Drew Barrymore's performance in "Scream" was Oscar-worthy in my opinion. The way she transcends from playful to creeped-out to utterly terrified - all in the course of 12 minutes - is remarkable.

She does, many years later, say that the role was amazing and she gave credit to Kubrick; the abuse was terrible but it made the movie feel that much more impactful and real. Which reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock and how he treated Tippi Hedren, the blond bombshell of The Birds. She also dropped out of the movie industry; a mixture of the abuse she suffered on set at the hands of Alfred Hitchcock but also because he blacklisted her so no one would hire her because she rebuked his sexual advances on her. Hitchcock was an amazing director but a piece of shit of a human being.

Some of them were also tied to her and of course actually attacking her. And I don't mean a couple, there were crates full. Very traumatic. She even called it the worst week of her life. During filming he made multiple sexual advances. She declined. She says he tried to control who she saw, what she ate, and everything else in between, even having people follow her. Other actors around her said it was hard to watch. They did make Marnie together too, where he became even more possessive and controlling. She wanted out of her contract but as she was a new actress she was scared it'd ruin her career. Eventually it was too much, she wanted to cut ties. He continued to keep her in contract for the next couple of years, meaning that she couldn't get any work. I don't know if I've missed anything but it was truly an abusive relationship.

I mean I guess it's just because people react in fear in many different ways besides screaming, and I think that's kinda where the horror trope annoys me, it's always screaming when in reality when a person is under that much pressure, fear and has a will to survive it isn't always just screaming y'know? Some people scream, cry, pass-out, freeze in place, sh*t or p*ss their pants so it's just different, but I agree it is one of the realest screams especially if you didn't know what was gonna go down in that scene.
@@CyberCypress Basically, the story is that the director - Stanley Kubrick - and Jack Nicholson planned to chase her around the set with the axe without her knowledge. They just told her that Jack was going crazy in the scene and he was going to chase after her. She had no idea the axe was coming and so when she saw that blade cut through the door, that was genuine fear. They did a lot of things like that to her while filming The Shining and often made her do multiple takes even when she really needed a break. Jack would also stay in character and terrorize her at the behest of Kubrick just to get "better reactions" out of her while filming. The whole experience messed her up pretty badly. I believe that was her last film role and she suffered a severe mental breakdown because of it.
Vera Farmiga’s screams in The Conjuring are partially responsible for how terrifying those movies are. I remember sitting in the theater during both movies and getting scared, unnerved, etc by her screaming. It’s just so piercing and loud. You can hear the genuine fear in it.
When he talked about drew Barrymore being “in the moment” i don’t know if he knows this but when they were shooting the movie they had roger Jackson (voice of ghost face) separated from the cast so nobody knew what he looked like until filming wrapped and in this scene he was actually outside watching the scene through a monitor and it was raining when they filmed it Oh I forgot to mention it was Drew’s idea not to meet him because she and Wes probably thought that the scariest killer is the one that you don’t what he looks like and they decided to keep him hidden for the filming of every movie Ps: sorry if I spoke too long
To add on, I remember reading somewhere to keep Drew in that emotional state the director would read her, an animal lover, stories about animal abuse from newspaper clippings.

I really appreciate her performance especially in this scene. She represents the complete opposite of Nicholson's character...she is innocent, naive, and vulnerable. In a way she represents the audience which is important because it's such a small cast. We needed to identify with at least one character.

Seeing as most women actually ARE killed by their partners or people they know more often than not, her reactions seemed pretty reasonable to me! I also learned after watching another TH-cam video on the behind the scenes of the Shining that Kubrick used an 18mm lens to film the whole thing, including the close-up shots. This distorted the actor's faces in subtle yet unsettling ways. So Duvall actually looks way more 'bug-eyed' in this film than she did in real life.

Shelley's Wendy is and always will be my favorite final girl, deserves so much more recognition. When I watch that scene, all I can see is the horror and realization in her petrified eyes that her husband is completely lost, and she's in the most dangerous situation she'll ever be in in her life.
Shelley Duvall's reactions were actually pretty damn perfect - having been in a situation with relentless emotional and physical stress myself, this kind of unhinged terror is pretty damn on point. And that last scream? I can’t stop watching it. Absolutely perfect.

Troll 2 is one of the best bad horror movies ever. The acting is so stilted that his "oh my gaaaawwwwwd" probably isn't even in the top ten worst line deliveries. Of course, it didn't help that the script was written by someone who didn't speak English natively and rejected any attempts from the cast to fix the unnatural dialogue. So it's hysterically funny if you like bad movies.
Yeah Drew's acting was very realistic and the way she huddles herself as if she's uncomfortable and too paranoid to move around the house because she doesn't know where the killer is but she knows he can see her alone in this huge house in the middle of no where at night. That's psychologically terrifying. Also I love the car scene on Scream 2 it was so intense.
The main actress in “Midsommar” had amazingly and terrifying screams/cries when she found out about what her sister did to her and her family was very realistic and horrifying. Also, the JAWS screaming was epic!
I'm disappointed they didn't include Toni Collette's scream in Hereditary (spoiler alert!!) when she finds her decapitated daughter's body. It was absolutely chilling and believable.
And Florence Pugh in Midsommar when she (spoiler) finds out her sister has killed their parents and killed herself. The sound of grief is the most moving.

