    There are many Aces. But only one Red Baron. 100 years later and everyone still knows of him

    An officer and a true gentleman.
    There was an account that he was going to have a pilot under his squadron (Jasta) court Martialed and eventually ordered shot,if found guilty, for shooting down an English pilot who had ran out of ammunition inspite of having given the traditional distress wing sign.
    Baron von Richthofen was said to be raging red in anger for having The German military's Honor stained and swore he would personally ask the Kaiser for the German pilot's death penalty.
    Unfortunately,the Red Baron was killed before the military court Martial proceedings could take place.
    The pilot in question was Herman Goering..who would later be Hitler's head of the Luftwaffe

      Thank you for this bit of Historical fact. I knew that Manfred had gotten furious at his brother,Lothar,for shooting a pilot that had crashed and was running for his life,but didnt know about Goerings cruel act.I do believe it though. Sadly,he became the last commander of Jagdgeschwader 1. (Jasta 1)

      Too bad they did not execute Goering, the deaths that would have been saved

    Did anyone else fall in love w/ the very Late Baron after looking @ these pictures? Darn, I just did. ... A 100 years Ago and in another lifetime perhaps? Deja Vu?

      I'm not surprised to hear you feel this way. Just recently I had an opportunity to view restored movies of Manfred in lighter moments. These films completely transformed my image of him. Still photos always portray him as stern, professional, "the bloody red baron". In fact, around his men and family he seemed relaxed and unafraid to have fun, even at his own expense. Seemed like the kind of person I'd like to know. Nothing like what popular history as made of simply a brave young man doing his duty. Indeed he was a hero and just happened to be very good at what he did, just like our own heroes at the time. After watching these films I thought to myself what a stupid stupid waste of humanity WW I was. Simply a waste. Nothing was gained save the seeds of WW II.

      avion195 He became more stern after he had been wounded in the head.It is well documented that he pulled away from people and was not very open after that. His own Mother noted a difference in him.If you can,you should read her memoirs.She talks about Manfred quite a lot.

    Manfred von Richthofen (Red Baron) was very fearless of his enemies, and fearless of dying according to his last chase into enemies territories with his red tri-plane. He made a mistake by going against the rules ! Awesome Flying Ace man of World War 1. Maybe he had a death wish ?? Tschüss ! R.I.P Buddy ! Hero !

    Ultimately he was ruthlessly used for German military propaganda but also a brave individual who like so many souls paid the ultimate price while the true instigators lived out their full... Lives. Such is the price of sheep when the true individual fades from... sight...

    “ ich hatt’ einen kameraden “
    Paint my air craft a bright red, as I do not wish to hide from the enemy, but rather say here I am come and get it.
    I did not join the service to collect cheese and eggs.
    Settle in Moritz, I shall return to play later.
    Attack Attack Attack! Stay on my wing. Perhaps today we shall preform a little school for aerial combat tactics.

      Sorry, obviously the photo doesn't exist any more. Here you will find another link showing him. You also find several TH-cam videos under his name. May I ask you something? Your beautiful video shows a pic at 2:24. I once saw that picture on the Internet but I haven't found it since then. As I collect pictures of him I should be very glad if you help me to find it again. Would that be possible? But now the promised link to a photo of Christian von Richthofen.

      ps: Of the 12 years of madness unleashed by Hitler & Himmler, only a few escape my anger. One is Corporal Grommel of the 27th Panzer-Grenadier Regiment,(Killed at Nikopol on the Don in 1943). A kindly pacifist dragged into a war he hated....Another is Adolf Gallant. He hated Hitler. He fought with the same honor as Richthofen! He hated the war too.

    • @ChimeraAZ
      @ChimeraAZ  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      acerb45666555
      :
      Your point being? A lot of people that were in the NSDAP/Nazi party,didnt like the war. Many many of them.
      It doesnt matter who escaped "your anger". You werent even alive then to be angry. Who are you to judge anyway? I hate it when people who werent there read ugly crap about someone and believe it totally without reservation.
      I have a name for them: Sheep.
      And just what do you know about Adolf Galland? He was no pacifist. He was a killer too.They all were,up there in the skies. Even Manfred. They had a job to do,..kill. They did it well.How about Erich Hartmann? His victories rated right up there with Manfred's. And,since we're dropping names,how about Werner Molders who was a highly respected Pilot and close friend of Adolf Galland's? They all fought with honor too,but in the end,..they were all killers. Whether they hated the war,or they did not is of no issue.I can assure you that no one in the field,or in the air loved it,..except for Manfred von Richthofen. He reveled in it until he was wounded himself. After that his opinion was different about the war.

    • @gilbertdavies
      @gilbertdavies 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChimeraAZ well, old chap, I think that was a good appraisal. Hartmann had 328 victories, I believe, against poorly trained Russians flying lower spec aircraft. MvR was a game hunter, & taking nothing away from him, look at his 80 odd victories.. Mostly out dated poor performers, reconnaissance planes with "rushed through" Brit pilots. From a tech POV, compare a Fokker DR1 with a BE2c, or a FE2d.
      All these guys tried to do their job. Been a better job by far to arm the parliamentary protagonists of both sides, & let them have a crack at each other!.. Siegfried Sassoon had it with his poem line; "He's a cheery Old Chap, said Harry to Jack.. But, he did for them both, with his plan of attack" Poor boys, all of them being some Mothers sons.
      Pilots are members of a world wide club. I've flown with Czechs, Americans, French, German & Greek..we all bent our elbow in the mess/bar after.
