      Thank you! :). It's not much of a set up now. I really need to organize things much better. But for what it is, the plants seem to thrive under there (except for my Phal lobbii). Hopefully I can find some time in the near future and do a video. Thanks for watching and commenting. Happy growing.

    Happy New Year Trac and many thanks for your wonderful high quality update. In your beautiful grow space I would bloom all year long. I''m surprised that unfortunately some of your orchids didn't make it and I'm sorry that you couldn't save them. Your home looks to me like paradise for orchids and succulents. Can't wait to see your Neofinetias.
    Have a wonderful day !

      Hi Bettina! Thank you for your kind comments. It is unfortunately that I've lost some through the course of this year. But it was to be expected since many of them were acquired not in the best of health (and some just unexpectedly die). But it's OK. They're just minor set backs. Thanks for watching and I hope you have a wonderful new year. Happy growing!

    Beautiful house! :) By looking at how big your collection is, you live in a house, not apartment?
    You are so kind to remember those whom you had lost, eventhough they were plants. You definitely are a very thoughtful person. As others, I am impressed with your LC Sheila Lauterbach. I am a cattleyas fan myself.

      Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. I'm not sure if I've answer your question a while ago if I used filters or not for my videos. My response at that time probably didn't make any sense since I thought you were asking about water filters (lol). Anyways, I wanted to formally give a more coherent response - I don't use any present filters, but I do alter my clips. I adjust exposures a lot to give it a "film" like look along with rendering in 24 fps. Happy growing!

    • @orchidbaba3053
      @orchidbaba3053 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trac, just remembered, how's it going with the Kool-Logs? I think all the mounts in this update video were wood.

    • @orchidbaba3053
      @orchidbaba3053 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I made another comment, but I guess the commenting system is sometimes screwy because it didn't post. I was wondering how you're feeling about Kool-Logs? Was your last video that included them the summer update? Also, thank you for explaining to me about the filters. I thought you were using a clever idiom: out of the faucet (like the footage is straight from the camera, unadulterated). But, thanks for explaining about the exposure. And a bigger thanks for remembering my question from before! That's really nice of you!

    • @TracMcNguyen
      @TracMcNguyen  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. No clever idioms here, lol. Just being half asleep when I responded, I suppose. I occasionally go back and watch old videos for referencing and noticed your comment and my response. I had a little chuckle. I should have corrected my response right away, but I procrastinated (like a pro). So the Kool-Logs are working well, which is really strange since the last time I had them indoors, mold started to take over like crazy. This time it's quite clean. I have them under the LED panels and I suspect that it might have something to do with UV LEDs keeping the mold at bay, but I really don't know. My Den lindleyi that you saw during a summer update is taking hold and producing lots of new growths.

    • @orchidbaba3053
      @orchidbaba3053 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to keep bothering, but who manufactures your panels? I started using a 300w MarsHydro, but the light output was SO intense close to the unit. It burned a leaf of my D. lindleyi. Also, I've read on some cannabis forums that UV leds hurt the eyes, so perhaps be careful not to look at them for too long--not that you would since you have your panels pointed downwards.

    Very impressive Phals. The scent of P. Purple Martin and schilleriana are my favorite things ever. The form of your P. Sogo vivien is gorgeous!
    Also, I think Danny tried alcohol to treat spider mites, but was not successful. With such a pest, I take no chances and take the nuclear option as soon as I notice it.

    • @TracMcNguyen
      @TracMcNguyen  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree with the Purple Martin and schilleriana's scent. They smell so good! I'm trying to keep a close eye on the spider mites and giving my tetraspis C1 slightly cooler conditions to slow down the reproduction cycle. It seems like I might need to keep on dealing with it until the last set of eggs hatch. So far so good. Crossing fingers that they don't spread to others. Thanks for taking the time to watching and comment. I hope you have fantastic growing year ahead!

    I did not have good results with phalaenopsis in growstones. I'm surprised because I expected it to be a nice, oxygen-rich, coarse media. I put 11 phals into the growstones but they all lost almost all of their roots within a very short time. Try it on one at a time! Some were 7 year-old phals with quite large root systems but now I have to baby them by spritzing the aerial roots. I much prefer hydroton and will just use the growstones for landscaping in the garden. I only used growstones on phalaenopsis so I'm not sure how other orchids do in it.

    • @TracMcNguyen
      @TracMcNguyen  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      So sorry to hear that your phals didn't take the growstones well. I'm not planning to switch my phals to growstones at this point. I think they're happy with traditional media so I'll let them be. I'm planning to use it for my oncidiums as they are having a hard time in my environment. I suspect that once I've switch, my watering schedule for them might have to change (maybe more frequently). Thanks for let me know about your experience with growstones. And thanks for watching! Happy growing!