Lmao me too - as a kid, I wanted to be an actress and would practice my horror movie screaming CONSTANTLY - along with the “oh no I’ve fallen down and have to keep my feet running and I still can’t get up again...” reaction. I’m pretty sure my voice is too low now to get a really good scream - I used to revel in the ear-splitting quality of my screams - like how they’d make everything sound distorted and wavy for a second? And now...yeah I don’t think my voice can reach that high anymore lmao
I loved that scene from The Shining... it was perfect to me. It was like she was terrified, confused, on the edge of insanity becuase her husband was actually trying to kill her and not knowing why, and realizing that she had to kill him, knowing she had to protect her son at all cost... all those emotions wrapped up in that one moment. Just perfect.
So...nothing about Emily Blunt in A Quiet Place? Because that one gives me chills. She is giving birth but can't scream because she knows the monster is near. It is only after the monster is distracted by fireworks that she is able to release a bone chilling scream of both pain and horror.

Those two screams are definitely some of the best, most heartwrenching screams I've ever seen in film. I feel like they must've pulled from some trauma in their lives because they were so realistic!

I loved Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween. Even though it was a bit corny at times haha I thought her screams were great. The shock of falling down the stairs, when she’s running across the lawn to get away. I feel that’s how anyone in the real world would act. Screaming whatever you could to get help, not caring what pitch you were lol and when she’s in the closet, she plays the terror of it all so well. My favorite horror flick. ❤️
I've been missing Amos Diggery (don't know the actors name so quick) when he cries/screams for Cedric and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) when she gets tortured by Bellatrix. Great work in my opinion! :)
Agreed! Every performance I’ve seen from her are incredible! One of my favorite screams from her besides in the conjuring films is in the Orphan towards the end when she slaps the girl......anyway check it out.
The thing about the Jaws scream is that the actress was not told exactly what was going to be done and was given no preparation as to when she'd start being pulled under, so much of her performance actually is genuine fear as opposed to just acting.
I understand how directors try to get real reactions but causing someone to actually feel fear especially if you're doing multiple takes is extremely harmful to someone. Why hire an actor and not just let them act?
Vera Farmiga's screams are phenomenal. I can't even describe how chilling and unnerving it is to see her performances. It doesn't matter how many times i've seen it i always get goosebumps and i feel her emotions through every inch of my body and soul when she's on screen. That's how brilliant she is. I think Shelley Duvall's performance is one of my favorites. It's not just the terror of a man with an axe coming to get you. It's the terror of that man being the only person you had who you loved and trusted through utter isolation. It's the acknowledgement that that man hurt you, hurt your child, and will now kill you both. And in the past, you couldn't stop him, but now push comes to shove, and you have no choice. You may have to do the unthinkable. Or die trying. But even more than the screaming, or the man with the axe, when I think about what really scares me about that scene, it's Shelley. Her performance. The image of her, and her face, standing there with that knife. Good god. I close my eyes, that's what I see. I've never seen someone so taken over with fear or desperation or disbelief at their situation, but I can never forget her performance. It's almost symbolic. But I don't want to go on a tangent. Then, we have Vera Farmiga. I think she truly is in a league of her own. Operatic is a wonderful way to describe her performances. If you haven't seen Bates Motel, and you enjoyed the Psycho movies, the tv series is a real treat.

I was looking for this comment!! She's one of my favorite actors of all time. And her scream isn't just in Twin Peaks, I watched Vampires last year and she still had that horrifying, incredible scream. There's one point where one of the other actors straight up swore during one of her screams, and I don't think it was scripted lol

Sarah Conner’s screams as her flesh is literally melting away from her bones in Judgement Day has always haunted me. Also the little boy from Doctor Sleep is probably one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen.

As someone who had someone break in their house and was scared for their life as they heard people coming up the stairs, when they came to the door and shout at me to get in I went from silent to whispering on the phone to in tears sobbing much like in the shining, in my personal opinion I feel Shelley did a phenomenal job
For the jaws one, the actors was really screaming, because that harness moving her around broke her pelvis, she wasn’t acting that was real. Even when she’s screaming it hurts she was trying to let them know, and they didn’t know until the scene was done with
Drew Barrymore in Scream was SO good. And I believe a large part of it is how they did things behind the scenes. The actors never met the voice of Ghostface until they were done filming so they could keep the mystery and fear alive. He also kept reminding Barrymore of real life animal cruelty news stories to keep her emotional during the scene. A little mean, but it was totally worth it cause the actors were able to really react to everything going on.
her acting in Jaws is so good there's this precise emotional progression form confusion to shock to terror to physical pain to desperate bargaining with god happening in-between the screams all in the space of 1-2 minutes. for a stuntwoman she really nailed it.

