Hey, thanks for sharing your impressions about Ford Corcel. I was still a kid when my father bought a Ford Belina (which was a Corcel "station wagon" version). It was a green 72 standard model. When he bought a 76 in good shape years later, I already had my licence and I use to drive it a lot!
The greatest advantadge of Ford Corcel was the confort, as the VW models didn't have front McPherson suspension like it. Also, they were economic and reliable.
When I got married in 89, we traveled 700km in a white Corcel II 78 to our honeymoon on the beach. Even with a limited powered engine, it was a nice car to travel.
His engine was continuously improved and later renamed as Ford CHT (1.6 liter), becoming standard for the last Corcel II and his successor, the Ford Escort made in Brazil. Ford CHT engines are still praised nowadays as extremelly reliable and economic.

@@martins767 WOW ! That’s straight up quality memories. Gosh, how cool would it have been to be traveling those early Brazilian roads in a Corcel Station Wagon, very cool. As a kid, we had a 1986 Subaru GL that we did road trips all over south United States in. It was mostly desert. We drove through and some high alpine forest. I really thank you for sharing your story with me.

My grandpa had one of these, Corcel 1972 If not mistaken. After that, he bought the Corcel "2", They were quite good vehicles, and very confortable. Quite nippy also, given it's power. And I love the design of the Corcel 2, and many of us here liked it also, even if you look at it for too long, you can start to see the weirdness of the project. Still, I think the Corcel 2 was the best design Ford had in the 80's. You seem to have forgot about the Corcel 2 GT, with the 1.6L engine. And also the Wagon and Pickup versions, of which the pickup lasted until 1997!!! (with the VW AP Engine)

I had one Corcel GT for 10 years, and I loved it.
But it has to be said OEMs did coupes in Brazil not because they looked “sporty”, but because Brazilians distrusted rear doors at the time. Thus the Opel Reckord 2 doors (known as Opala), the Opel Ascona 2 doors (known as Monza), the Santana 2 doors, the Ford Del Rey 2 doors (derived from the four doors, itself inspired on the Ford Granada).
Ironically, Taxi fleets appreciated the convenience of the 4 doors.

An interesting point in the history of Corcel is that engineer Luc Henry de Ferran took over the transfer and adaptation process necessary to become a Ford product, but in addition to being a Ford engineer he was the father of Gil de Ferran, a racing driver who was two-time Champ Car Champion (2000/2001) and also won the 2003 Indianapolis 500.
Other Willys products that became Ford products were the Jeep, the Rural (originally the Jeep Willys Station Wagon) and the Jeep Pick-up that would be renamed the Ford F-75.

I just watched your video about Rural, this was the car that took me from the maternity ward until I was 12/13 years old. My father had a dark blue and white one that he loved (he even adapted a mechanism to make the glass on the rear passenger window, which slid horizontally, start to move up and down) when it was really rusty he took it to an auto repair shop. for a complete renovation and bought another one at a police auction to be a parts donor. When it was completely disassembled on trestles, without an engine, transmission or wheels, a fire in the nearby bush reached it and was a total loss. The solution was to renovate the one that belonged to the police (as it was all black, I, as a child, called it Pretinha) and it was resurfaced with a green and white paint job and was used for a few more years. Detail, both had a 4-cylinder engine - more economical, better for dual use, work and family transport.

This "french based" (Renault 12) Ford Corcel car, started its production in late 68 and had a station wagon (state, break, anything else...) version called Belina since 69 and a pick up version, called Pampa since 82. This lasts could have a 4x4 version, with the miserable Renault Cleon/Fonte based engine and with (I think a sh it of) gear box WITHOUT a central diff and with different gear ratios on the axles diffs... 🙄
Worked like a crystal. It ONLY could be used to get out of mud... Belina's (and the Del Rey) faded out in early 91 and Pampa was produced til 97. In the middle 80's the Autolatina (Ford and VW) joint venture gave another engine option to Del Rey, Belina and Pampa. The 8V 1.8 L EA-827 (here know by "AP1800") and the VW gearbox. This engine option had never a 4x4 tranny. The only auto trans option was for Del Rey (and Belina) with the miserable Renault based engine (here "stroked" to 1.6 L, another cylinder head and other minor changes and called Ford CHT). This auto trans had only 3 gears and was awful.
This family of Fords had long live. They were not fast or "sporty". But they were very reliable. I have a 81 Corcel 2 LDO (that I installed a MegaSquirt fuel injection on it) and a 89 Belina 1.8 Ghia (fuel injected, turbo'ed and so).
Till the first gen, Ford used the american-like design of it (Reassembling the Maverick/Pinto). Since the second gen, they choose the european-like design, based on Ford Granada... That's the "mess" with it's design of Corcel 2.

Willys-Overland do Brasil's original plan was to launch the first-generation Renault 12 in Brazil as a replacement for the Renault Dauphine/Gordini that had already been manufactured in the country since 1959, but the acquisition of the automaker by Ford do Brasil in 1967, briefly suspended the M project (jointly developed between Renault and Willys) until Ford redesigned it and gave it a new name. Cara...
    Saudações do Brasil!! 🤝🏼🇧🇷

Both using the same type of V4 engine. The Renault R12 of course and the 15 and 17 coupes. I'm not sure, but I think also the R18 that replaced the R12 was built the same way. So from my automotive background, this was a unique set up that I had not been so familiar with other than Alfa Romeo GTV. This is really a gold mine of information that I would like to. Thank you for hope you enjoy the upcoming videos and have a pleasant day.

@@LuDamen It's a bit different here in Sweden of course. Alfasud was a magnificent car as long as its bodywork didn't disintegrate due to rust 😥 I had two of them. Saab 96 was of course more common here. It's always differences in which cars that are common in different countries. The reason for the comparably large amount of American cars in Sweden are all the imports by enthusiasts.

VW Passat/Dasher, the furst generations of Audi 80 and Audi 100, VW Quantum/Santana etc. all have that exactly same configuration. It isn't something exotic at all.

I mean, it's somewhat behind the wheels, underneath the vehicle, on the VW. The Corcel clearly shows it's more on the front of the vehicle/ engine bay

You are absolutely right for the Brazilian market, but in North America this is quite a unique set up not very popular with automotive enthusiasts. Thank you for your information on these strange Audis. I’ve never seen them. Hope you have a great day and come back for the next video.

So much nonsense!! In a closed market that only favored factories making carts in Brazil, what did you expect? Talk about the mistakes made by the American Ford when it forced Ford Brazil to choose the "lying ox" Maverick, ignoring the German Taunus of 1971. Or out of pure "greed", making "half-baked" adaptations to the obsolete 6-cylinder Willys engine from the 1930s and using it in the Maverick, making the car a gas guzzler and as slow as a turtle. The "M" project based on the Renault 12 that gave rise to the Corcel was a success among Brazilian consumers who, until then, only had access to the carts from the 1950s that the "smart" foreign factories came to make here. And the restyling only of the body of the Corcel called "2" was due to Ford's greed in not producing the efficient German engines here.

It’s really unfortunate about the Brazilian market. The weather and roads here are so amazing that it’s really a tragedy that the markets were not opened like they were in North America. I would like to thank you for your time and your comment and hope you enjoy the next video.
