Great video you have here (and not just because of the models). The photos from your Leica lenses look terrific, I can never afford them, but they look amazing none the less. The Nikon 105mm 2.5 ais at 8:04 are exquisite. No wonder it was once considered the greatest camera lens ever made. Keep up the great work.

The magic in the Afghan Girl portrait was not due to lens, but the lighting and then the Kodachrome ( RIP) transparency that he used to shoot with. One decent lens is just about the same as another, although the 105 F2.5 does have amazing rendering. Good video, sir.

It seemed to me that the magic in the Afghan Girl portrait was due to the subject, specifically her eyes.

Out of many 70/80s lenses my top 3
Sigma 21-35mm for astrophotography and landscape
Pentax 50mm SMC 50mm f2 for ultra sharp product photos and you-tube videos
Makinon 200mm f3.3 . Ridiculously bad wide open, but for reasons I can not put into words, its so much fun to use.

Nice vid Matt...a man after my own heart! An investment in glass always repays us. On the Nikon "manual focus subject detection" - completely right; that's a brilliant feature that they could + should port across the whole range of Z cameras.

Top of the list, the Minolta Rokkor RF 250 f5.6 mirror lens.
I have been lucky to shoot with many high quality lens
but this on just seems to hit the nail on the head for me.
What can I say, I'm a long lens type of guy.
    Be lucky stay safe.

Hi Matt I really enjoy this episode with those old glass with character and shooting open. I really appreciate if you can tell me where did you buy your green shirt. Thanks again and happy new year!

Excellent work on the 105. The first photo I ever sold was shot with that lens, and I use it often. 100mmish optics really hit a nice sweet spot, and that particular one is a classic - and not too hard to find too!

Fun video Matt! My favorite vintage lenses are:
    Helios 40c 85mm f1.5
    Nikkor 105mm f2.5
    Voightlander 35mm f1.4 Nokton
Cosina 55mm f1.2 MC (which has crazy bubble bokeh)
    Nikkor 50mm f1.2 AIS.
And at this point the 1995 Canon 135mm f2L adapted to a Sony.

Matt, what you call the Nippon Kogaku is actually the 50mm f1.4 Nikkor-S. Note the letter S is a designation for the number of elements in the lens, this is far from an S Line lens. Fact is that Nikon's 50mm f1.4 lenses were never very sharp until the 50mm f1.4 AF-S G lens and the newest Z mount 50mm f1.4 is the finest 50mm f1.4 Nikon has ever produced. I will also note that the inner diameter of the non AI aperture rings will not clear the outer diameter of the mounting flange on the FTZ adapters. Why Nikon chose to make this flange 1mm larger in diameter than those featured on every F mount Nikon camera I do not understand. A small bit of good news is that a good Machinist can remove this mounting flange and use a Lathe to modify the mounting flange diameter.

I'm wondering why the heck has Nikon not made an FTZ adapter with a screwdriver motor like Sony has? So users who have vintage Nikkor lenses can adopt the new mirrorless system more.

They want to sell those plasticky Z lenses. Today's Nikon is a far cry from the Nikon of the 60s, 70s and even the 80s where they designed most of their AIS lenses with a 52mm filter thread so just one set of filters and accessories could be used for the whole range of lenses.

hi Matt, This looks like you had fun shooting with your retro lenses 🙂
I am going to be in HK at the end of March, is there anywhere you would suggest to go looking for a secondhand F or Z mount 35mm fast lens?
    Cheers mate

Thanks for the video Matt. Have you tried the TTArtisan 50mm f/0.95 on the X2D? Was wondering about sensor coverage and performance. Might be a fun lens to take out now and then for certain situations, even if I have to crop a bit if there is major sensor blockage.

    • @mattgranger
      @mattgranger  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

It wont give full coverage but some. I dont use manual lenses as the X2D sensor readout speed is too slow for consistent results

Really interesting video -- thanks for this. As to the Leica lens "look", I agree that the claims are overblown. I used several L mount lenses and I found virtually no difference between the quality of images taken with those lenses mounted on an SL2 camera body versus Z mount lenses mounted on the Nikon Z9 (zoom 2.8 trio and various F1.8 Z mount primes). And while I no longer have it, I found nothing did a better job than the F mount 200mm F2.
Had you had a chance to check out the TechArt adaptor? If I am not mistaken, it allows autofocus using manual lenses because it can physically move the entire lens relative to the sensor.

Love the old version of the 50 1.4 Summilux ASPH. Not perfect, but almost perfect for me, different rendering from the 35 1.4 wich is a very nice lens as well. Unlike you I couldn't justify keeping the 35. Still not sure if I miss it but it financed my Z6iii + 50 1.8 - wich is a very nice combo.

Hi Matt, thanx for a fun video. Especially love the BW shots. Some of my favourite f-mounts are the old 180 f2.8 AFD, 135 F2 DC, as well as 85 F1.4 AFD. Oh yeah, and that very versatile 60 f2.8 AFD macro.
If you ever get your hands on the new Voigtländer 40 f1.2 Z, give it a go - it has a dual character, wide open it renders like vintage glass, stop down to >F2 and it starts behaving like a modern Z-lens. Amazing fun lens, and quite small and light.
Btw, I fully agree that Nikon needs to include the manual eye-detect on the a8/9, it makes catching the eye at F1 a lot easier. So easy to get fully sharp shots with my Voigtländer 50 F1 on the Zf, another matter on the z8/9.

Not vintage, the Otus 85mm has kept me away from AF lenses in general. I agree, having the AF tracking work with the MF lenses on the Z8/Z9 would be a huge help.

the first three weren't really vintage - and despite the pricetag, not very impressive... the 105 /2.5 is the standout ... but I knew that - I have one
