Extraordinary music maturity for a 15yo. Other than the opening bars, which were poor, she really understands this work. I feel sure it will be breath taking in a few years. She conveys a good presto 'leggiero molto' which is rare for immature performers. Problems with the huge rythmic swings and finishing off the flourish after the 'tutta forza' (a problem for me too, but I am age 46!). Highly impressive. Next time with Horowitz' cadenza, maybe?

Even with mature players the middle part with parallel voices is just physically difficult to be in tune. There will always be a missed note in the upper registers, and not because for any lack of skill, but because of the sheer momentum and physical exhaustion. I doubt Lizt could even play that without missing a note or two.

But I bought a new keyboard 2 months ago (out of the $ from my 1st stimulus check (haven't seen that 2nd one yet they're talking about)), and I have been practicing again. I've spent more time working on Liszt's "Sonata in B minor" since I was a little more polished on that piece anyway. But I have spent some time on "Mephisto Waltz" also, but due to what I explained I am unfortunately not really that much further along on it than when I posted my other comment last year. Those huge jumps with the right hand during the second half of the piece are still quite difficult for me, but I'll keep working on it. I'm getting closer getting those arpeggios sounding alright. But overall, still have a ways to go before I dare perform it (which may not be something anyone may be able to do until the COVID19 outbreak blows over)

I agree in everything (except the remark ref. 74 comments, lol). Strictly personal, and it's only me: I have a VERY low opinion about piano contests. Outside being an opportunity for playing through repertoire and meet somebody who might become interested in one of the participants they mean very little. Take the last contest she was in, from all the Big Winners of past years NO ONE has made it to world class. Just to avoid starting an argument: Listen to what Gary Graffman and Emanuel Ax (who was one of her teachers at Julliard) has to say about this matter, in interviews here on TH-cam. They are more of an authority than I am. As I pointed out in other comments, I hope that Tiff will make it through the critical transition from child prodigy to grown-up artist. She deserves the best, as she's a hard working kid who loves what she's doing.

I think she needs a different kind of showmanship for this piece. This was meant for concert performance, not savoring every note like a Chopin nocturne. It makes an audible difference in the feeling of the music.
This isn't really a criticism though. She plays it brilliantly. Just not the interpretation I imagine.

I agree ! I feel that she tend to lean towards chopin nocturne style of deeply in thoughts kind of showmanship 90% of the time. Maybe, she can be a little more solemn and her facial expression can show more of the excitement/joy/scary/angry/depress/playful etc... instead of always sticking to the same face... Just some food for thoughts.... great fan of hers no hate involved :) For Liszt I think you have to have that almost possessed kind of body language. (Just my own opinion)

Yes, I agree, although this rendition was quite impressive. Tiffany is at her BEST playing Chopin. Right now (2019) she is transitioning from "Wunderkind" (child prodigy) to grown-up artist; a critical step in her life and career. I truly hope that she will sail as successfully through this stage of her life as Martha Argerich and Yuja Wang did in their time.

To add to the pile of other "useless stuff", here is a copy of the printed music for the following video th-cam.com/video/uSD5lYcyxhY/w-d-xo.html I hope you can find the time to at least look at these pages. Thanks. John R. Haws (JRH)

Good question. Liszt is one of the composers whose 'bravura' works only gain from being played fast and with lots of temperament. Actually this is more of a scherzo - phantasie. Unlike Ravel, whose "La Valse" is played way too fast by most pianists. Tiffany played Ravel's "La Valse" just right, tempo-vise.
