The Dawn Redwood was actually growing during the time that dinosaurs walked the Earth. Scientists thought that they had been extinct for over 10,000 years. Explorers found a grove of living Dawn Redwood in Vietnam. Unfortunately, the war broke out at that time and they had to leave quickly. After the war they went back and fortunately found the grove of Dawn Redwood still standing. They collected seeds from the Dawn Redwood and planted them around the world in various places. Some were planted at the Los Angeles Zoo. They are growing near the Avian cages.
I love seeing how you are developing the pollinator bed next to your new raised bed garden! So many beautiful specimens! And how fun to start to plant some things into your new Vego beds! Happy planting!
Hi Steph! Next time you are at Briggs nursery if you stand with your back to the building looking in the left-hand corner there is a very large Dawn Redwood. You can walk under the canopy. It is pretty magical!
Good morning! I also planted the Heirloom variety sweet peas. I’m in zone 8b (now) and planted the seeds straight in the garden. They were doing beautifully until the worst case of aphids I’ve ever seen on any plant occurred. Be on the look out. They were planted in my dahlia raised bed and I took them out as I was afraid the aphids might attack my dahlias as well. Come to find out, there are many different types of aphids and my dahlias may have been safe anyway. I didn’t realize. I’m going to try again in the winter. 🤞
Thank you for telling me I need to fertilize my garlic. This is the first year growing garlic. I really have no idea what to do as far as fertilizer goes. I’ll put some blood meal on today. Gomphrena, mine look about like yours. This is also the first year I have planted it by seed. I so enjoy your videos. You have inspired me with different varieties of plants, container planting and I so enjoy seeing your woodland plants-so pretty. Keep up the good work.
Hi Stef 🌺.These plants are going to be amazing in your garden and I cant wait to see the cobaea scandes full of flowers . The azalia looks amazing so pretty and this basket from your mother looks so beautiful . Stef plant camellia in your garden in protected area if it grow well in your zone . Happy Mother's day💐 and have a wonderful day .🌻🌺🌻
We have three Ogon Golden Dawn Redwoods. They are beautiful and no problem at all. The golden leaves stay that way until they turn a burnt red in the fall. Everybody that comes to our garden, loves these trees. A very neat tree and growing in a perfect slim pyramid. I think, the only thing to be aware of is that the tree could get to be 100 feet tall and 15-25 feet wide. This will take time, of course. The lifespan of these trees is 100 years.
Wonderful video as always! I picked up a Kent beauty oregano as well this year! I was excited to find it and can’t wait to watch it grow. I’ll be growing mine in a pot as well on my deck😊
Thanks for the info about the sea holly. I’m trying them for the first time and didn’t know that I should stake them now before they are too big. Love your yard.
About 5 years ago I moved my variegated solomon's seal from a semi shaded area out into the full sun on the west side of the house in 7B Maryland and thought it would scorch and die, but instead it's thriving and has formed a dense area that keeps out all the weeds (except the occasional chinese wisteria that a neighbor planted). It's such a valuable ground cover to me.
@@HookedandRooted I got the variegated Solomon's seal 3 years back from a plant sale organized by our local library. I planted it on the west side of the house and it receives full Sun. It does so well in that area that I divide it every year and move it to other areas of my garden. I garden in MA.
HAHA, just like me. I planted the bulbs last year; they look nice. But when the Garden centers start selling plants and you see the ones you want and know where they will be good, you need to move the bulbs. Living in Upstate, it's like there is no spring. Spring seems more like winter than spring, and then summer hits. I want to get those new plants in the ground so they can work on roots.
I've been really enjoying your channel ever since I came across it, but this video just seems even more fun & informative than usual. Maybe it was your sharing the history of the azalea that your dad gave to your grandma, & her to you, or maybe it was the little earthworm that photo bombed your nasturtium transplanting when you sped up the footage LOL
You sound like me, getting impatient and moving things, I've done that a few times this year but in today's case I have a pop star hydrangeas that just wasn't performing like it's twin so I dug into the ground to find it in standing water because we have had so much rain recently. I raised her up and backfilled with a bit of potting soil and compost. Hopefully that helps for now.
Happy belated mothers day Maria!! Hope you had a wonderful weekend, and that your kids brought you some beautiful plants for your garden. How fun that you also picked some plants up. My guys brought me to Briggs to choose a couple of plants, and I got to have a lobster roll for lunch. I got spoiled 💚Hope you did too!
That’s wonderful. You should be spoiled! My day was also wonderful. My children got together and gave me the Birdfy for hummingbirds and my grandchildren gave me a beautiful hummingbird spiral wind chime. My husband’s the one that took me to this nursery in Attleboro and I ended up getting my Korean Spice Vibernium and a couple of beautiful Irises. Now I just have to find the right spot. ❤
@@mariacosta6086 oh that's great!! was it Briggs? Its a great nursery. I hope you love your Korean Spice Viburnum. I absolutely loved mine this year, it was the first year it was officially planted and bloomed (bought it last season). Its so pretty, and fragrant 🌱🌱
OMG Steph. I had the same issue with my gomphrena. Have now started three different sets of needs. I'm really hoping this set will get going?!? I also had a Vovo! She grew a bunch of stuff and my memories of her are not of plants, but crochet. You reminded me of her. Thank you.

