How wonderful it must have been to be under your tutelage. Your channel is one of the best and most informative on youtube. Your ability, knowledge, and concise, understandable conveyance of this knowledge are easily understood by all. Your videos cover a vast arena on many subjects, making them all worthwhile to watch, never dull, never a waste of time, and always something to learn. THANK YOU. I must add one thing - There was a point in time when our older generation was looked upon as a resource of knowledge and it saddens me greatly that today's generation, for the most part, has little respect for their elders and looks at them as being ignorant, know-nothings. (including many of their parents) When I was a young man of 17/18 I was fortunate enough to be friends with two gentlemen one 92 and the other 96, I saw them weekly and never I tired of the stories and knowledge, I was always inquisitive.

I recently decided to reload 12 ga. I am comfortable reloading 38, 357, 223, 30-06, 270, 45 acp and so on. Shotgun, while seeming simple, is far more complex than I imagined. I will not give up on this endeavor, so I seek out knowledge such as you offer here. Thank you.

I love the fact that GunBlues give consideration to cost. You can't spend the same dollar twice. My wife totally supports my desire to hunt deer and to equip myself and do practice shooting appropriately. But it would be a different matter if I spent foolishly and and neglected my other financial obligations. That does not help me or my family (my wife and children are a blessing from God, and I am so grateful). So it is very important to stay practical and I wanted to thank GunBlue for all the good advice and saving some money along the way.
I would just Like to say Thank You Sir, You have re-ignited My interest to not only dust off My loading Bench, but to extend it's perimeter, add shelves which I built with re-purposed wood ! Now I've added a Shotshell Press and will learn to Use it Safely of coarse. Not only has this been a lot of fun(maybe the most in nearly 3 years) it's been Very rewarding. I have been recovering from a work related injury and it has stifled my normal behavior, along with a more recent diagnosis which I am currently seeking treatment, I will have something to look forward to ! I subscribed to your channel for rifle and pistol reloading education and just recently got into shotgun shooting and reloading. After a couple of runs at reloading about ten shells I realized that I need more of an education on shotgun shells. You’re site is where I knew I could get the best info. I am passing it along to my friends that are thinking of getting into reloading.
Once again you blew me away with your vast knowledge. I love shooting sporting clays, which I’ve only started doing these last seven years. Now at 63yo I’ve bought my first 12 gauge reloading system, and came to you for info! Thank you So much Sir, for sharing your knowledge and experiences. God Bless! 👍

I started getting serious about reloading when we started having Ammo shortages year after year. And I've found that shotgun reloading is as technical and critical as riffle reloading or more so. The pressers involved can get out of control fast because of the weight you're putting down range.

I got near the 18 minute mark of this video where you comment on someone's gun getting ruined by a reload. Reminded me of a time a gentleman gave me some reloads from a friend of his 10 or more years previous had given to him. I shot a few and all was well, until I found the ONE. That ONE put my 870 barrel into my face and it was a 2 3/4. I still have about 6-8 of those. I am reluctant, to say the least, to shoot any of them.
It is extremely helpful having a softcopy book to thumb through at home. You just do not get that capability with viewing things online. I only go to online information for comparative perhaps most update information.

I've seen a destroyed barrel by a novice reloader. He was experimenting with "wax slugs".
I, personally, don't have anything against wax slugs. When assembled correctly, they actually work pretty well. In this particular case, however, the novice had loaded a wax slug, and then walked to his target area with the barrel pointed down. Good technique on the surface. However, it was not only a warm day, but the trip to the range was in a warm car.
Probably won't ever have a concrete answer, but I'm quite satisfied that the wax slug migrated into the barrel during the walk, and the first shot fired amounted to a bore obstruction.
I'm sure that could have occurred.

Great video, I load my own shotgun shells as well. I load slugs the most because of the cost factor, from molding l.e.e. key drives to buying slugs from BPI. I load the LCB slug from BPI with longshot powder the most, what a great combination they are. I appreciate and respect what you were speaking about when it comes to load pressures and possible dangers of wildcatting rounds. Thank you for another excellent video with great learning content.

I have decided to purchase the smaller MEC bushing and take it to a machine shop and have it bored out. According to my calculations they will need to increase the diameter by a factor of 1.02 and that should put the volume where it needs to be.

My old 1992 reloaders guide from Hercules says the same thing as the modern stuff on the internet now. Nothing has changed.
Quick question: is it possible to purchase field target loads, cut the crimp head off, fill it with the same weight of buckshot and roll crimp it back with an overshot card?

