
Then go to a beach resort now and then, but don’t live at the beach.

Buy a car and live in a gated community with Philippinos. Like you Gio

Gio, I have been an apartment dweller all of my adult life. I plan on renting a condo.
After a while living in a condo feels like living in a hotel.
As long as it is a 5 star hotel I am good with that. :)
I would feel that way in a studio unit, so having a 1 bedroom and a larger unit with a full kitchen doesn't feel like a hotel room at all. Plus being on the 29th floor in a corner unit, I have a spectacular view that feels like a penthouse.
Give me that girl in the thumbnail and I will live on a bed of nails!!
For a while…
Just remember, no matter how good looking a woman is, there some guy who is tired of her sh!t🙀
lol
Dime a Dozen - seriously - it's like a buffet dinner.
There is a reason we leave the US, because we don't miss Texas roadhouse and Olive garden 😂
Also, the people and dating in Cebu far surpass Manila.
Maybe it's just me, I've been to BGC twice now, I walk around and I see average overweight girls with a lot of makeup. Where are the 9s and 10s your guest is talking about?
You left the US to get away from Texas Roadhouse and Olive Garden? That's an odd reason to leave. Were they stalking you? 😅
@@JJthelonelybullinasia They are merely a couple of the many things we don't miss ;) Touché though 😆
Arriving in Manila on the 8th. Any recommendations for a safe, centrally located condo rental in BGC?
My goal was to retire to Portugal but the Euro killed that dream Being an older woman alone I don’t think a third world country would be a safe option for me
I'm a single female going to retire in Davao. I'm planning to live in a condo for safety and ease. I think Davao is safe.
I hear that NY, Chicago and San Fran. is much more dangerous than PH
Is Portugal no longer affordable?
I agree that living in a condo is the 100% right choice for me. The only/biggest negative was the staff - mentally - kept track of the number of girls that would come to your room - and you would develop a negative reputation for plowing through the local young girls. I was told by one of the security guards who became a good friend - that I was becoming a topic of conversation of the staff - and I ought to slow down on the frequency. (16 girls in 4 months). I eventually landed on one - and quickly my status went from horny foreigner - to family man - and my girlfriend became a local celebrity as EVERYBODY knew her as the one that tamed me.
It's none of their friggin business. Damn busy bodies.
How far away is Manila?
How is getting a date there in BGC ??
How much is your condo rental in BGC?
I pay 35k php a month.
@@JJthelonelybullinasia Thanks . How much is a larger 2 bedroom with plenty of Western amenities ? Do you have an idea ?
I could never live in a condo in a building. I'd be nervous as hell knowing the tofu-dreg Xynese style construction prevelant in Asia.. I gotta have some grass and trees. Heck I've only been in a tall building a handful of times. TBS I wouldn't live in the real province either. I hate roosters'!
Can you tell where you go that cool hat ?? Also where in BGC Can I Have a darn cigarette??
Condos are a losing investment in the PH. You gain nothing, and when it’s time to sell, you won’t be able to sell your property for years. Better to buy in Japan. You get more profits
Buy a condo is not interesting, maybe rent for a while, too much rules also, restrictions.
I don't think I would ever buy a condo.
how do you find a condo for one two or three months ?
Airbnb is one way
In Google search "condo rental [name of location] Philippines" and that will usually lead you to the various real estate agents or brokers. Also, some high-rise buildings handle their own listings.
Probably best to retain a free broker. Tell em what you need, they will find it for you.
I have one broker sending me weekly updates here in San Francisco, California, so I can see what's out there.
Village life sucks big time guys I lasted 3 weeks
Thanks for the video about condo living. Why do you always just talk about MEN coming to the Philippines? And why are you always so interested in dating? I'm a widow planning to retire in the Philippines. I'm happy being single.what is it with you men? It boggles the mind actually.🙄
Men make up for the majority and most men are looking for a Filipina.
Caroline, I think you might be surprised that as a western widow retiring in the Philippines you might find the dating thing back on the table again. There are many men that are probably over getting scammed from the local ladies and would look for someone sweet and kind and honest to spend some social time to enjoy a good conversation with.
Just live your life and don't worry about how men live theirs.
Smiles
For me the attraction to province life stops at the tabo.
If ed IT. Park for me
I stayed at IT Park for a couple days and wasn't really impressed.
