- In this video I'm going to try hair singeing- a hair trimming technique that has been around since the at least Victorian times. Burning the ends of your hair is supposed to help battle split ends and retain moisture in the hair. Let's see how this goes!

You’re so brave! One thing people need to keep in mind would to NOT have hair products in if they wanted to do it! Hairspray is especially flammable!product free hair only!

I think as long as you aren't spraying hair spray into an open flame you can be sure your hair isn't going go up in flames. Especially if you put hairspray on the night before the alcohol that makes it flammable is completely gone. It's probably not even higher than 50%.

I'm Brazilian and singeing/cutting split ends is still a thing here (I think it's because Brazilian women really love ultra long hair). Some people do it at home and some do it at the salon (there are some hair styling equipment that cut the split ends now too). When I had very long hair (it fell down to my hips) I'd do it once a week (using the scissor/cutting version) and it really helped with the split ends. Now I don't do it since I don't have split ends anymore. I'd recommend the cutting version but not the singeing version since hair catches fire really easily and also the heat would probably damage the hair too. ''Fun'' fact: Some strict churches that proihibit women from cutting ther hair consider singeing as cutting and therefore, sinful too.

I hadn't even thought about singing as a workaround of religious doctrine. Like how at one point the Catholic church considered beaver fish for lent bc it was aquatic. I mean, you say the singing doesn't get through but it'd be funny if that was accepted in some places

I think it's a latinoamerican thing... that comes from great grandmas that left Europe or something haha.

God cutting took me 2 hours for 3 sections, still have some as well
I remember girls doing this at school with matches when I lived in France. They said they would save money and avoid needing the hairdresser. That was about 40 years ago!!
I am from Brittany in France and it's not that unusual here! My grand'ma and her sisters used to do it when they were young in the 40's and i do it sometimes too! Singeing is one of the best care for long hair so you have to trim it all to remove splited ends... Now few tips for those who want to try:
- Make SURE all the windows and doors around you are closed!
- Make SURE your hair is free from any hair product containing alcools or oils.
- As Lucy said, you don't have to touch your hair with the fire!! just approach slowly with the flame as close as necessary.
- I personally prefer to use a lighter so you have a better control and you can keep it in your hand!
- You can cauterize the end of the hair section approaching the flame slowly.

I was going to travel this year to Europe, but well, we all know what happened...
I know everyone goes to the main places in Paris, but I'm crazy about French little villages and towns.
I know there's Strasbourg more at the south, but also one called Eze which is one of the most beautiful places I've seen that I'd like to go.
I've been searching on Google maps a few Beautiful villages in your county, and i remember saving one, but if you have any to recommend, I'd appreciate it! 💜

Vaguely reminds me of this wood burning class I took when I was 15, the girl that sat across from me would often singe bits of her bangs/fringe on accident, and I’d just look up from my piece to see her cutting off yet *another* piece of burnt hair with a disgruntled look on her face 😅

I would fear more long term damage would be incurred by burning the hair with fire than just being super gentle with your hair and regular light trims. If you have tons of split ends, you're too rough with it.

i’ve only seen this done on dreadlocks, never seen it done on different textured hair so that was interesting.
My hairdresser always uses heated scissors for my hair! I never thought of it as the same as what you're doing here but it definitely is. My hairdresser told me the main advantage is that the protein in the hair "hardens" or something like that and that will prevent split ends. My hair always feels amazing after I get it cut and it stays that way for longer.

Presumably the idea is that tightly twisting the section reduces the amount of oxygen in contact with the main strand of hair, while the splits have more. Similarly to the way a piece of string burns more easily at the end than if you try to light the middle?

Some salons here in Russia offer so called “hot scissors”. The idea is basically the same except it’s safer cause you aren’t dealing with an open fire. Don’t know if it works actually
It is easier and cheaper to do search and destroy at home with a pair of hair scissors. I just did it today.
In the original Willy Wonka, the hairdressers did this to the actress who played bratty Veruca Salt. Because of the order of filming, her hair is different lengths throughout the film!
Greetings from Greece!I have had this done a number of times on my ultra long hair many years ago,although I don't think it is common in Greece.My hair was down to my hips then and the process was a bit tedious but it was worth it!The hairdresser told me back then that the twisting lets the split ends fly while protecting the healthy hair.She didn't hold the candle for long at one place,rather running it up and down the hair piece.I remember the sound and the smell which where kind of worrying but my hair was lovely and soft after that!