    Quite an impressive setup for your mounted orchids, like it. Perfect for indoor growing! Love your Phal Schlerians and the way you showed orchids you lost, was interesting (I try to forget the ones I loose otherwise I blame myself for not being able to keep them alive, although I keep the tags, like Anna showed once, so I have a bunch of tags). As for your Phal.amboinensis, you'll have to wait a bit more to get the nice fragrance, and they improve as they mature. I enjoyed your video as usual and thanks very much for sharing(enjoyed your intro).

    • @TracMcNguyen
      @TracMcNguyen  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Mary! I had fun making this video so I'm glad you enjoyed it. It does make me feel bad to sharing the orchids that were lost, but I just have to be honest. I'm not the best orchid grower here, but the important thing is to learn from it. I think it's a good idea to hold on to tags of plants that we've lost. I think that's what I'll do in the future. I'm glad to hear that the amboinensis scent will improve over time. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Happy new year and happy growing!

    Hi Trac! Happy New Year and thanks for the update! You videos are always well-structured and superbly-edited. As much as I want to watch more of your videos, I think it is worth the wait. :) Your phals are doing awesome! So many spikes and blooms! It is shocking to know amboinensis has such a repulsive odor. I bought my Phal. Amboinensis AM/AOS thinking it has a nice fragrance. It has not bloomed for me yet, so I don't know yet. By the way, every time I see your big bay window, I am jealous to death! :)

    • @TracMcNguyen
      @TracMcNguyen  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Sherry. I'm in GA. It's hard to tally up the total cost of everything since I've reused a lot of stuff from last year. But for the LED panels which the main component of this setup, they run about $30 each on Amazon.com.

  • @AshaAsha-ou1ih
    @AshaAsha-ou1ih 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Trac the way you have your orchids displayed is beautiful!!! I was wondering were you able to custom order your led panels online or did you find someone locally to make them for you. I've been looking for a few panels for my "plant stand" which is more of a glass display so a custom design would be really helpful. I'm glad your videos are longer it's nice that you go into such detail. It really helps and I have definitely learned some new helpful tricks from your channel. Happy Growing!!!

    • @TracMcNguyen
      @TracMcNguyen  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! The LED panels are premade to be hung. I got them off of Amazon. I just screwed them in to the underside of my shelves. It's a bit of DIY but very doable. I'm not sure how glass would work but they have the rings for hooks on each side so can get a little creative to make it work. I hope that helps. Thanks for tuning and happy growing!

    As a relatively new "student" in orchid care, I would like to know what type of water do you believe is best to use? Should I purchase tonic, spring, or distilled water for water culture? I'm very interested in using water culture and wish to hear from you on this. I look forward to hearing from you, please. Thank you immensely for responding so kindly.

    • @TracMcNguyen
      @TracMcNguyen  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think if you were to purchase water for water culture, I would recommend distilled. I think the key is to get one that's low in mineral or soft water. Since the water from my tap is pretty soft I just use that. Mine doesn't seem to mind. I used a TDS meter and the reading is about 70 ppm for my tap water. I think any readings below that would be good. If I were careful, I would leave a bucket of my tap water out over night before using it (to dissipate all the chlorine in it) but I'm not that careful. :) I hope that helps.

    Happy New Year Trac! Wow your orchids are doing great! I see you got the Phal Trinity something... orchid from Peter Lin? I was eyeing that one too, it's going to be gorgeous. I am scared to order during the winter, recently I bought a yellow stuartiana and it came to be completely frozen and dead 😭 I got a refund ( the seller never sent notification of having it shipped ) he is a great eBay seller though. As always, a great video 😀👌

      @TracMcNguyen  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Arlene! Yep, go the Phal Hsinying Little Knight 'Trinity' from Peter Lin on eBay. It's just different than any complex hybrid phals that I had to have it :). I'm so sorry to hear that your stuartiana didn't make it in transport (but glad to hear that you got a refund). Yeah, orchid hauling in winter is a dicey business, unless you go get it yourself. I'm not sure what David Kessler's plan is, but given that he's a huge orchid enthusiast, I'm sure he'll set up a greenhouse there too. Not sure if he will sell to the public, though.

    Your cattleya is gorgeous - lovely clean clear colours and the white frill at the edge of the deep purple is very striking. Sorry to hear about your tetraspis and I loved the presentation of the honour roll for the dead orchids (not that I liked the idea of them dying).

    I have this awful oncidium I just need to get rid of. I hate them. Good luck with the growstones!
    Also, have you seen those awesome Neo holders that are kind of a circular hanger with multiple spots for small Neo plants? Here is an example of one, but there's lots of different kinds : s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/18/4c/e1/184ce15a2dd81ce9503995c59abf6d4d.jpg

      Yea, that fragrance is just repulsive.
      At one point was considering giving away some of mine too. I have a few that were just rescues so I'm not really keen on them. I just have two that I'm hoping they will thrive in the new media.
      That's a really neat neo holder. I think I might have to get something like that. Thanks for sharing!
