this game should make the car just though the block and building, because when you create 100 cars , it will always ask you to point although you point out to teach A car, than B car ask....
Being a veteran of Factorio, to me, underground pipes was just this fancy connector you placed and it magically took care of everything. So it had not in my wildest dreams occured to me that this is how you would go about making underground pipes in COI. But of course! How else would you do it? It also makes sense that you should not be able to connect anything to the pipe without digging it out again. What else are all those diggers that litter our city streets doing whenever something needs fixing?! It just goes to show that in many respects, COI is actually a pretty realistic game when it comes to these things. It also makes complete sense that you shouldn't be able to dump a load of dirt on top of an open conveyor belt and expect it to still work.
@JDPlays or an actual tunnel that you have a ceiling so belts won't be buried deep alive ... and vehicles can also go through. How exciting would it be
This game is about planning soil and loose objects and displace em well so i really hope that they fix the broken pipe issue without making it easier to lay down the pipes. I like the idea of having to escavate first.
Filling with dirt lets the grass grow back over top giving a nice clean look. I do similar when dumping in the ocean to form new land. Dump waste, slag, rock and so but one level lower than the surrounding land. Then level out that last step with dirt only and the grass will grow back over the dirt hiding your trash pile.
I just played around with it a little, and you can actually just make them even with the terrain if you're willing to do a little more work. Have your excavators dig 1 layer down, lay your pipes, then fill it in, then you don't have little hills everywhere.
@@JoshuaKA02 Looks like you're half right, at least based on a really quick test I did. I buried a pipe 1 layer down and plopped a storage right on top of it, no problem. I tried laying another pipe across, and it destroyed the underground pipe. Not conclusive, like I said, just a quick test, but seems to be some limits
@@Kyle-mo7hx It may become a thing further in development. We can hope, anyway. I've got a few thousand more hours of play-time left in me, so no complaints here either way.
@@JoshuaKA02 Same man, this is the best game I've played in a while. I've done a bunch more tests though and although it's just my opinion, this is what I found. pipes seem to be the main thing that causes the underground pipes to have a problem, buildings and conveyers didn't seem to give me a problem. Digging down 4 levels seemed to do the trick. The ramp seems to be the main problem, laying pipe on top of the underground pipe seemed to be no problem, but when you laid it on top of the underground pipe that was coming up to surface level, that was the big problem.
Roads would be very easy to implement. Just make asphalt a recipe(probably oil+sand+crushed rock) in one of the factories and then spread it with dump trucks just like any other material. If they can give each type of soil/rock, etc., its own properties that affect trucks that drive over it, they could give trucks driving on asphalt a speed bonus.
Yeah that digging and resealing is just waaaay to much time faffing about waiting for trucks and excavators to do their thing. Besides, my base constantly evolves anyway so at some points I would have to dig the pipes up again to make needed adjustments. Better to stick to ground pipes and use vehicle ramps/bridges when needed.
A bit of backfill is a lot cheaper than a bridge. Thanks for the vid explaining this. I think you're the first to make a proper video. I've seen posts talking about this, but never explaining the process. I thought it would be too much of a nuisance, but I see how both methods could be very useful.
The secret of buried pipe is that they have done several patches in the last month or so to specifically address the issues with them, including collapsing other buried pipes if you upgrade a buried pipe.
@@JDPlays After 30 years of commercial plumbing I was stoked to see the possibility. I bought COI a few days after it went to early access. I tried everything I could and found it so problematic I gave up and never tried again so I wasn't sure how well the patches had worked. I just know they were trying to address these issues. After reaching end game I simply realized there is literally no worthwhile reason to bury any pipes. On a side note, when I first started trying I tested a buried conveyor belt too and it freaking worked. By the time I got to where I was really trying to install them, something has changed I guess because they never worked again. I had a storage with an outlet belt that went into a single layer deep ditch and ran a short distance then circled around to the inlet of the same storage and it freaking worked after I buried it and placed goods in the storage, no problem at all.
Underground pipes are honestly a pain. It takes a lot of time and effort just to dig up the ground and then you need to deal with the pipes breaking. The pipes can break if you dig down as well... the safest way I found is to remove one layer at a time instead of digging straight to the level they were placed. You can't upgrade the pipes without digging them up... you can't build above the pipes because sometimes it breaks.... and you can't bury pipe balancers for w/e reason! To make it easier to find the pipes I backfilled all the holes with sand. If you can deal with all the hassles than they work really well. I ran an entire network of underground pipes throughout my entire map. Water, steam, oil, diesel, fuel gas, etc. Whenever I needed to do a hookup I just dug up the ground and connected. Also, I kept holes in the ground and used pipe balancers to keep the water and steam system constantly rebalanced.
What we need are sewer systems, reinforced concrete tunnels and better bridges. But for now I play this like Factorio with robots that cant fly. I have gotten into grid builds with busses that go over ditches, which to me are better than building bridges over the busses.
What about placing undergroung pipes in planning mode? It's not very realistic, but let's say I want to make a trench, place a pipe in planning mode, fill in the trench and only later build the pipe? Cannot test it myself now but I assume it might work similarly to upgrade.
Just remember your control tower can be anywhere on the map. I tend to have one extra tower not dedicated to mining that I use remove random piles or fill random holes with selected materials.

true, but we must test the belt to confirm, maybe the devs will add 'shielded' belts we can run underground in the future? never know!

I do the same, except for under the houses, those i want ON trash! lol

I haven’t tried yet, but I heard the buried pipes might disconnect if you put anything above them unless they’re down more.

hmm ok 4 levels thats far enough away that 2 pipes couldn't normally raise and lower and reach one another, hmm ill keep this in mind!

Bitumen could be a byproduct of oil (as it is IRL)
What a quality guide

i agree! maybe super long term project like a max upgrade aqueduct makes sense, but anything short of that sounds like a pain!

Yes they are more stable now, but still have a number of flaws and 'bugs' like building pipes over pipes still gives major issues.

In short, the better planner you are, the better it is to use underground pipes, got it.
yep, rebuilding sucks, but i know on my map due to lack of space im going to end up rebuilding everything sooner or later
This is great. Love the idea of underground pipes. Thanks to you i have to redo my whole colony 😅😂
no problem mate!

I agree, longer bridges and being able to build a service tunnel for running pipes and belts would be a great addition to the game!

Might be good to store steam. Dig a whole, snake a pipe tightly into it then fill the whole and use the pipe to store steam.
Dumb question...what are the additional white boxes that are displayed?
oh they are diffrent tower digging/dumping areas, i used them to pre fill in any areas with any loose material
For the update2 upgrading underground pipes works without unburying them.
How deep must you dig for the pipe to be laid and being covered levelled at the surrounding surface?
Mate, buy me flowers before you show me stuff this good.
For some reason i can't select what materials i can drop in a free dumping zone without a control tower
you dont have to build the control tower, just put blueprint of it, change what you want to dump and delete the blueprint
Click the truck icon top left and you can select the materials like you would with a control tower.
Just remember your control tower can be anywhere on the map. I tend to have one extra tower not dedicated to mining that I use remove random piles or fill random holes with selected materials.
My biggest reason for not burying pipes is that when you upgrade the buried pipes, the ground above them caves in....
The only way i would use underground pipes is if they are level 3, no more upgrades ever!
