Hi John. What a lovely way to spend a few hours at this time of year. I move onto our local small rivers and streams around now and as you say making memories. It's those memories that keep us coming back. Great video. Keep up the good work.

What could be nicer than giving the centrepin a spin on a lovely little new river, amongst the beautiful autumn colours. No better way to spend a few special hours, raising the spirits and nourishing the soul!!. Thanks for taking us with you John, I always feel uplifted watching you fish and enjoying hearing your thought processes as you work your way down the river, smashing stuff once again, cheers Peter.😁😊🤔

Hi John lovely film , the section other side of road is well worth a visit , church farm section on the HWAS ticket for which you can get a day ticket for £6 from the tackle shop . This also gives you access to another two stretches of the Blackwater ….

Thanks! As always , a joy to watch...and yes, it seems your youth was similar to mine. Rod tied onto the crossbar, bucket dangling from the handle and a small bag with a few hooks, a box of maggots, disgorger and spare floats. And like your start here...minnows with gudgeon as the bonus fish! Happy days, happy memories!

Hi John not long back from a little break with the wife, tucked away in a little log cabin in Snowdonia. I wanted to do a lovely panoramic photo involving the ginger cake that I received a day prior. But the weather put a stop to that absolutely terrible.
Another top class video, John your editing is rather good too. What a beautiful stretch of water, great place to spend a few hours relaxing. Catching a fish or two is a bonus.
Pass on my thanks to Rachel for the cake. I’ve managed to save a piece for work tomorrow. Tight lines pal keep these fabulous videos coming we cannot get enough 🎣🎣🎣🎣

      @themagicoffishing  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Haha! Great to know that you not only received the cake safely but managed to take it on holiday! I once had a similarly wet week in Snowdonia… I also just endured a 4-hour drive back down from Sheffield during which it never stopped raining hard… ☔️ Will be interesting to see if the locks rivers are fishable by next Sunday but I imagine they will be raging through again tonight… 🤞🎣🐟 Rachel is by my side now and has read your lovely comment 👍💙

I have to say John, that was one of my favourite videos, it brought back so many memories for me and it is my most favourite way to fish. I love a roaming approach and when the autumn leaves are out it is so enjoyable and relaxing. What a fantastic stretch of water, even though it wasn’t your most productive session the bonus chub at the end was worth the wait. Loving your photography too, I almost feel like I’m there with you. 🎣🎣🎣

I’m up in Sheffield doing some university open days with my lad this weekend, so it might have to be a bit of time travel next Friday, using a video I filmed back in the warmer months, but I’ll be back river fishing in December I’m sure. Cheers for now 🍻

    Wonderful.
    Fishing at it's purest.
Reminded me of a book given to me many many years ago by David Carl-Forbes. All about small river fishing.
Cannot beat trotting with a centrepin.
Moving water is so therapeutic assisted by a mixed bag of fish.
    Truly magic angling.
    Stay safe and thanks.

Couldn’t agree more! The sounds, the movement, the smells… When it gets cold, you also feel like you’re still in with a chance on moving water - on days when watching a motionless float on a pond could start to feel a bit fruitless. Cheers for now 🍻🎣

You like it so much you’ve got it in your TH-cam channel name 😄👍 I don’t do enough of it but at this time of year you’ve often got to find the fish haven’t you, rather than expecting to land on them first time. Thanks for another great comment and I’m enjoying your vids too. I don’t do a lot of piking but might have to give it another whirl at some point this winter, when many other fish won’t feed.

    • @RoveWithTom
      @RoveWithTom 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

Thats true 🤣. Yeah, I’m still trying to find a good chub spot, but going out exploring different stretches trying to find them never disappoints. You end up catching different species which opens up more ideas for fishing. Like you said, theres so many around our area to go to, its just putting the time in.
Thanks, John. Let me know if you want to do a bit of pike fishing, the place i go to on my last video really is a magical place and it’s local!

Great to hear from you, Rob - I was reading about the trotting tuition before I decided to head over there for the first time (and I’d had some long running encouragement from Trev, our fisheries manager). Sounds like a great idea - especially with so many anglers getting their first taste of fishing on commercials these days and often feeling a bit unsure about how to tackle rivers. I bet you could have given me a brilliant guided session if I’d have bumped into you! Hopefully we’ll have the pleasure at some point and you are undoubtedly right about it being a top river 👍🎣🐟

Hello again John. If you have a Farnham Book and haven't already visited, take a look at the Wey in Elstead. It blew my mind some 30 years ago and totally changed my perspective on angling. Back then you could almost guarantee 3 or 4 (4lb+) quality chub and there was a sandy bend which was almost always good for a solitary 1lb plus roach. I never caught more than 1 roach but even in low clear conditions, that one fish was almost always obliging.

Hello there! Do you know what, I’m not sure if I have been there or not?! If you are talking about the stretch known as Somerset Bridge then I HAVE fished it, but only once, and it was in high summer. An absolute scorcher and I’ve been saving that video up my sleeve for some time… But Trevor the fisheries manger told me it can fish well in winter when all the weed growth has gone so I do hope to get back there before long! I’d love to in fact 🎣

Here’s hoping you get out again before long my friend 🤞 Yep, I was amazed to walk up to the top and not see anyone, although the bailif did walk past and then I saw a couple of fellow worm danglers when I was nearly back at the car. It’s a lovely spot although I was also gazing across all the famous carp lakes with their myriad little islands and kept wondering might be swimming about in them. Carp up 50 and cats up to 90 being one example!! 🤯😮🐟 A LOT of angling history in that area and I only wish I could fish every day…