I used to do this as a kid. I hated how the hairs would come out of the pigtail and dutch braids. I would sneak outside and do this with a lighter. lol
I would LOVE to see how continuous use of this technique compares to cutting the hair! Thank you for being brave and showing us how this works! I've never heard of this technique but am intrigued now!!

I saw that video -- it looked like such a mess, but her hair looked great afterward. Being a germaphobe, I can't imagine ever being comfortable with having raw egg in my hair, but more power to the folks who don't mind!
There was a while when I washed my hair with egg, and it did indeed give volume.

There used to be a salon in NYC that catered to long hair. The stylists would stand on stools so that they could reach the ends of the hair when it was lifted up for trimming. They also had a hair artist who was trained in candling hair. Not a skill us pixie-haired girls will ever need lol.
That sounds amazing! Any time I go to get my hair cut it's usually me doing the standing up so they can reach the ends XD

@@tinyandcharming i have shoulder length hair and one woman. (Friend of mom. Been to a salon once) explained to me that it is so they can see how it falls. Having you stand up makes you higher thus they can more easily cut lower plus better view. I assume in that salon they use stools so they can hold the hair up and be even higher than if you just were to sit in a stool. Since especially for layers some hold the hair above you to cut em. Makinh the layers even and since the bottom has to travel further. And when down the top has to travel further. You can get real nice "layers" (since no one wants actual layers)
You standing up has a different reason than them on a stool. It's great if a hairdresser is comftorble with asking you to stand up. They could possibly while you sat. (Unless like it can only lay on you.) It just ensures you will get the best result possible. It typically only is at the end. To make sure it actually falls straight.
Once I accidentally caught my ends on fire via a candle, I washed it many times and it took AGES (okay it probably only took a total of six washes, the first shower after I burnt my hair, I shampooed it about four times) for the sulfur smell to leave lmao
I would prefer the sulfur smell to the burning hair smell myself

I heard some VS models talking about this a few years ago, but when I researched I couldn't find a reliable resource of how to do it. Now I want to give it a try (I usually do this with the scissors)
This video makes me want to burn my split ends. I read about how they do it in Brazil, and they wet the hair before twisting it and that makes a lot more sense. I think I'm going to try one strand at a time.

Hello! I have no idea if you will see this message or not but if you do I think that you will find this quite educational. I am a textile designer with a reasonably vast knowledge about fibers. Wool was and is used in many flame retardant (note NOT FLAME PROOF) textiles. And since your hair is composed of the same material with the only real difference being the molecular structure, this resistance to fore would be the same as for wool. When wool catches fire, it will first flame up and then it will quite quickly go out again as the flame essentially suffocates from the material. When you twist your hair, the fire is deprived of oxygen in the piece of hair, thus it can most easily only access the bits sticking out. I hope that you found this interesting enough to add up for the long read! 😊

My hair is very similar in texture to yours and my split ends have split ends. I tried this once and I thought I was going to end up like Anakin Skywalker. But then I held the flame directly to the split hairs. There's a part of me that would like to try it again properly but not without taking out a fire insurance policy on myself first.
Hair, like wool or other natural fibres, is naturally fire resistant, and wont stay burning once the heat source is gone. Its one way you can differentiate between natural and synthetic fibres. That's why it doesn't just catch all your hair on fire!
I don't know if there are many hairdressers in the Netherlands that do the cutting with heat but mine does and it makes a world of difference. Normally I get split ends after 1 to 2 months but when I get it cut with the heated scissors I don't have any split ends or breakage for 5 to 6 months so my hair can grow much faster. So I would recommend singing if you want to grow your hair and keep it healthy :)
An old friend of mine used to do it when we were like 13/14. It stank but she liked it.
My grandma was born in 1902 and when I was little she used to do this to my hair she said to prevent split ends.
