This is not a meme song. It's dedicated to his parents whom he lost when he was a child. It's about his depression and putting up a happy face. Read the lyrics without the music and it will hit you like a truck. This song is pure genius. In the end he accepts that he is an orphan, who travels europe without borders. Something his dad told him when he was still alive. "See dad? I listened to you."

hahaha and after that is got disqualified because a cameralady filmed him against the rules, Joost got fustrated to her and made a threatend reaction to her. She noted that to the organisation and police. And the dutch broadcast found the disqualication out off proportions. Netherlands next year no Eurovision. Some are really pissed off and 50% of the dutch eurovision lovers now hate the organisation and won't watch it this evening.
Not to be conspiratory but i think the eurovision management literally messed with him to have a reason to disqualify him. Like they follow crowd favorites to a certain extent but they decide in private who wins. Just my intuition about the whole thing.
@@InvixYT He was literally reacting live for the first time, obviously he didn't look it up. But as you can tell from the ending, he understood the gist of what it was about. Of course not all the nuances and little details, but the most important message, yes.
So the song is dedicated to his parents who died when he was 12/13 years old, he singing about how even though he could travel to so many countries the pain of loosing his parents always travels with him. "Ik geef zelfs mensen geld maar er is niemand die me helpt" means he paid a lot of money for therapy but that also didn't work. The end of the song is basically the end of an chapter for him, even though the loss of his parents is something he will carry forever, he can't always carry the pain and has to continue living. There is an extended version of the ending (Eurovision songs can only be 3 minutes long) where he sings a little more about how his parents will always be his heroes. Joost would always watch the Eurovisions with his parents and told them he would be performing someday. So for the first time listening to this song it might sound like just a funny song, but listening to it again/research, you'll find out it's a really happy melody, but with an emotional meaning. (also, Eurovision didn't place him as last because its an good ending song, there is a raffle on who performs when, that to make it "fair" to not place great ending songs at the end for even an better boost in televoting. )
Honestly I don't see the connection of what you are saying except the ending part of the song. When I heard it, he basically says he wants to visit his friends around Europe. Which suits the song 'welcome to Europe'. Then he says he runs out of money because of his travels, still matches with the song. Then he says he feels alone traveling by himself. I mean, he is traveling to visit his friends in Europe as he said before. By traveling alone, people would ask for help like him. He helps others but non helps him in return. Then talks about the cuisines that doesn't interest him and plays a song until they say 'Yes, that's very good, eh?'. In short, he wants to visit his friends by traveling alone, he's running out of money, he asks for help and has seen famous cuisines and heard a song. Anyone traveling alone would experience the same by feeling lonely, visiting old friends, running out of money at some point by traveling and seeing different cuisines.

Does anybody know if he is the one actually singing the rap part? Cause it sounds too perfect and different form the parts where he is obviously singing
@toledolights9 The rap part is live, yes. Many people only judge his vocals in the parts where he sings. He is a rapper, not a singer, but somehow nobody seems to pay attention to his vocals in the verses. The fact that you need to ask if it’s live, shows how good his vocals really are 🙂
Meme song? The people who call it a meme song are the people that doesn't do any effort to understand the song/artist. But just a blant reaction. Without knowing his history. All fun that you want to catch views. Atleast put some effort in the artists. + you're a sing and songwriter? Shame, shame on you.
He called it a meme song because that's what it is. Now, the lyrics might have the meaning you want, but it's not like people will understand them either because most people in Europe don't speak Dutch. If you wanted to send a deep meaningfull message then you should've either made it in English or set a certain atmosphere (like Salvador Sobral for example; not many people in Europe speak Portuguese yet his message was more than delivered). I'm sorry if this disappoints you but no one but ESC fans and Dutch people will care about the message of the song, people will just vote for its sillyness because that's the first thing you notice about it. Absolutely nothing of Joost's performance shows the meaning of the song, except for the outro where he straight up says it, which won't make any sense for (most) people who don't know the context of it. Y'all need to get out of that bubble.

A meme song. Please. This is our culture. This is who we are. And we damn well keep our shit to ourselves and don't "let the dirty laundry out to dry". Until we explode and it all pours out in a short moment. This is especially true for the Dutch in the north and northwest. We keep things in, then it explodes and then we cry and move on. This is what Joost did, with Eurodance, gabber and then the ending. It is not a meme song, this is who we are.
