And it's footprint has only grown in the past 30 years. I hear someone say recently that every rapper opens up a restaurant in Atlanta but where are the rappers that open up grocery stores...? They not lying.
I'm 40 years old and went to highschool at Grady in Atlanta, the real ATL which is Fulton county and I just shed a tear listening to this. There was tons of rap music and hip-hop that was beautiful during that time but this album reasonates with me the most because it was all about our culture and lifestyle that we were living here in the city. This album guided me through my worst time as a teen and guided me through my better days. Soul Food by Goodie MOB, ATLiens by Outkast and Wu-Tang Forever were the quintessential hip hop albums for me as a child.
I'm from Oakland and we stayed playing this. we love the south cuz that's where all our family is from. southern rappers were huge in California before anywhere else.
I'm from Atlanta but now live in Cali. I love visiting Oakland it reminds me a lot of Atlanta every time I be hangin out there. Soon I actually plan on moving to the Bay Area either near a BART Station or a really good bus line that connects to SF whenever I don't feel like driving
Nigga you crazy. The Midwest was on a lot of the southern shit way before it started catching wind I the East or West. We was buying that southern shit when it was underground, they was doing shows up here first too
After graduating culinary school....I made it my business to volunteer and feed those a restaurant quality meal for those who can't afford a meal. Food for free to feed the soul; Inspiration cafe you rock!!!!
I love how hard the rap is, but with a sensitive message, talking of REAL shit, not bragging about shooting, killing, money.... they talk of strife - difficult times, monotony and indignity of a minimum wage job, AND the good times, family, friends, food, being thankful, knowing things SHOULD be better and we deserve better but at the moment we're stuck with some shit in our situation, but also some beautiful friends and family and food to break up the bad times, and making it all worth it, keeping oneself GRATEFUL FOR WHAT YOU GOT.
+tonadoff Aquemini, while a great album, was commercial. ATLiens and Soul food ARE two of the best Hip Hop albums period. This coming from a NY head. Goodie Mob were way ahead of their time back in '95.
No necessarily. Those first two albums had a more authentic SW Atlanta sound that nobody had introduced to the world yet. Plus the stuff they were talking about . Aquemini sounded more mainstream. They experimented with different sounds and styles. ATLiens and Soul Food still rank as my favorite from the south.
Yep I agree...this album was so enjoyable but also spoke of problems of the world. Even this song had two meanings...while it's about hitting all the great food joints in Atlanta, it's also speaking spiritually. Amazing album that I could play the entire album and not get bored...
Man listen! This was that shit back in the day!!! People don’t make music like this no more, they actually speaking some truth! Preach brothas!! This is what real woke people look like!
Back when Atlanta music made you feel good...The nostalgia being there is unreal and the friendships I create will forever have a special place in my heart...Thank you all for making me love it up there and I miss yall
I Love the video it's good to see Ce Lo and the the rest of the crew doing their thing. The video was well done I was cracking up when my man was pouring all the salt on the fries and threw the bags of food back in the driveway in the driver's side window. CLASSIC.
I use to work fast food....I broke out laughing when he threw the food back at him! The intro when Celo was sitting down singing was so real and soulful...then that slow beat kicked in I already knew this was going to be deep

Crazy thing is ppl will look at this and say how good southern rap use to be but back when it was out the same ppl were hating and criticize it then just like they do southern rap now
I see what you are talking about. I always liked the song Soul Food. Outkast and Goodie Mobb were real unique and new back then. Nobody sounded like them.
the fact is all the records that trace back to Organized Noize were on another level, both production and emcees. it was real hiphop. but southern fried dig?
I’m 42 years old and when this came out I was going to school in “DUVAL” and it’s all you heard walking down the hallways and on the bus. Simpler times….the good ole days. If you missed the 90’s, you missed the golden era