I wish you would have mentioned the pros and cons of the use (or mis-use) of magnum primers. I ended up with 1000 pack of them a while back because the standard 209's were not available. I've heard to reduce powder charge by 10% when using the magnum primers? I've test fired a few rounds in which I didn't reduce the powder charge in a Remington 870, they seem ok.
Federal, Herter, Fiocchi, Nobel and cheddite are straight-walled cases. Therefore only federal wads will work best. Winchester AA and remington have tapered cases, only tapered case wads can be used. (fig 8 and AA wads.). you can switch remington and AA wads between those cases. Consult the Lyman manual the manual explains case type and wad selection.

I'd LOVE to find some hulls that used an all Brass head. The steel ones are way too susceptible to rusting.

Gauge is only a bore size and quantity. Everything I spoke of regarding loads and components applies to any gauge.
I am trying to load a 1 oz 20 ga was easy with
Sp20 rem wads but no more.
Pressures get high with different powder and wads. What is a relatively safe pressure?

Only a laboratory can measure pressures. All shotgun wads and components can be loaded to safe pressures by following published loading data for those components. Always follow published data. Lyman has the most extensive publication on shotgun loads with every component made.
Wads and hulls is what I'm. Worried about to start reloading shotshells I reload centerfire pistol and rifle but shotshells I'm not comfortable with just yet gonna research it alot more but I try
Shotshell reloading is the simplest and safest form of cartridge reloading, because every combination of exact hulls, primers, wads, shot charge, powders, and velocities are comprehensively detailed, and there's no guesswork, and no working up test loads involved. Each recipe is detailed. If you want to investigate shotshell reloading, I recommend getting Lyman's Shotshell Reloading Handbook.

Hey there: I am VERY experienced at reloading Rifle/pistol cartages, I am getting into shot gun reloading. I have 12 gauge 16 gauge and 10 gauge to date (no 410 yet). I am Thinking about buying a LEE 'load all', Worth buying, or save the $80.00 and buy a ???????? Station instead?????
I can afford a decent press, I see a 'progressive' 12 gauge press for $600.00 at the pawn shop, -- nice machine, but is it worth investing 600 on a press? (I have a progressive press for pistol/rifle but, I dont use it, I like my single stage or turret press with my charge master dispenser (less chance to make a mistake).
150 fps faster means that in one second your shot will have traveled 150 ft further than the slower shot.
Swapping one component for another is not as big a deal as he makes it out to be. Compare load data in the load manuals and you will see different wads, or different hulls can use similar powder charges so there is a lot of similarities.
Certain hulls can't use some wads because some hull taper at the bottom and some are straight, and the wads compensate for that.
Keep the pressures low enough and you can substitute hulls, wads and primers. Just be safe about it.
What does this mean? Winchester AA 1-1 5/8 optimum 1 1/8 on the bag

If cut open the factory load 12 gauge 00 buckshot and simply replace the lead pellets with steel.., would that round perform well and safe?? Or should I also replace the powder??

Steel shot weighs less than lead shot…so yes your recipe will change.

Ahh, ok. Didn't know they had a cookbook. Alcoholic beverages are one of the main food groups in south Louisiana.
I want to reload with green dot and the recipe from Lyman Reloading Handbook calls for a charge of 19.5 grs. MEC powder bushings throw 19grs. and 19..7 grs. for Green Dot powder. If I choose the closest it would be the 19.7 gr. bushing. Is this the correct choice or should I use the lower of the two. I recall reading that one shouldn't overcharge for obvious reason and also not undercharge for not so obvious reasons. What to do?
Obtain the next smaller bushing. No harm is done if you're several tenths under, but over is never the safe thing. You'll simply have a very slightly milder load that will affect nothing whatsoever. Lyman develops those loads to achieve the exact velocities stated, so while you might not hit that velocity on the dime, being close is close enough for your requirements. You'd have to grossly undercharge to create a squib with such a fast burning powder.

I would also use the smaller charge then measure what it throws out. You might be surprised that depending on what powder it may actually throw out 19.3 gr instead of 19. Always use a powder measure to see what the bushing is actually dropping.

It's the position of the relative burning rate on the comprehensive Lee burning rate chart. I organize my powder storage cabinet in order of burning rate for easy reference.

I'm pretty good with a pistol or a rifle, but I've never mastered a shotgun. It takes me two boxes of shells to hit one dove. That's 20 bucks. With it I can buy four chickens they are already packaged and skinned..🤣💦💦💦.
