I feel like this video would get 10x views if you applied this analysis to corporations that buy IP and then undermine the intent of the original creator. “The Acolyte and Cultural Appropriation” seems like something the algorithm would love.

This is a great idea. I know he would have plenty to say along these lines. If you follow him on Substack you can see him go to blows with Amazon re: Rings of Power for this very reason. I'll see if we can get an episode planned for this topic. -- JB, producer

Very well-argued, sir! I've always just thought imitation was the sincerest form of flattery, so I thought the whole question involved a fair bit of hooey. If asked by a socialist, it reveals a blistering level of self-contradiction which, to be fair, socialists appear to be quite comfortable with.
I, after all, didn't think it was "cultural appropriation" when non-English-speaking slaves from Africa started learning English; why should they object if we return the favor? I thought the bit at the end about recognizing the sacred was good to remember, even if not applicable in the AAVE case.

Connected with the idea of rights, how might a patent fit in? If I patent a certain way of making pottery, to use your metaphors, then it seems that I hold the right over the abstract idea of that particular type of pottery. Even if you buy the pottery and reverse engineer it, it would be a violation of my right. Perhaps patents are not actually rights to begin with. But if we allow that a patent enables one to “own” not merely a pot but the particular structure and manufacturing of all pots of that form, does that open the door to the designer having rights over the abstract rather than merely his own particular pottery?

i was thinking the same thing, also copyrights with stories and songs.
it's a pretty radical take. i reckon consistent and compelling, but radical in this time/broad culture.

I'll add this to the list of questions for his Q&A this month! I know he has plenty to say about this angle. -- JB, producer

Is it a performative contradiction for a government to have a natural view of rights to use fiat currency? Should a government with a view of natural rights also have a "natural" currency? IDK.

Interesting question! Dr. Jacobs is going to do a Q&A in a couple of weeks and I'll make sure to throw this into the mix for him! - JB, producer