Soul Food Lyrics:
My old boy from the point
But I'm from Southwest and every
Now and then I get put to the test
But I can't be stopped
Cause I gotta come true ain't go no gun
But I got my crew
Didn't come for no beef cause I don't eat steak
I got a plate of soul food chicken, rice and gravy
Not covered in too much
Drinking a cup of punch, tropical
Every last Thursday of the month
Daddy put tha hot grits on my chest in tha morning
When I was sick Mary had tha hot soup boiling
Didn't know why but it felt so good
Like some waffles in that morning
Headed back to tha woods
Now I'm full as tick
Got some soul on blast in tha cassette
Food for my brain
I haven't stopped learning yet
Hot wings from Mo-Joes
Got my forehead sweating
Celery and blue cheese on my menu next
Southern Fry won't allow my body to lie still
Tied face goons surround me like cancer drill
Me with second-hand obstables
But, only to make matters worse
Plus I'm getting pimped by this temp lady Jackie
From Optima staffing figure laughing
Shut up clown don't talk to me
Like that looking stupid of course
Living day by day and you ain't hard
Trick hell you say?
It's such a blessing when my eyes
Get to see the sun rise
I'm ready to begin, another chance to get further away from where I've been
What I'll never forget everythang I went through
I appreciate the shit because
If I hada went and took the easy way
I wouldn't be the strong nigga that I am today
Everythang that I did
Different thangs I was told
Just ended up being food for my soul
Come and get yo' soul food, well well
Good old-fashioned soul food, all right
Everythang is for free
As good as it can be
Come and get some soul food
Sunday morning where you eating at?
I'm on 1365 Wichita Drive
Ole' burd working the stove ride
Churches dropping chicken in yesterday's grease
Didn't go together with this quart of Mickey's
Last night hanging over from a good time
Yeah beef is cheaper but
It's pumped with "red dye" between two pieces of bread
Shawty look good with dem hairy legs
Wish I could cut her up but, ma stomach come before sex
A house full of hoes now what's the ingredient
Spaghetty plus her monthly flow
They know they making it hard on the yard
Fuck Chris Darden, fuck Marcia Clark
Taking us when we're in the spotlight for a joke
Changing by the day I see it's getting bigga in my square
Looking at Lenox from the outside
With a stare no money to go inside
Tameka and Tiffany outside tripping
And skipping rope to the beats from my jeep
As I speak wuz up from the driver seat
A heaping helping of fried chicken
Macaroni and cheese and collard greens
Too big for my jeans
Smoke steams from under the lid that's on the pot
Ain't never had allot but thankful for
The little that I got why not be
Fast food got me feeling sick
Them crackers think they slick
By trying to make this bullshit affordable
I thank the Lord that my voice was recordable
Hold up C it's what I write
And Miss Lady acting like we in jail
Says she ain't got no extra hush puppis to sell
Bankhead seafood making me hit that door
With a mind full of attitude
It was a line at tha beautiful
Jj's Ribshack was packed too
Looking to be one of dem days
When Momma ain't cooking
Everybody's out hunting with tha family
Looking for a little soul food
Come and get yo' soul food, well well
Good old-fashioned soul food, all right
Everythang is for free
As good as it can be
Come and get some soul food
Come and get some soul food. I paid a pretty penny for Goodie Mob vinyl last year.
Real Southern Hip Hop!!!
This just gave me hope...I am going to get threw it day by day n just keep getting better and more positive that there's more than this to life than the bad I've been just excepting. But I know that it will be okay... music is soul food
Crazy thing is ppl will look at this and say how good southern rap use to be but back when it was out the same ppl were hating and criticize it then just like they do southern rap now
Faaacts, but the cream always rise to the top
I see what you are talking about. I always liked the song Soul Food. Outkast and Goodie Mobb were real unique and new back then. Nobody sounded like them.
the fact is all the records that trace back to Organized Noize were on another level, both production and emcees. it was real hiphop. but southern fried dig?
#facts

I’m 42 years old and when this came out I was going to school in “DUVAL” and it’s all you heard walking down the hallways and on the bus. Simpler times….the good ole days. If you missed the 90’s, you missed the golden era
ONE OF MY FAVORITE OLD SCHOOL TRACKS FROM BACK IN DAY AND STILL IS TODAY😎
Seeing so many happy black people is beautiful, something you don't see in music videos anymore.
Whats videos you watching? Stop watching Mumble rap and start watching some real rappers like Kendrick, Buddy, D Smoke, etc. WE LIVE! Like Hov said "I'm afraid the whole game will be Colonized". 🤌🏽🖤❤️💚🧡💛
Brothas and sistas need to remember this. Not a naked chic, blunt, strippers, glock or nigga lying dead in the street. Just real, good intelligent, conscious rap. What happened?
ViVi Penny they was waking up the masses, so they found a way to put people back to sleep
Money Penny PREACH. What happened...?? Greed... loss of what's important.... not following truth... with all due respect.... this generation here from this time..in the vid... this era of black men and women were true people of character. These are what true kings are. Handling the business of loving people....
when I heard C-Lo's lyrics....I knew I was not alone. I felt I was NOT alone. it helped me.- thank u!!!
