    I love night cafe. I don't think it's ugly the way we're taught in school, I think it's ugly in the way it feels. It's an ugly atmosphere, but a beautiful painting of that ugliness. If that makes sense.

    • @tuanjim799
      @tuanjim799 4 ปีที่แล้ว +166

      Yeah, it's not at all ugly in a "eeew, that's a shitty painting" way. It's just depicting something dark. it's beautiful in the same way that a Dostoevsky novel is beautiful, even when it's depicting some of the harshest, ugliest aspects of human experience.

      It's kind of like how music can be "ugly". It's not that it sounds bad, but it sounds so hurt and suffered that it's beautiful.

      i was just noticing this on this rewatch too! i think we're kind of drawn to the lamps, with the steady line of them, their emitting light, maybe there's something about perspective and lines here too. whatever it is, the three lights are giving off that skeezy yellow, and all three are looking right at you, the viewer, almost highlighting the gaze we feel but cannot see from the bartender. even as all the other patrons look away, absorbed in their drink, the bartender and the eye's of his bar stare right at us. let's just say i can feel my social anxiety just looking at this one.

Van Gogh gave this painting to the man in the white jacket, he owned the bar and the apartment above it which Van Gogh lived in.

      However, the combo is usually mellowed out with a lot of white, invariably if you live somewhere it snows, plus stories about Santa Claus and Jesus both typically bring in white. There's often many other colors in adition when it comes to decorations, gold in particular is a common Xmas colour, and brings some class even if it's no less loud.

    This is a realistic example of what a social bustling setting looks like when you look at it from sober eyes (even tho VG was probably not sober) looking at something from the distance of loneliness and mental illness. He may have been depicting the setting itself objectively, but it feels more like he is depicting through his on eyes which are tinged with this deep separation from the people around him even though he was right next to them. Maybe that’s why it feels and looks ugly. He felt connected in nature, so there is a love attached to it, there is a sense of oneness. When he is inside, it’s almost like it was synthetic to him, like walking into the matrix. It’s sad but honestly weirdly relatable. One of my favorite songs is the Nirvana song “Dumb” - when you’re mentally ill you can either pretend to fit in in settings like this, or you can see the truth of the experience which is lonely and sad.

    I kind of like it. The colors are nice and the large shadow is intriguing big and silent. The focus, the man is off centered and facelessly staring at you, like he’s greeting/acknowledging you. And there’s pink flowers in the back. A very calm and quiet painting.

    This is my favourite Van Gogh. I’ve been fortunate enough to see it “in the flesh” twice. It stopped me in my track, I felt I could hear him urging me “look, look! “. I read that he once wrote that if he painted a tree, he didn’t want people to see a tree, he wanted them to feel it. I certainly feel him in this painting. I could write a page about what I get out of it.

    Has anyone compared this painting to the "Liminal Spaces" effect. Cus this painting feels a bit liminal. "The Cafe Terrace at night" and "Night Cafe" are honestly my two favorite paintings from Van Gogh, I know everyone is always talking about "Starry Night" or his "Sunflowers" painting but these two are my favorite and I'm really not sure why too. Night Cafe for me is like in the same vain of why I like Hopper's Nighthawks. There's just something about those paintings that I can't explain the feeling but they make me feel in the moment if that makes sense.

  • @annabethdiana5857
    @annabethdiana5857 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Night cafe is a painting that has you continually glancing at the doorway, unable to move towards it because of the hypnotic claustrophobic feel of the rest of the scene. The awareness that something is wrong, and you need to leave.
    The walls are closing in, the drugs are taking hold, the depression has mutilated you. There is no escape from our own fears and anxieties.

    I grew up with this painting at my local museum (Yale Art Gallery) and it has always been my favorite in their collection. Whether it was ugly or not never occurred to me. Today I see the dichotomy of beauty vs ugly to be a trick being played on us to keep us in line. Great video, but there are some common mistakes when it comes to the color wheel and secondary colors.
    The three primary colors are those that can't be made mixing by any other colors, they are cyan, yellow and magenta (not red). Secondary colors are the combinations of two primary colors: purple, green and red. Complementary colors are pairs of colors that are opposite on the color wheel, the complementary of a primary color is always a secondary color formed by the two other primary colors, they are: magenta-green, yellow-purple and cyan-red. Different tones of reds are complementary to different tones of blue, the more a red leans towards magenta (such as a raspberry color), the more its complementary blue will lean towards green (like a turquoise), but it won't be actual green. Hope this helps someone, there's a lot of misinformation when it comes to basic color theory

    Van Gogh was a childhood idol of mine. I loved his work from the first time I saw it, and reproduced a select number of works in aquarel when I was 11. It was only when I reached adult phase though that then significance and uniqueness of his works really dawned on me, especially the contrasting colors and the oftentimes strange perspectives. The story of the man was a sad one however, and I wish he would have got the recognition he deserves, which unfotunarely only was reached post mortem.
    There are few artist who compare to his unique style, but I for one loved his breakaway from traditional art contemporaries and the way he, stubbornly believed in his own work. He was determined, devoted, and had a very peculiar relationship with nature, space and shapes. His work keeps on inspiring me.
    Great video!
