10 Really Useful Signs in British Sign Language (BSL)

- Learn 10 phrases in British Sign Language that can be really useful in everyday conversations.
Many of these signs are often referred to as "multi-channel signs" where you need to show a specific facial expression or lip pattern at the same as as the sign, for example "that's interesting" requires an "ooooh" lip pattern.

"Slower, please" would be a useful addition to "Again, please"
I know how to sign this!! "Slower please" goes like this: you gently stroke your arm with the hand you usually sign with, and then for please you stroke under your chin and bring your hand forward :)

Honestly, I think the most useful sign for me has always been "(Sorry), Could you fingerspell it?" !!
Sooo, would the sign sequence for that be: "Sorry, you fingerspell please?"? I'm very much a begginer and sentance structure is still a mystry to me, even though I know those signs indervidually.

Me and my fiance can now sign 'I'm staying out of it' when my family start arguing in front of us 😅

@@appleplayz651 Hi Maesie. I know you mean well but saying you're sorry that someone is Deaf is usually not a good idea. People who have been Deaf from a young age often regard it as part of their identity, and there are some very strong feelings about it in the Deaf community. It would be a bit like someone saying to you "I'm sorry you are female / male".
@@appleplayz651 Don't be sorry - Deaf people aren't sorry. Rather, I would say to her "Well done, you -- for making the effort to learn your Nephew's language and help him be included !!"

I find them all useful but I think “again, sorry” is a life saver because I’m only just learning and probably won’t pick up everything.
This is awesome thanks so much, I knew the alphabet and when I was in retail learnt the phrases I most used. Helps so much, its such a shame basic BLS isn't taught in schools or preschools. Then no one would be left behind with communication
Yes, because many of us hearing people will probably lose hearing due to aging eventually

Whilst taking care of my (hearing)toddler grandson i realised that signing was a great way for him to tell me what he wanted before he had full command of speech. E.g.. I'm hungry /I'm thirsty/I'm tired.... I was amazed at how relaxed it made him & he could say "I love you" before he could talk. Thankyou for this as I'd like to learn more. The BEST of it was that we learned together, so although I may not have got it perfectly, he understood ! I believe it gave us a real advantage as we could "talk" when others struggled to understand what little ones needed.
When my daughter was little, she was getting frustrated and kept making circles on the palm of her hand with the index finger of the other hand. I realised she wanted to go into the garden and had made up her own sign for it!

I love these videos. I am self teaching myself to be inclusive in salon for my deaf clients. With covid, lip reading has become very difficult for the deaf community and I really want to do my part to make for a more comfortable experience in salon.
These videos are brilliant. I am slowly piecing phrases together to allow for consultation and basic chit chat with my clients who are deaf. I really love it but more importantly so do they ❤️

Perfect all correct. Very well presented. It ought in schools so children learn sign language to add to writing, reading, listening, speaking all 5 instead of 4 what hearing people do. Deaf people love sign language and don’t understand why hearing people do not use sign language.
Found your channel just recently ❤. As an American (or Yank, as you Brits say), I thoroughly enjoy learning BSL and BSL alphabet. I use ASL (American Sign Language) with family members (8 of them) & friends, but am so happy I can "try my hand" (pun intended) at a different sign language. Thanks for making your vids so easy to use - showing your hands, fingers, body & face from diffetent angles is AWESOME !! Hope you will make MORE vids soon !! Well done, you !! Cheers from 🇺🇸!!!
I’m learning because we have some deaf ladies who come to my bingo and as the caller it’s great to know some basic signs…..the ones I use the most are ‘hello how are you’, ‘ thank you’ and I also show them the letter F when there is a false call…I think it’s really brave of them to come to the bingo. Thanks for all the uploads it’s really helping me out😎👍
im going to try and use these expressions in my everyday life altho i dont know anyone that is deaf (including me). its just a useful skill for now :)
I guess, I'm not sure if you do it per say however when some people talk they tend to use their hands as well I guess the only difference for you will be that you're actually talking with your hands but in sign language, that's what I do anyway

I think BSL is amazing, as you never know just when you will come across a deaf person/people who you can see need help, and to be able to respond to them would be so very rewarding! Very many thanks indeed 😊

This is the first video of tours that I've come across! I have Level 1 BSL; I took evening classes several years ago, but I haven't had much opportunity to use it as I don't actually know anyone who's Deaf so this is great refresher for me! Thank you, I will be watching a lot more your videos - it's really fantastic to find someone offering helpful BSL signs on TH-cam!
I'm the same I passed level 1 10 yrs ago but I don't get chance to practice much I also did evening classes so your channels it helps me remember signs and the ones I forgot thanks so much

Your signs are so clear & I love how you make it clear what lip shape/sound you should be making along with signs (as I’m hearing but learning BSL & I just end up saying the words I’m signing :/ lol)

i enjoy the expressions/phrases rather than the single words.. find them a bit more helpful,, and more likely to be used in conversation
again, please. My best friend's parents are deaf and they use BSL while talkng, but they speak very fast. "could you repeat that slower" would be a nice addition!

