I was having lunch at a diner in Gary, Indiana in early October 1968. When someone played this song on the jukebox, everyone in the diner stopped what they were doing to listen to Janis Joplin's unique one of a kind voice.
Phil Jamieson Her and Jim Morrison has raw, powerful and naturally gifted voices that could never be taught. They could make you shriek or melt. It’s nuts. Mercedes Bens is a rare song that is absolutely full without anything but Janis’s voice.
First time I heard this song, my first thought was "I want to smack whoever hurt this poor woman so badly that she sang with such genuine heartache". Joplin sang with such passion and emotion that if you don't feel something while listening to her stuff, you may not have a soul.
my dad passed away in december at the age of 71 i was 20, he fought in vietnam, had me at 50 with his malaysian wife (together 40 years till he passed) and raised me on classic rock. im 21 now and on bad days when i miss him real bad i just listen to his favorite songs, he loved janis joplin
my dad passed away in november it’ll be 2 years ago since he did and i also use music to connect to him! music does wonders! :) hang in there bro, you’ll get through this taking it one day at a time.
Sierra Siegfried My dad died October 29th of this year. He loved classic rock too! I’m 22. I grew up listening to classic rock and absolutely love all of it but nobody can quite compare to Janis.🌹
Only one Janis. That perfectly raspy voice and boundless enthusiasm that shine out in all of her tracks. NOBODY ever covered this song and did it justice. RIP Janis a.k.a. "Pearl"!
I met a 16 year old, also from Texas same as Janis, who had that same raspy voice. I tried everything I could think of to convince her caretaker to get her into singing lessons, bit she wouldn't buy it, unfortunately. Performed karaoke to perfection on a couple of songs at an event next door to me in Michigan. The caretaker and I dated in high school, so I was hoping like hell to have influence, but it didn't happen. Damn, damn!
When you smoke weed and listen to this song. You understand it in a completely different way. This is a Masterpiece. Well done Janis. Thank you for sharing.
This is my baby, Macina Lupita's song. She's 14, about to be 15. I've been singing this to her all the years, from puppy to senior. She is the sweetest, more tender and caring baby a gal could ask for. And the best sister ever. Macy, you can take as many pieces as you desire, just as long as we end up together when it's all over. I love you my wittle baby🐾🩷. We were always meant to be. Layla, Macy, Momma 4ever.
I am kind of in the same boat as you. I didn't know how great Janis Joplin was until I randomly looked up Look Who's Talking and a Fan said something like,"The funniest scene for me is when Cry Baby by Janis Joplin is played and Janis's legendary wail is synched up to Mikey crying as if Janis's wail was coming out of Mikey's mouth. LMAO!" I looked up Cry Baby from Janis and was blown away and went down the Rabbit Hole and found other good songs from her, including this one. :)
We were at camping with two of my relatives on top of a snowing mountain beside a fire and one of them played this song and i swear it touched my heart.
That's a very good song, this! And i don't know what you do to make these very good songs! I am learning this song right now because my singing teacher gave me this song!
Got the first line wrong, after the initial "come on." It's actually... "Didn't I make you feel like you wanna own me." With the typical "a" in front of "me" to make the syllables line up in sinc with the notes being played. Lots of singers do that.
THIS WOMAN WAS SO TALENTED AND TEXAS DIDN'T APPRECIATE HER BUT WHO CARES SHE HAD LOST OV HATERS SHE IS AMAZING !!!... PS JANICE YOU LIVE ON STRONGER THAN EVER YOUR HEART AND SOUL LIVES ON THROUGH YOUR MUSIC THANK YOU FOR YOUR GRACE IT OUR HONER TO LISTEN TO YOUR MUSIC 🌸YOU ARE A BLESSING💕
Same here, dude. I was made fun of in middle school cuz I liked metal and rock from the 90s. now it's been a year since graduation and I like that stuff AND things from the 40s til now. I'm not a poser, I just love music. Peace is always my answer.
56 jaar geleden hoorde ik haar voor het eerst. Iemand die mij dierbaar is zei me dat ze de stem van de toekomst was. Spijtig ik hoor haar nog steeds. De beste zangeres ooit. 2023.
Never realised why my uncle Dottie Hilliard loved this as im.older i totally inderstand and wow im addicted to this tune music really brings us all together in some way 🙌😁rest in peace he would sing this x
So many people took pieces of my heart the last few years that they took it all now I don't have one. Done me a favor I didn't know I needed. Much gratitude to everyone. Kisses .. Muah ... xxxxx's & ooooo's

Damn, that’s good shit! 1968 was a good year for music too.
Ya it came out in 69 though.......lol
Waw, they just dont make music like this anymore xx
I drunkenly played it at norteno bar in Mexico on a Saturday night. Everyone there also stopped what they were doing...and physically threw me out.
@@manguydude905 To be fair, he was only off by one year... I myself got 2003 and 2005 mixed up frequently, and that was a TWO year gap!
Nobody else ever sounded like this. She was a unique talent.
Phil Jamieson Her and Jim Morrison has raw, powerful and naturally gifted voices that could never be taught. They could make you shriek or melt. It’s nuts. Mercedes Bens is a rare song that is absolutely full without anything but Janis’s voice.
Well, nobody has ever sounded exactly like anybody else. Ever. But, you are so correct. She has a fantastic gift.
@@camocrocs1490 'had' a fantastic gift, surely?
To me, it completely encapsulates the pain and compulsion of being in love with someone who doesn't really care at all about you.
V I this hurts!
This sounds like me😓

Nice story of your Dad and nice of you to think about your Dad in that way
Sierra Siegfried eventually you will overcome this, and believe me, only good memories will come back. Be strong my man!

Would like but it's at 69.
Amazing piece of art! Why the great singers are dying so young?

When Faith Hill sings this, I don’t believe her. When I hear Janis, I believe it.
Faith Hill is not in the same category. She should have known better.
You can feel the sorrow in her voice for sure...
The best I've heard this week
The voice of all voices.Love Janice Joplin songs!
I recall Melissa E sang this at the Grammy years ago, She did a great job. I think Janis's sister is still living. I was an infant then.
Brushing up on this song because we're doing a cover of it in a community choir I'm in. Ironically, I outlived Janis Joplin last month.
The WHOAHHHHH is out of this world

Let's give it back.
Now she's "Brandingwine".
