I find it hilarious that a TTS program made for a game about how difficult it would be to live on the moon has seen more musical success than a lot of actual vocaloids. Thanks NASA.
This thing was technically an UTAU from the start. It supported settings such as pitch and volume natively. You could recreate this entire song from the Moonbase Alpha chat.
I love the moonbase alpha voice genuinely I love it more than any vocaloid Something about it so melancholy and robotic yet so expressive in such a strange way that I cannot resist
this gives me such an interesting feeling I imagine an AI gaining sentience, but instead of the usual turning against humans, that it instead learns the feelings of humans happiness, joy, sadness, pain, despair all of it and this cover feels like the AI learning such a specific emotion like the anxiety and depression that the girl in the original MV of Lagtrain felt it learns to live
A robot learning that actually no, it is not infinite. For as much as humans pass on, so does the previous functions they had. Processes not passed on, some features not truly future proofed. Even then still learning not all upgrades are worth the jump forwards, corrupted what systems were once in place into pure obsolescence. The process learns something the most human, Fear. Fear of losing the past, Fear of not being enough for the future, Fear of not keeping pace with the present.

The DECtalk voice gives this really high energy, almost desperate and frantic sound to the vocals that I really like, the chorus especially feels like it’s being belted out.
Does Paul have a recommended range…? It’s pretty easy to get a deeper voice like Harry (other DECtalk voice) and I suppose you could conflate all of them together, the higher ones like Kit too. Paul is the face of DECtalk anyways.
2:45 this is SO good. The way the vocals end and the song is perfectly represented by the beautiful mathematics of the geometry, combined with the way the song is synced up with the visuals, is absolutely mesmerizing. It hits the part of your brain in the same way that putting the last piece of a puzzle does. It just FITS
This sounds unironically fantastic. The TTS turns a good song on its side and it sounds totally wild and artificial but super nostalgic and comforting, like an old Speak and Spell just HAD to fucking sing this song and vibe out.
Hey! DECtalk>Speak and Spell any day! Gosh, Speak and Spell is the old losing to the new(er)! DECtalk even natively supported choosing the pitch and duration of syllables and had some vibrato! And besides, to me DECtalk is more intelligible than some toy any day! >:( *angy DECtalk fan noises, plox ignore lol*
This video and song make me painfully nostalgic and I have ZERO idea why. I've never heard the original song, I've never watched the films used in the video, I've never played Moonbase Alpha (legit had to look up what it was). But something about the vocals and visuals just hits me. Did go check out the original Logtrain and loved it, but the vocals in this cover hit me with nostalgia where the original's don't. Btw I love the dissonance created later in the song. Its on the perfect edge of being unsettling and melodic. Maybe its making me think of vocaloid songs back in the V1 days?
It's the harmonizations in this cover mixed with the 70s geometry film mixed with tts voice sounds like an old AI in emotional pain, so much that their monotone voice is straining to contain it all
The somewhat complicated geometric visuals in the background along with the vhs (thankfully not horror styled) visuals makes the audio feel weirdly fitting. This could easily have been a visual parody, as well, where it's just the astronauts but traced over the original animation and yet something about this feels like it's actually interesting. This shouldn't sound this good but then again we are in a strange time. Also, I feel like there are subtle details in the visuals like the spirals circling onto the screen to the chorus. They overlap and, perhaps circumstantially, create a symbol like the radioactive hazard sign. Considering the theme of mathematics in the video and the topic of moonbase Alpha being about...well, space and science I almost feel like there's something eerily fitting about that. It creates a strange and subtle melancholy to see the rapid movement of shapes that either line up perfectly or just barely don't line up at all. Something is off about it, visually, and yet that same complexity and abstraction fits this cover strangely well.
Imagine someone doing this in the DECtalk program itself lmao. Outside of the editing, I can see this singing being possible in it. It's surprisingly versatile, if you have the patience to work with it for long.
Words cannot describe how well the visuals pair with the song. Not kidding, it HITS HARDER than an ANVIL TO THE FACE at the drop. It's also nice to see that the moonbase alpha remixes are holding up well, even in these trying times. Nice work on the cover 😤👍

0:43 that vibrato at the end gets me, its almost like that one video where the forst ever singing voice sings daisy daisy, but instead he goes "fuck this" and sings this instead
Man, I’ve been sitting on this one for a few weeks listening to it time and time again and I keep having mixed feelings on it. It’s an amazing cover, the amount of work that went into it is something I can’t fathom (unless UTAU programs are easier than I think). Where it shines is in the verses, the inflection and tone is really well done for the most part. Where it falls short for me is where you used the voice to try and sing the melody parts, such as from 0:03-0:09 and 0:37-0:49. It feels like it takes away from the underlying song, and can be a bit harsh at times. What gets me is that this could still be considered a Moonbase Alpha cover, despite none of the usual MA memes seeping in (aeiou, John Madden), which makes me think this cover was made to be taken seriously than as a long and well-made joke (huge kudos for doing the whole song, too). So the lack of any MA references kinda takes away from it being an MA cover, but only if the song is framed as a MA meme/cover. It could entirely just be that it‘s using a vocal software that just happens to be the same voice as in MA. Anyway I’ve rambled enough and I’m hoping this needlessly long comment never sees the light of day
