RIVER SURFING ENGLISH GARDEN MUNICH

The Eisbach (German, 'ice brook') is a small, 2-kilometre-long (1.2 mi), man-made river in Munich. It flows through the park known as the Englischer Garten, and is a side arm of the Isar River. A man-made wave has been created on one section, which is popular among river surfers.
In Munich, there is an enormous public park called the English Garden. At the southern edge of the park, a man made river called The Eisbach flows at around 5 m per second, depending on rainfall. About fifteen years ago, a few of the locals noticed that every now and then, a wave about 4 feet high would appear. The wave used to be a fickle one, though. Disappearing for months at a time, it was the right amount of water flowing through the river and the build up of silt. Now surfers in the area have found a way to stabilize the river’s flow, and in turn, the wave as well. Since then, the wave in The Eisbach has turned into a bonafide surfing destination.
