    Ok I got some feedback. 1- Production value: *chef's kiss* so good. Really, really good.
    2- Presentation - I like how you reference page numbers often. You use beginner-friendly language, and are mindful not to go above your viewers' heads.
    3- Curious why you went from attributes to skills and then back to adjustment points instead of doing attributes, adjustment, then skills-?
    4- You really should be referencing the latest copy of the rules that were published in Feb 2020. I can tell from the paragraph on Adept Power Points at 11:20 that it's not the latest. If you did that for the sake of accessibility, because new people probably have hard copies without those changes, I understand.
    5- I think the 'official' line is that initiation is not allowed at chargen so thank you for adding that caveat when you covered it.
    6- The Finishing Touches list at 16:54 and beyond would have been better presented in the context of filling out lines on the character sheet, like you did for attributes and skills, instead of slide after slide of text.
    Probably the best 6e char creation video on youtube

      Thank you for your comment. Here's a few replies:
      1 - Uh, thank you so much!
      2 - That's my goal. I always try to write these in a way new players or non-players will comprehend.
      3 - I think my plan was to show adjustment point expenditures separate from initial expenditures because they were a source of confusion for me when I made my first characters. I felt like they should be explained clearly aside from magic, metatype, and attributes.
      4 - Indeed. I made a choice to stick with the primary corebook only, and not include different material within the context of this video. I know the errata is out there, which is why I mentioned it, but I didn't want to get mired in various releases. Ease of access.
      5 - Yeah, this is one of my issues with the SR6 line. Things are vague and rules tend to be buried in off-hand, casual chat. Plus, the GM and group are the final arbiters of what's allowed at the table.
      6 - Thanks for mentioning. I made a creative choice on this one, and I'll try it the other way next time.
      Glad you liked the video!

      As to point 4 - with the insane number of basic errors in the book (Nowhere does it mention Resonance is limited by Essence) I should frankly get a free reprint copy. Early adopters got shafted.

    Appreciate the video- I’m moving off D&D 5e and will come back to reference this.
    I think also there are two basic ways to DM/GM - one is to be an absolute photographic memory chad and have 100% technical mastery of the material, and the other is to just go by intuition and have a good sense of balance between rule adherence and slack. I’m more towards the latter.
    When running 5e one of my house rules was, you have a hard 30 second limit on looking up some obscure rule, otherwise I just call a simple advantage/disadvantage to keep things moving and minimize out-of-game meta stuff.
    I plan to get as familiar as I can with SR 6, but apply the same approach. If the game is still fun even if we do something wrong, it’s still a success 🙂

    Shadowrun unquestionably needed/needs a not only a character creation tutorial but it also a very condensed, focused, & organized 30-50 page splat-book that is just purely focused on character creation with minimal text-fluff.
    Edit: Forgot to type this in "Thankyou for making this video."

    • @JayPaulson-hg2mc
      @JayPaulson-hg2mc ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because it isn't a level system. Characters start out more powerful than the average person right at the start. So, it is kind of like making a 5th level character for your first time playing.
      For a fast way take one of the archetypes and just move points around.

    Hi! I'm a first time GM for SR, and I'm going over book pages while I'm watching your video. Took it as a challenge to find a solid answer one way or the other when you said you don't see a place in the book where it says you can't take initiation at creation.
    The advancement chart cost on page 68 indicates with an asterix, which traits can't be purchased at creations. Those are new spell and complex form. In other words, it explicitely says you CAN purchase initiation at creation. :)
    Anyway, this video saved my life as a fledgling SR GM. Thanks!

    Awesome video! Minor detail critique: when you spend karma during character generation, it gives allowance only for attributes, skills, qualities, and nuyen. Page 66, step 4, is where it doesn't say you can initiate during chargen.

