He was, as you say, super problematic in how he views women, but he was so bold and smooth talking that it honestly WAS sexy imho. I think part of the draw for this book is the fact that it explores problematic, taboo stuff wrt sex, but that also makes it super divisive (as shown by the Goodreads reviews). Clearly the marketability you noticed in it couldn't save it from controversy.
Doesn't seem like such a bad month. I love that you were able to go into Franzen despite misgivings and still appreciate the writing. He's never let me down yet and I think Crossroads is the best thing he's done so far. It's more focused, but the snark is turned up to 11.
horrified by your denunciation of joy williams (a genius) ! her short stories are really where it's at if you're at all curious and wanna give her another go. definitely esoteric, enigmatic, etc. i suggest her second collection of stories, escapes!
i don’t know why but i always thought the cover of harrow was a witch’s hat? i just noticed that it’s a horse lol i genuinely believed it was a book about witches

Oh CJ I’m so happy you liked Franzen 😍 one of my favorite author! This year I read The correction, Freedom and Purity and you can totally see a path of growth and development in his writing, even though The correction is still my favorite. Now I can’t wait to pick up Crossroads 😎

I read the corrections almost 20 years ago (👵) and it was a five star read. Freedom was a four. Why? I don't remember lol I never read Purity. How to be alone was awesome, but the 27th city (or whatever it was called) was a no. I have crossroads waiting for me, but I haven't cracked it open yet.

I don't know much about the Franzen controversy, but I gather that he has recently been tacitly rehabilitated because a lot of people who declared him the enemy for what he once said about social media dynamics nowadays have to grudgingly agree with him. 😁 I'd like to try him, but none of his settings or concepts sounds so interesting that I would want to read 600 pages about it. Then again, of course a good writer can make anything interesting…
I actually have no clue what the controversy about Franzen is, apart from the Oprah thing. And I couldn't really see what this was about, because if she would have dissed his book, it would have been for his own disadvantage. Did I miss something here? What I know is, that he seems to be a man of strong opinions, but if he actually did harm to someone, someone has to tell me, please.