Hi Dan! I'm a dog trainer who is (very slowly) learning bsl because everyone should know it. I use signs a lot in my work (as dogs "run on" body language and learn it many times faster then the spoken word). So it would be amazing if I knew the bsl for things we frequently work on- I have found a few things here and there- but not a complete list. Please make a vid so I can learn so we can teach our customers and their dogs ! We'd need: sit, down, stand, leave (ignore thing), stop! walk next to me ( nicely, slowly) faster, slower, wait/ stay. come here, take, find, fetch/ bring, go to bed, walk backwards (get out of the/ harm's way), spin, roll over, paw, crawl, through (my legs lols).... they're the most common- turns out it's a reasonably big list! thank you in advance!

I dont' know anyone who is deaf, but find SL interesting. I've always wondered if the mouth is part of SL as you see expressions (and what i think are accidental corresponding noises) on telly shows but it never seems to correlate (or be repeated consistently in scripting and i'm too slow to notice) - now i know!
You are so clear with displaying how to do the signs!! It is actually a relief because I am always puzzling over certain movements that others make when they are attempting to teach it. It makes me feel a bit wary of trying it out in case I haven't understood how it is meant to be. Your way of teaching gives immediate confidence in giving them a go. And you think about what we might actually need to say. It is great!! Thank you so much. Just starting to learn again after years of being despondent. I am not deaf but I think it is a mesmerising and beautiful way of speaking!!
Thank you for doing these videos. I am a hearing person, but a few years ago I lost my speech forever, so I have been following your videos to learn to sign. At 70 yrs old, it takes me time to learn, but getting there slowly, I am also teaching my granchildren as I learn.
I am profoundly deaf and now have to learn sign language so thank you.😊

I've been subscribed to you for many years and love this channel. I'm a hearing person who has taken a huge interest in BSL and makaton and this channel has been an excellent resource for improving my vocabulary. I'm hoping to complete my BSL level 1 soon but can't seem to sign confidently on camera so wish me luck.

all sign are good to refresh knowledge. Some signs are new to me (eg " I am keeping out of it" " let me know"), are useful as I am involved with " deaf cafe" at the church. now using Zoom meetings. I knew some BSL in my previous work but now stepping up. also it is useful to learn other regional differences. eg numbers I have struggled with. thank for your time and effort it is much appreciated.

Thank you for this, it's very helpful. I like the way you break the signs down, most of your signs are very clear. I'm a fast finger speller, but much slower at reading other's finger spelling. Some finger spelling to practice on would be brilliant.

They are all Really Useful, particularly with the lip shape explanation. Thanks so much. I only found your videos recently and they've renewed my enthusiasm to learn BSL. I also really appreciate the clear explanation of the handshapes and seeing a sideways view when its important. If it's not cheeky to ask, a video showing the BSL equivalent of homonyms and/or false friends would be truly appreciated eg today I came across a sign for 'share' that seems to be the same as 'unsure' ?

I am trying to teach my greyhound some basic commands in sign language. Makes sense for a sighthound. This is a thing. I’d love to see a video that went through: watch me, sit, down, leave it, close, wait, let’s go. I think I’ve found them but sometimes its less clear out of context. Thank you so much for sharing. I hope it doesn’t offend that I am working with a canine friend rather than a human!

I've been 'learning' sign language for ever..that doesn't mean I know much, or can even sign back, but I've always been fascinated with sign language, and even encouraged/taught my youngest daughter, who asked her teacher if they could learn in school to no avail. I struggle with flexibility in my hands, but I'm going to persevere, even if to be able to understand it.
Thanks Dan, I qualified at level 2 in 2016,but if you don't use it you loose it, I'm volunteering with the deaf at stables, so good to be able to communicate, and obviously keep building on it.. 👋

Thank you!! This is great! I learnt and used BSL as a child in the 80s. I have used it and practiced since but trying to refresh as a doctor with the masks so I can better support Deaf patients. I missed out on the adult expressions or newer phrases we use more now so this is very useful. Let me know or let you all know especially I loved! I'm also intrigued by the ones related to the internet as obviously it didn't exist LOL so "comments below" also new. And I saw subscribe as a link type sign on another video. Agree with others that phrases are really helpful - more please!! :-)

This is so well and clearly explained. I am just starting to learn sign language. I am hoping I will be able to just learn on TH-cam! I would just like to be able to sign at least the basics if I needed to. I do wonder tho, does it matter what hand you use for things? Like, can it be right or left handed? Does it change the meaning at all?