    • @TwoDTen
      @TwoDTen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, I've read that passage. However, there are several other passages in the book where the rules specifically state you can't do a thing, such as on page 65, under skills. "During character creation, skills can be purchased up to rank 6... Only one skill can be put at that maximum."
      I am sure the explicit exclusion of Initiation and Submersion is accidental, but that's on the game creators and not the players reading the book. The fact that the passage you reference doesn't expressly state Initiation doesn't exclude it, in my opinion, because, well, it doesn't. It's either Karma or it's something else - like freebie points. If you aren't specific about rules, SR6 Devs, it opens the entire system up to interpretation and inference.
      If I want magic of 7 and I have to initiate to do it, I have to spend 11 karma, just like it says in the Advancement Costs table. Right? Time and training aren't a factor for skills and attributes at character creation, so why should they be for initiation?
      Anyways, I see your point and logically agree with you. However, the creators and developers of SR6 should have been more precise in their writing. And errata. And just about everything in this book.

    From what I can tell, Initiation can’t be taken at creation with the rules as written. As the GM of my own SR6 game I decided it can be taken and also offered my players the Sum To 10 method of Priority selection. I believe more options makes for a better experience. Speaking of better experiences, I wish this video had been around a year ago when we started the game. It would have made everyone’s life better. Well done.

    Thanks for this video! I've been playing Shadowrun since 1990, and still run 1e at old school friendly game conventions. Having owned every edition since first, I feel, and the majority of my players agree, that Shadowrun peaked in a rules+setting sense, with 2nd Edition. 3rd started splitting hairs with skills, 4th changed how dice work, and 5th and Sixth World tried to clean up rules, but fumbled, and the setting drifted so far from what it used to be.
    And Anarchy? Great idea. Questionable execution.

    Yoo kick ass. I pretty much figured it out on my own through trial and error, internet research, and reading the book for about two days straight trying to make sure I was understanding it properly. Now I can crank out two to four characters for a new group in about an hour and a half or so. 6th edition gets way too much hate, I love it and so does my current tabletop group. Oh, and I make them all watch your videos to learn about the world. You're the best Shadowrun content creator please keep it up

    I spent 2 weeks building my "Rigger-but-not-a-Rigger" character Beau (or: Mr. B as he's known) as my first character in SR5. He's literally just a Mechanic that loves Augmented Reality to control several drones and his suped up beast of an Ares Roadmaster haha. No Control Rig at all because I completely missed that part haha. He's an effective taxi and delivery driver, despite not being able to Jump In.
    Edit upon rewatch...: If you gain Power Points equal to your magic rating but also take the Power Point Metamagic, wouldn't your Power Points equal 8 at that Initiation?

    Thanks for this video, your timing is great! I just want to throw out that oftentimes, the example archetypes in the core book are not actually char gen legal. It was worse in 5th edition but its true in this edition as well. They also commission the art and then ask people to make characters based on the art, so sometimes they are a little wonky (5th ed had the somewhat notorious 'Troll Poser' combat mage).

    • @TwoDTen
      @TwoDTen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I’ve had some other comments related to the archetypes. However, all of them have changes in errata, so it is what it is. I’d let anyone sitting down at my table play them.

    isnt it a better fix to just stay with a previous version
    i restarted playing SR latley and we are just playing in the 50s with 2nd ed
    i might advance to 3/4/ or even 5 as we advance in the years but really the metaplot of the 50-60 is also much better so i dont really see why i should go to 6th and the 80s - am i missing something?

    • @TwoDTen
      @TwoDTen  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      5th edition is essentially out of print. New players to the game aren't going to have a simple way to track down 5e books, especially if they're buying physical content. Honestly, for folks enjoying an older version, yeah, stay with that one. There's nothing wrong with sticking to a version you enjoy better. If you don't want to spend the money on new books or jump into the newest metaplot, you don't have to!
      I don't personally make these videos to "sell" anyone on new content. I'm not getting paid to make videos, so do what makes you happy. I'm simply trying to provide aid to players that I couldn't find when I made it, or I couldn't find one that I liked, etc.
