I still think Milan losing this final is one of the great sporting mysteries to this day. That team had done everything to Liverpool we feared and pretty much expected by half time. The third goal by Crespo just summed it all up, it was such a sumptuous finish.
Don't get me wrong, even as a United fan, I was thrilled by Liverpool's comeback, but both of us were beyond lucky to win in '99 and '05. Gerrard's dive for the penalty was pretty "shokken", as Carra would say. A shame football lacks this kind of drama nowadays.
I just wanna point out Baros here. For the 2nd goal he dodged the ball incredibly, a split second too slow it would have bounced off him, 2nd is his backheel for Gerrard. Unsung hero of the night.
It even took a slight deflection off his chest due to surface effect
today its surreal to see two czech players play such a pivotal role in an all time classic like this match is.
Tip of the hat to carragher. He left it all on the field. Incredible clean tackles in the box. And the Jimmy traore save was special too. Classic liverpool match. Digging out the win when all seemed lost.

At least 3 of those penalty kicks should have been repeated because of Dudek. The taker hadn't touched the ball and Dudek was already 1 m in front of the goal line.

If they played this final 10 times, Milan would have won 9. By far the best team on the pitch and in Europe that year. Liverpool achieved nothing short of a miracle with a mediocre team at best

Shevchenko was ballon d’or winner and on fire. As was kaka who was peaking in Milan pre real, which transfer didn’t happen for another 4 years. Gattuso agree and was overrated but still did grunt work well and dovetailed with pirlo. Not sure the relevance of Munich and seem to remember Chelsea beat them in knockout. Alonso became world class but was young then and doubt he’d have got in to Milan’s starting 11. Hamann played his part but was a half time sub and at end of career. Smicer wildly inconsistent and euro 96 was 9 years before and absolutely irrelevant. Even if it was Baros wasn’t in the team then. Garcia had his moments but a journeyman Barca reject. Gerrard The only Liverpool player who would have made it into Milan’s team. Even carragher wouldn’t displace stam and nesta.

A game made for the Heavens. Surely God had His set on for this game and decided to dedicate the game to the 96 fans who died. A miracle from God that we won against a star-littered Ac Milan team. Every Liverpool player on that night is still feeling the cramps even today. They played their hearts out for the City of Liverpool. You are all Heros for the memories created at Instanbul. What a night. Retribution would then come of course in 2007 at Athens.
I'm from the USA, but I remember watching this epic final.
I was definitely pulling for Liverpool to win, but felt so bad for AC Milan, because they busted their butts all that night to win.
Unfortunately for them, so did Liverpool.
Even more unfortunately, someone had to lose that night.

It is striking to me how badly did Liverpool perform in the first half. First goal - tha should not have happened in UCL. Maldini’s strike was brilliant but he was given time and space and was not troubled at all by LFCs defence. Goal no. 2 and 3 the same story - no pressing no fighting. Wow. But then they simply rised and killed Milans hopes. And made not one mistake. These Traore’s, Carragher’s and several Dudek’s saves were epic

That stood our to me as well. He actually does this with every single penalty. The 'line rule' has been around since 1905. It has been amended in the sense that goalkeepers are allowed to move their feet, but should still stay on or behind the line. Other than that, Dudek is clearly in infringement here. All of Milan's missed penalty's should've been done over.

This is the biggest comeback in the history of football till date. The distance betwen milan and liverpool is like a guardiola barcelona playing against a Tottenham and lost the game haven lead 3goals. Its even funny that liverpool scored hee own 3goals in less than 5min of play. The first goal was 54` and the last was 60min and in between was about 30-45 secs of jubilation. So we can say 3goals in 5min of play. Its so incredible to happen on the biggest stage of club football. Such can nevr happen again and i dont think it has happened b4. Insane to think in today’s game Carra wouldn’t make the bench. Shocking how slow he is in this match, could’ve been 5-2 at halftime.
I know there are many moments that stand out from this incredible final but if I had to choose one I would pick Kaka´s pass that led to Milan´s 3rd goal. Absolutely insane pass, out of this world.

It is common for clubs to extend lifelong privileges to former players, including ticket preferences etc. Then they also have "legend of" teams where let's say the legendary former players of one club get invited to play a game against the legendary players of a good rival.
