    Thanks for the video. A lot of people in the comments are judging your description, but I don't know why. I don't peruse TH-cam for videos to dislike. Thanks again for the good visual and explanation!

    A lot of the generic cat converters do not have a directional arrow on the unit itself, so when you have a converter with no arrow, how do you know what is the inlet and outlet. mine has a oxygen sensor fitting but has a plug because the sensor is upstream (on the exhaust manifold itself). It's an OBD 1 cat converter and would like to know if there is a direction or not. Both inlet and outlet are 2" openings.

    Great video mate. And what are the belts surrounding the ceramic cores, they look like some kind of insulation/anti-vibration part for centering the ceramic cores. What are those belts made of? Are they ceramic too? Thank you.

      @Ketenkrad96 ปีที่แล้ว

      Old question, but in case someone else wants to know. I work in exhaust systems, the mat is usually fiberglass or similar heat resistant "cloth" like material and sometimes include silver flakes for special fueled cars, and it´s only function is to hold the ceramic in place so it doesn´t get damaged by movement, It´s hella brittle, some of the newer cats especially E5+ also have the mat as a sort of heat shield. But 90% of it´s function is just to hold the crap in place.

    When you have dual exhaust on an old Chevy big block with pipes 3 inches in dia. and an 850cfm holley carb getting about 8 mpg, it would need 2 cats for each bank? There's so much raw fuel coming out to make anyone's knees buckle. It may well burn through the cat converters on yearly basis with casual driving. A set I've found runs about $400-500. Would they even last very long?

    • @scottmorris4756
      @scottmorris4756 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Donu Duty why would a vehicle have a big carb like that on there in the first place? That big of a carb would throw raw fuel out of it instead of burning it. It makes no sense to me unless the homework has been done by matching the cam, the converter and the rear end for a particular application all that is accomplished is a bunch of noise and a carb that dumps raw gas out the end and poorer performance. I guess it looks and sounds cool

    Good explanation, but your closing statements are incorrect, the fact of the matter is, those plates which the exhaust gets pushed through are going to create resistance of flow whether it be minuscule or a lot. So therefore creating some back pressure, so the engine isn't going to be running as efficient as it would without one. So yea it will create some loss of horsepower because you are restricting the flow of exhaust gases..... And that is why a basic way to create more horsepower is to take your catalytic converter off (which is illegal for road worthy vehicles because of emission standards). And that is why everyone says it robs your car of horsepower.

    • @djmystery7235
      @djmystery7235 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      j0n0j0n0j yes you are correct but this may be very minuscule power or in some cars it actually gives you more low end to mid end power where you will be mainly driving at in the road.

    • @rsar61
      @rsar61 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      j0n0j0n0j he also failed to mention that the smog pump robs horse power

    • @coolbionicle
      @coolbionicle 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      j0n0j0n0j although you are correct. you are forgetting one key fact. the engine is designed to operate most efficiently at that pressure differential. So you might gain a minuscule amount of horsepower, but you will also loose fuel millage in a manner similar to running on a lean fuel mixture.

      If you look at the cross section of the honeycomb it is much much larger than the exhaust tube so the restriction is reduced. In the end your muffler is much more restrictive than a modern converter.

    any change in the temperature of the exhaust gases after is passes through the converter??

    • @joevignolor4u949
      @joevignolor4u949 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Remember that the second substrate essentially mixes oxygen and left over hydrocarbons and burns them inside the converter. The converter's inlet temperature can run at 350F while the outlet part of the converter can run at 600 to 700F. And that's only when the engine management system is working correctly and the hydrocarbon levels coming from the engine are correct and low. If you have a misfiring plug or a bad coil or a bad plug wire and you are throwing raw unburned fuel into the converter continuously that is what will overheat and melt the honeycomb structure. Under those conditions the temperatures inside the converter can soar to over 2,500F. Do that for very long and you can kiss the cat goodbye.

    Could a bad converter cause engine problems

  • @Daveinet
    @Daveinet 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    OK, so I had a Jeep, where the tube from the cat fed into the air cleaner. All was OK, except that the cat produced water. On a cold day, the water would freeze, and the ice would clog the engine. I had to disconnect the tube coming out of the converter during the winter, other wise the engine would die when it was below freezing.

    • @joevignolor4u949

      That is not duct tape wrapped around the substrates. Those are insulators. They keep the heat generated in the substrates from passing into the outside steel shell of the converter.

    • @joevignolor4u949
      @joevignolor4u949 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe the converters were partially plugged. The substrates might have been partially melted. That will create lots of back pressure and reduce horsepower.
