Something Really Bad Happened to My Budgie

- Last Saturday I woke up to Billie half paralyzed, she can't perch and hold her head right at all.
My immediate reaction was obviously to take her to the Vet's, but unfortunately they couldn't give a precise explanation on what's going on.
I've contacted other Vets too that agreed on it most likely being a stroke due to Vitamin B deficiency.
She's given oral Vitamin B daily since then.
Billie is not suffering from a disease, she wants to eat and drink and do things regularly, but she can't because of her neurological condition.
I've had two sleepless nights since Saturday, doing my best to take care of poor little Billie.

Update on Billie as of right now:
She is starting to show signs of improvements, she is doing her best to eat seeds and I'm also feeding her with a syringe throughout the day.
I really hope she'll continue getting stronger and better.

This reminds me of my late Lovebird Tenderheart. He used to do that too, suddenly falling off his perch and at other times his neck would get stuck in weird positions and that eventually lead to him having problems with his equilibrium. He lived all his life with that condition. I did my very best to keep him comfortable and care for him to the best of my ability, and yes, just like Billy, he did improve with proper care and got back to normal whenever that happened to him. Unfortunately the vets we have here only take care of mammals. I called all the clinics and they told me the same thing, which I find very weird, and not exactly fair, but it is what it is. I did my best, and I hope they've improved and expanded their service since then. But under my care, Tenderheart lived for 15 years. Lots of love for your lovely bird Billie, and I hope she gets well soon.
15 years under this condition? God bless you, you made his life much better and easier, you helped him to get the best out of him and cared for him 🤙
My little boy, also a lovebird, lived with seizures for years. My Avian and I did all we could and he lived a full, happy life. He was 14 when he passed. My hearts still broken a decade later, but I know we'll be together again.
Having had budgies my whole life and having cared for them in similar situations this made me tear up a bit. I know the feeling of pain when your budgie is hurting and you cannot help them. I pray that God heals her and that every person in this world who is suffering or in pain is comforted.

Sending positive thoughts your way. As someone else mentioned, I relate to this kind of thing as a bird caretaker and do not deal with it very well at all. Get well soon Billie!

@@Bird-Nuggets I did a quick research what it might be and internet says it might be torticollis (which makes birds' necks bended like this). Or this can be an ataxia.
It's such a shame that vet couldn't come with a diagnosis... Maybe there is a different vet who specializes with birds?

It's really sad. My oldest budgie died last week and looks similar to your budgie. I couldn't do anything to save him.

As someone whose lost a budgie to something similar, I fear it's antaxia. I don't know if it can be treated, didn't work for me atleast. But I really hope Billy gets well. Hold on! Do not give up! Signs of improvement are good news. I hope for tge very best, Billy. Keep rocking!
before I had a green budgie I cared for it but another day it looked somehow depressed and I took him out of feed him, but the next day he moved on it was very sad for me to move on about my budgies death.

Something like this happened to me once. The neighborhood kids knew I had experience with birds, so they brought me 3 baby cardinals that had been abandoned in their bush. I used to breed budgies, so I had an emergency stash of baby bird food. I took them in and set them up in one of my old nesting boxes. I had to feed them every 2 hours. Soon, two of them died. I named the last one "survivor" because he was the last survivor. He lived for a lot longer, but eventually he became blind in one eye because I didn't clean him up properly after feedings. This soon led to the sane problem that Billie has, most likely due to infection. He lived for a while after that, but feeding became very hard. I had no idea how to treat him, and just kept taking care of him until eventually, I woke up and he was dead. I think Billie could have some sort of infection in her ear that's giving her equilibrium problems. Praying for her and you 🙏❤️

She might have knocked her balance censor, usually when this happens a bird can quickly recover in a couple of weeks.

It's terrifying when it happens.
It happened to my 11 years old Lovebird: he looked like he was feeling bad from a bit already, not so energetic as he used to, but we thought it was just because of age. One Sunday, we found him this "half-paralyzed", he couldn't stand anywhere and used to lay on the ground of the cage. We never brought him to a vet since there aren’t good ones here, so I tried to ask and search, and it appeared it was caused by a neurological condition. I remember how he used to rest on me and even trust my caresses, which told the situation was pretty serious, since he never loved my touch. I passed almost every day near him, even to just make him feel safe, because, even if he had a mate, I didn’t want to make him feel lonely nor abandoned (from a human point of view).
Although, as we started giving him vitamins and a medicine for lungs in water, he started feeling definitely better, not as energetic, but lively. He started getting his balance back and was aggressive towards my touch again, which meant he was himself. It felt like he was alive again.
Sadly, the afternoon of the 23th of February I found him dead in the corner of the cage, and because of his stiff pose I think he suffered of a heart attack. I don’t know if it was caused by his age or it was somehow related to this neurological condition, I can just guess, but it felt like a knife in the stomach, especially since he was feeling better.
I hope Billie will feel better and will start living again, the fact that she’s not lonely is already a good help.