Two of the most blood curdling screams to me are Tina in "Nightmare on Elm Street" & Annie from Halloween (2007) Those were too very genuine & terrifying screams 😱😱😱

Seeing as most women actually ARE killed by their partners or people they know more often than not, her reactions seemed pretty reasonable to me! I also learned after watching another TH-cam video on the behind the scenes of the Shining that Kubrick used an 18mm lens to film the whole thing, including the close-up shots. This distorted the actor's faces in subtle yet unsettling ways. So Duvall actually looks way more 'bug-eyed' in this film than she did in real life.

Shelley's Wendy is and always will be my favorite final girl, deserves so much more recognition. When I watch that scene, all I can see is the horror and realization in her petrified eyes that her husband is completely lost, and she's in the most dangerous situation she'll ever be in in her life.
Shelley Duvall's reactions were actually pretty damn perfect - having been in a situation with relentless emotional and physical stress myself, this kind of unhinged terror is pretty damn on point. And that last scream? I can’t stop watching it. Absolutely perfect.
Shelly Duvall's face seeing the head of the axe properly is an incredible piece of acting. It's so raw and real and awful.

Made her cry for up to 12 hours a day.He isolated her on set, telling the rest of the crew not to have sympathy for her and to ignore her. She was so stressed she started loosing hair. Theres probably more but that's all I know

Troll 2 is one of the best bad horror movies ever. The acting is so stilted that his "oh my gaaaawwwwwd" probably isn't even in the top ten worst line deliveries. Of course, it didn't help that the script was written by someone who didn't speak English natively and rejected any attempts from the cast to fix the unnatural dialogue. So it's hysterically funny if you like bad movies.

Yeah Drew's acting was very realistic and the way she huddles herself as if she's uncomfortable and too paranoid to move around the house because she doesn't know where the killer is but she knows he can see her alone in this huge house in the middle of no where at night. That's psychologically terrifying. Also I love the car scene on Scream 2 it was so intense.

Lmao me too - as a kid, I wanted to be an actress and would practice my horror movie screaming CONSTANTLY - along with the “oh no I’ve fallen down and have to keep my feet running and I still can’t get up again...” reaction. I’m pretty sure my voice is too low now to get a really good scream - I used to revel in the ear-splitting quality of my screams - like how they’d make everything sound distorted and wavy for a second? And now...yeah I don’t think my voice can reach that high anymore lmao

It was like she was terrified, confused, on the edge of insanity becuase her husband was actually trying to kill her and not knowing why, and realizing that she had to kill him, knowing she had to protect her son at all cost... all those emotions wrapped up in that one moment. Just perfect.
So...nothing about Emily Blunt in A Quiet Place? Because that one gives me chills. She is giving birth but can't scream because she knows the monster is near. It is only after the monster is distracted by fireworks that she is able to release a bone chilling scream of both pain and horror.

I loved Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween. Even though it was a bit corny at times haha I thought her screams were great. The shock of falling down the stairs, when she’s running across the lawn to get away. I feel that’s how anyone in the real world would act. Screaming whatever you could to get help, not caring what pitch you were lol and when she’s in the closet, she plays the terror of it all so well. My favorite horror flick. ❤️

Vera Farmiga's scream seriously made me emotional.
The thing about the Jaws scream is that the actress was not told exactly what was going to be done and was given no preparation as to when she'd start being pulled under, so much of her performance actually is genuine fear as opposed to just acting.
I understand how directors try to get real reactions but causing someone to actually feel fear especially if you're doing multiple takes is extremely harmful to someone. Why hire an actor and not just let them act?

Neve Campbell's scream from The Craft during the skin grafting procedure always hits me in the gut.
I think Shelley Duvall's performance is one of my favorites.
It's not just the terror of a man with an axe coming to get you. It's the terror of that man being the only person you had who you loved and trusted through utter isolation. It's the acknowledgement that that man hurt you, hurt your child, and will now kill you both. And in the past, you couldn't stop him, but now push comes to shove, and you have no choice. You may have to do the unthinkable. Or die trying.
But even more than the screaming, or the man with the axe, when I think about what really scares me about that scene, it's Shelley. Her performance. The image of her, and her face, standing there with that knife. Good god. I close my eyes, that's what I see. I've never seen someone so taken over with fear or desperation or disbelief at their situation, but I can never forget her performance. It's almost symbolic. But I don't want to go on a tangent.
Then, we have Vera Farmiga. I think she truly is in a league of her own. Operatic is a wonderful way to describe her performances. If you haven't seen Bates Motel, and you enjoyed the Psycho movies, the tv series is a real treat.
I'm really disappointed that you guys didn't mention Laura Palmer's scream from Twin Peaks. I think it's easily the best scream ever. Utterly terrifying.

Drew Barrymore in Scream was SO good. And I believe a large part of it is how they did things behind the scenes. The actors never met the voice of Ghostface until they were done filming so they could keep the mystery and fear alive. He also kept reminding Barrymore of real life animal cruelty news stories to keep her emotional during the scene. A little mean, but it was totally worth it cause the actors were able to really react to everything going on.

her acting in Jaws is so good there's this precise emotional progression form confusion to shock to terror to physical pain to desperate bargaining with god happening in-between the screams all in the space of 1-2 minutes. for a stuntwoman she really nailed it.