Hi John, just found your channel, great videos. As a match angler myself April til October I can’t wait to do this kind of fishing here in Sheffield on the Don once the weather starts turning colder. Various spots catching grayling and odd trout with minimal gear. Using same setup as you!have a look at the drake blue and green floats. Just picked some up and they look the part. Won’t be going tomorrow as snow now melting and the river already started rising. Keep up the great work

Many thank James and welcome to the club! I’m actually in Sheffield today and Storm Bert is making it pretty brutal out there, after we woke to a bit more snow. Been taking my lad round Sheffield Uni and sadly no opportunities to fish this time, but I’m not sure I’d want to be in these conditions 😄 I hope you find plenty more to enjoy on the channel and if you’ve not come across it before you might enjoy the book, as the first half is set in Sheffield. But not here to flog you anything! Cheers for now 🍻🎣🐟

Yes I’ve been watching the previous films. Enjoyed the Trent barbel ones. Something I’ve never tried but definitely fancy trying. Not even been on the Trent since mid 90s🤣
I’m new to centrepin fishing but definitely try using a heavier float 👍you’ll find the line just peels off the reel. I’m fishing similar depths 2-3’and a 2 or 2.5 gram float (Dave Harrell no 1 alloy Avon) but those Drake green floats do look good

Thanks, I’m hoping it’s always that quiet as I’d love to get back this winter! I did see a couple of other friendly angers near the end, but it was mega peaceful. As you will know, FAS has a reputation amongst some for having busy waters but aside from the really famous and popular ones I’ve found it to be anything but crowded at many of the venues. Still in my first year of course and I marvel at the fact I’ve still got so much to try - and another load of options where I’ve had one exploratory fish and am still to get back! My mind boggles…

@@themagicoffishingI found the same. I didn’t really fish the Yately waters so I assume they are the busy ones. I had many great days fishing on Stockbridge Lake where there was only a couple of people on. And that’s a fantastic lake. I may rejoin next year after I finish my year on the Hartley Whitney Waters. Either that or I’ll join Godalming Angling again, I love that club.

That’s it then, Mike - I’m going to have to get back there with a light lure rod at some point! I don’t do a lot but it might be exciting in such shallow water. I couldn’t believe how many goes at my float that little jack had 🤯

    Hi John,
I really enjoy your videos, they remind me that fishing is really for enjoyment and relaxation.
As a long time user of centrepins reels I cannot help picking up the noise when you retrieve line.
It sounds to me as there is too much end float on the spindle, the drum can move very slightly in and out on the spindle (centrepin)
This can be adjusted by turning the tiny screw in the centre boss of the reel clockwise.
Not too tight as this would lock up the reel, but set just riht the reel will spin perfectly and not chatter.

Thanks John - lovely comment 🙏 I think you’re right about the reel and one or two others have made a similar point, so I’m sending it back to Youngs and they are going to give it a service! It might mean I can’t use it for a while but it’s worth looking after these things that should last a lifetime 👍 Thanks for explaining what I would need to do if it happens again in the future. Cheers for now, John

Another great video. I can only hope that the reel noise is magified by your microphone. All my 'pins are silent, and they are definitely not JW Young's finest.

I’ve had a while now. -at least a decade. - and it’s probably due a service! Silent on the trot but less so on the retrieve…

Fish the next stretch from the car park to the top boundary......more chub and the odd barbel known in this stretch ( behind Summer Pit).

Thanks Steve! I ran out of time to try that but the bailiff also said that was where the bigger dace hang out as well. Can’t wait to get back. I fished Summer Pit in the spring (my ‘spicy maggots’ vid on the channel) so I can vaguely picture where you mean. Cheers 🍻

Must have run around a lake or two whilst at Blackwater barracks , back in the early 90s.
Never had a chance to fish back then..😢

I find it incredibly hard when I’m spending time near water and haven’t got the time or ability to try the fishing! Work trips or family holidays where I’ve not got any gear for example. Thanks for your service by the way (as well as your comment) 🙏

The Blackwater is my local river and I have fished it since I was 5 years old. It really is a special river

That’s brilliant to hear, especially that you still rate it highly and enjoy it after many years of fishing on there. I hope I might get to know it a bit better myself and I’m already getting tips about other areas or stretches. That’s the only trouble with rivers (well, aside from all the modern issues with sewage discharges etc) - there can be so much water to go at it’s hard to know where to start or to feel you will ever get to know it well! But with a bit of roving you do get a quick sense of how special it might be 👍🎣🐟

i See quite a few videos with good quality video anglers using a centrepin reel for trotting a float. My big question - is there a particular advantage or is it a bit of an affectation?. My guess is less than 5% of anglers even possess a centrepin so are you perpetuating a nostalgic myth which doesn't resonate with many new anglers??

For me, Jim, I’ve never been one to want to tell other anglers what they should or shouldn’t be using and I think it’s completely down to personal preference. I see plenty of passionate debate online from others who make claims like a centre pin is the only way to fish, or they can’t be beaten for trotting, etc, but you’ll not hear me making those claims and I was raised fishing fixed spools (and cheap as chips ones until I could afford to buy my own!). I’d say when you’ve got pace in a river and there’s no need to cast any distance then a pin gives me much better control and I can let the pressure of the water peel line as quickly or slowly as I want, particularly if using a heavier float pattern. Then it’s a joy to use for me. The disadvantages are only the slight limitations on casting distance and the slower retrieve versus the cranking power of a fixed spool, but on a small river like that I also love the direct contact you feel with any fish hooked. I’m perfectly happy using a fixed spool on slower rivers or where I want to fish further out like with a waggler for example. Cheers

    Attack?

Did you see the bit where I catch the decent chub and then continue to fish the run above the bridge? I had a jack pike repeatedly attacking the handmade float when I retrieved it at the end of each trot down. I even managed to ‘hook’ it briefly, after it rolled over on the mainline:
