One Thing for certain That Fairy Tail always got right was character development and backstory when implemented plus the multilayered over lapping plot that converges at the end. You can tell the writer did put a lot of thought and heart into the series creation. The Story of Fairy Tail has Heart.
I have to admit Lucy's backstory is surprisingly dark just like Erza's was and they're both cheerful characters(erza is a lot more stern, glitzy, and steadfast though) Lucy is more bright and cheery
