Rust effects with Chipping Medium & Crackle Paint (no airbrush)

  • I wanted to create a worn painted surface, where paint has chipped off and rust shows underneath. Using chipping medium and crackle paint did the trick. These techniques can be used on any miniatures - I chose a chest from the Nighthaunt endless spells. No airbrush was used (or harmed) filming this video.

These videos are a collection of my own initial miniature experiences. If you are a beginner or, like me, old and starting out again i hope these videos might be of inspirational use.

    I love Amaranth as a color, and as a word. Comes from the plant, a type of grass or grain, with very vibrant blossoms. Got my variant from AK, use it all the time.

    I bought some Vallejo Chipping Medium purely because it popped up on Taobao (Chinese online shopping) when I was looking for something else and now I can see that I have a whole load of other shopping to do. I love your delivery - very dry.

    That chipping medium is neat. I am starting to really appreciate Vallejo’s mediums and technical paints. Great video!

      Thank you Kyle, much appreciated. Yeah, I was kind of surprised myself at the result, and how nice it looks. The chipping medium is fun, a bit of a nice surprise every time some paint chips away. And the crackle medium is great - I’ve started to use it on bases as “cracked earth” and other things - so very versatile (as long as your after cracks)

      Thank you Jirhon, it was a fun project. The crackle paint has seen a lot of use since but need to try the chipping medium more. I want to try it on armor but the Nighthaunt I’ve been painting recently are kind of not well equipped in that department.

      In all seriousness though, I feel like some of the Scale75 paints don’t have appropriate alternatives in different brands that are the same tone with the similar vibrancy. I feel like the reds and browns and blues are quite unique

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joshpickering5039 I agree. Also, the specific hue's seem to be worked out in a manner so that they all kind of work next to each other. Regardless of colour choice.

  • @zhhrah

    Just cover the whole surface with chipping medium. That way you don’t need to remember where the places are with the chipping medium and more often than not you change your mind when you’ve put on the colour anyway or find some new spots that would look great when it was chipped but then you can’t add more chipping medium to it.

    If you use an airbrush atoll the cleaning brushes for the airbrush is great for chipping and remember to seal each layer with varnish if your wanting to create layers of chipping like your gun metal and green wouldn't have done that if you sealed your work layer by layer

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just recently got into the airbrush thing. Sort of every now and again... I’ve borrowed a friends airbrush but still don’t have a proper work area that is airbrush friendly... and so I haven’t got the propper cleaners. But I definitely see what you mean. Small metallic “brushes” right? I can see how that would work real nice.

  • @EMTBAFV
    @EMTBAFV 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If the crackle paint is anything like the diorama effect crackle it'll still keep flaking over the next 3 or 4 hours and works better without the hairdryer let it take its natural course to being rapid hot blasted

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! You quite on point. I nowadays leave it as an “overnight” thing. Cracklepaint then go to bed and enjoy the result in the morning.

  • @8BitJesus
    @8BitJesus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is old now but using a hairdryer is apparently recommended for crackle paint, it can stop it cracking or something?

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know!? I'll have do do some research. If that's the case it would be cool, to get smaller cracks.

    • @8BitJesus
      @8BitJesus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@52Miniatures not sure if you know, but a thinner layer of crackle medium apparently gives you small cracks, a thicker layer = big cracks.
      I have some of the GSW paint, I have a photo somewhere. I’m pretty sure I tried that on the base but it’s been a few weeks now. I’ll find the photo, to be safe

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@8BitJesus Yes! That I have noticed. Not sure how thin its possible do go. It would be nice to get really small stuff for miniature painting purposes and not just for the traditional terrain use.

    Try AKs worn effects they really cracked it when they made that stuff! It my go to all the time now! I have tonnes of chipping fluids sitting from loads companies but the best is AKs worn effects you can create a spotted or faded worn effect and using a slight bit more of the the fluid creates a lovely chipping effect! So I have hing up the hairspray too now haha
