    Don't be so hard on yourself; I think that squared-off tubing makes it look cool. I mean, just the fact that you went ahead and built the thing is impressive as hell. Look at how people are always talking about how they're "gonna" do this or that, well, you actually did it.

    • @crimsun7186

      5 valve trumpets do exist, but not on this configuration. David Hickman has a custom 5 valve Trumpet with 1 rotor and 1 piston. The trumpet is in C. Pressing the 4th valve lowers the pitch by a half step. Pressing the trigger puts the trumpet in D. When you have both down (and they can lock in place as well), you have a Trumpet in Db.

    • @bryanray1235
      @bryanray1235 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @rogermwilcox

    Sorry I missed the opportunity to make a suggestion last week. I would've suggested the 5th and 6th valves do something to compensate for the fact that, when the 4th valve is depressed, all the other valves are out of tune -- a problem that the piccolo trumpet and most other non-compensating 4-valve brass instruments have.

  • @joshandrews8913
    @joshandrews8913 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Very interesting concept here, and as you mentioned I'm sure it's a good stepping stone to doing more of this sort of thing in the future, which I am eager to see. This was a good relatively safe way to test things out. A lot safer than using a couple Bach Strads for a first project hahaha.

    I have a six valve tuba with the fifth valve being a quarter step. I bought it from a guy who pieced it together in his backyard. Other than me, nobody who ever tried it could play it. I found it to be quite a fun instrument, and I played it regularly in a bread quintet for a while. However, over the years it developed so many leaks that even I couldn't make it sound good anymore (and no tech with any dignity would want to work on it lol). It's currently being 'played' by a skeleton that's suspended from my band room ceiling by fishing line. Anyway, based on my experience with under-quality instruments, my recommendation for valve lube for your trumpet is Brasso brass polish. Just put a couple covid masks under the piston vents to keep it from dripping on you 👍

    I've seen a picture of a previous 6 valve cornet. It had 7 separate bells arranged around the player's head. The idea was to have a perfectly tuned length for each ½step addition.

    (Trent Hamilton) I think you should reclassify the old 6-valve trumpet as a percussion instrument and don't even put your breath in it! It kinda sounds like playing on the rim of a snare drum. The newer complete version looks and sounds great and can still be called a brass instrument! Thanks for sharing your instrumental creations with us! Dan!

    I come back to watch this video from time to time, and I always come up with an idea or two for what could have been done with the valves for an ideal setup. First of all, your normal valves should have been the "back three," or the first three that the leadpipe goes into. You use those valves with your right hand as usual. The "first" valve on the other block could be a muted bell with a euphonium style flange to hold the valve down, for continuous muted play. The second valve could be your microtonal valve, which by the way is probably the most interesting part of this concoction to begin with. Western instruments really aren't built with such a thing. As for the sixth valve, that would be your 1+3 combination, for extended range and alternate fingerings. For bonus points, you could manufacture new pistons and make a compensating trumpet using that fourth valve and really make a jack of all trades instrument. Out of all your zany instrument experiments, this one shows the most promise for an actual usable instrument, because I've really yet to see a commercial trumpet with any of the features you created for it, or that I added as well. I'm also glad you found a use for the world's second worst valved soprano instrument.

  • @angelmonge551
    @angelmonge551 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    An interesting thing you could've done with that was have the other 2 valves change the key of the trumpets pitch like a bass trombone. You could have it set to D, Gb, F or even E. That would be kind of interesting to see but they would need to work like triggers rather than valves but since the valves do stick that could also help.

    If you have welding materials or really really good solder, you should get another trumpet and a trombone and make a jazzophone. They're really expensive, so it would probably be better to just make one. They're pretty neat-o.

    Trent, maybe you could do a program explaining why European brass are manufactured to a different pitch, or at least in the past they were, and you have to be careful when buying a used horn not to get one that is pitched higher than 440 A. I bought a horn not knowing better and lengthened the tuning slide, which helped, but the horn never sounded good after that.
