I absolutely enjoy parkour without filming. Sometimes, I'm having so much fun during a session that I even forget to film anything, then I get home and become slightly disappointed that I didn't capture any of it. That usually happens when I'm training with friends. Sometimes, while solo training, I'll drill stuff that I don't think is worth filming and I'll just enjoy the training.
I think I'm lucky enough to just enjoy filmmaking in general, so the fact that I do parkour overlaps with that in a satisfying way. I've never been that concerned with the IG/TH-cam likes and views. I kinda just enjoy creating the videos and having them as memories to look back on

I appreciate Tom's angst about the 'USA stick meme'

I think the crux of the topic is gaining satisfaction from the internal vs external. If you have learned to be happy and love parkour in an internal sense, doing it for yourself and appreciating your movement, then it doesn't matter if you get clips or impress people with your movement. I think the performative aspect is certainly there for a lot of us, but sometimes hitting a challenge for the first time will feel so much better than the clip of doing so. I think the performative side of parkour isn't a bad thing, it just needs to come after finding the happiness and fulfilment internally.
It's real easy to see in kids when they want to just look cool versus when they really want something. They don't understand these concepts yet but they are so transparent about it through their actions. If you can learn to be happy without the performative, then clips are just an added bonus on top.

I appreciate Tom's earnestness when talking about enjoying filming vs doing. If I'm honest with myself I might enjoy watching my clips more than I enjoy doing them. I watch my stuff over and over and it feels amazing (like it did when I first did it, but now I can really spend time to take in the whole moment, whereas during training, I am a little distracted with the task of survival haha.
I would absolutely still love and practice parkour without a camera, but you're right that it would profoundly alter the experience. I think a lot of what drives me in pk is collecting achievements, and so recording is a pretty integral part of the process.

Maybe a greater cultural thing and not a unique to parkour thing?

Feels like Jason Paul shoulda been a discussion point in the trad-vs-dance/contemporary chat! And Mathias Mather, it's definitely something about those germans ...

Interesting talk! Maybe we should look at it in the way that parkour is not divided but diverse?