Did you add soil around your trees so you wouldn't run into so many roots? I just picked up a Jacob's Ladder plant today. My Solomon's Seal plants are planted closer to our house in the shade where the soil is moist. So far they are all doing well and the deer haven't found them. Have a great week!!

Hi Steph, I, too, love cup and saucer vines. Just bought 2 last week. I have a question: Are the posts securing your cattle panel arbors in your raised beds black. And if so, where did you purchase them? Or did your wonderful husband paint them? 😊
My Gomphrena germination was terrific I started them 6 weeks ago and every cell took. How warm does it have to be before I can plant out? . I’m in coastal Mass and the long range forecast is all nights above 50 but not super warm during day ?

Perhaps it was just something off this year. I have had great luck with it the last couple of years. I shoud still have enough seedlings if they continue to grow 🤞
Hi Kathy! That's great to know. The deer definitely sample them in my garden. I'll try a new spot closer to the house. Fingers crossed. Thank you for watching 🌱
Hi there! I wish it would be a little more aggressive for me. I have had a small clump for at least 6 years, and its never amounted to much. But yes, how fast and how much a plant spreads certainly can be dependent on the growing area and conditions. Thank you 🌱
How do you find out about these sales? I'm in MA and would have loved to go to this. Tower Hill Botanic Garden had one about 6 years ago but haven't had one since.
Hi Marty! I found out about this one through my garden club. They have a facebook page if your on FB and you can like and follow to get updates on the sale. This particular one happens to fall on the first Saturday of May each year.
That ginger takes years and years of time to look like anything. One plant would do almost nothing for a ground cover effect, even after years. My sister had it in NY, bought about five to begin with. I have to say beautiful effect, glossy leaves, but after five years it was finally looking like something, but not far and wide, just in the area where they had been planted. They were finally connecting.
Yes, I have heard people in our area talk about it. The plants I purchased were from nurseries, so I feel fairy confident that the soil is sterilized/clean. However its definitely wise to take precautions with plant sharing/plant sales. Cleaning off all the soil from the roots, and planting in clean soil in your garden is probably a good step to take.
I feel so relaxed listening to you talk. You have a really nice voice. You and your husband make a great team.

Do you need to worry about Jumping Worms in your area?
Yes, I have heard people in our area talk about it. The plants I purchased were from nurseries, so I feel fairy confident that the soil is sterilized/clean. However its definitely wise to take precautions with plant sharing/plant sales. Cleaning off all the soil from the roots, and planting in clean soil in your garden is probably a good step to take.
maybe you need newer gomphrena seeds or a different brand
